Does anyone else live with Makka Pakka?

Just stones. Everywhere bloody stones. We've got beach stones, playground stones, random stones, painted stones, carved stones, stones shaped like food, heart stones, and stones that are actually bits of grit, brick, pottery or god knows what. They're in the washing machine, on the floor, in every pocket of every garment worn by the dc. Occasionally they have company in the form of sticks, plastic, random metal shapes, and bloody Tesco tokens. Why are children such Magpies?

Yea, my house is full of bloody stones!

FussyPud · 24/07/2023 19:57

I have banned sodding stones.

I still find a minimum of two per week in my washing machine. We also argue about classification, as apparently I can’t just ban stones and expect him to not assume flint and so on are ok. Twatty little bugger!

Mercibuckets · 24/07/2023 19:58

We had sticks for several years!

frootito · 24/07/2023 20:00

Stones yes. But also shells and sticks! I repatriate them to the woods every so often.

Saisong · 24/07/2023 20:01

Yes, I do, 2 of them, and they are not toddlers either. The eldest is 16 and comes back with pocket loads of pebbles and glass - we have an entire archive box full. The younger teen is a magpie for anything tat interesting - paper clips, pen lids, rubber bands (oh god the rubber bands), broken toys etc. I have to frisk all pockets before anything goes near the washing machine (recalls a very expensive incident with a carabiner)

AbacusAvocado · 24/07/2023 20:03

Stones, sticks, conkers, pinecones. Sodding everywhere. Massive rows and upsets if he can’t find the particular bit of nondescript gravel he’s looking for.

HarridanHarvestingHeldaBeans · 24/07/2023 20:06

Here it's twine- baler twine, garden twine, the stuff you use to bind the edges of lobster pots, all of it! In tiny pieces, usually, otherwise it would be used and not stuffed in pockets. They also do a nice sideline in nails, washers and bolts.

Oh I read that title completely wrong and thought you were wondering if Makka Pakka lived alone! I like to think he has some worm friends and maybe a mole as a friendly neighbour.

KnickersBockersGlory · 24/07/2023 20:12

Oh yes, the stones. Some of the stones are in fact rocks the size of my head.

We have a pretty impressive turkey tail mushroom. It's the size of a dinner plate.

We made the mistake of buying a house with sections of the patio covered in pebbles. They are now all over the patio. The steps. The grass. The living room. The kitchen. Her room......

The first thing that went through my head was "hopefully not as that would make him a 2 timing bastard."

I am going to have to admit to being makka pakka myself. I am a bit prone to bringing home interesting things with my DC to do 'artwork' with them. Thankfully we are both happy to dispose of out glorious creations after we have extra ted maximum fun out of them otherwise I think DH would divorce me

HamstersAreMyLife · 24/07/2023 20:26

......in our house I'm the one who collects stones...I can't resist. Be warned DC may never grow out of it 😂

MeinKraft · 24/07/2023 20:28

When my DS was younger I broke the washing machine washing his shorts with pockets full of gravel 🤦🏻‍♀️

immergeradeaus · 24/07/2023 20:30

Omg. I had completely forgotten this phase. Pockets ripped because of the weight of stones the kids were carrying. Seaside plastic buckets with the handles broken because of the stones. Stones in the washing machine, even in the bath.

It’s about eight years, I think, since I last snuck into one of the dc’s bedrooms to remove little heaps of stones. So I promise that for some children at least it is just a phase.

littleripper · 24/07/2023 20:31

Mine are adults and we still have buckets of stones everywhere 😂

Medusaismyhero · 24/07/2023 20:31

Count yourself lucky - mine collects skeletons. Preferably skulls but other bones are fair game too. It's desperately unhygienic AND creepy.

1stepforward2stepsback · 24/07/2023 20:32

Ahh I miss the stone collecting days as mine has now moved on to “mini beasts”, and I need to regularly frisk him for pet wood lice.

Plus I shouldn’t criticise as I found myself a nice pebble on the beach yesterday and it will remain in my coat pocket for weeks.

ChristinaMirabilis · 24/07/2023 20:33

I collect Hag Stones... and other interesting stones. Doesn't everyone?

IaltagDhubh · 24/07/2023 20:43

I think I’m Makka Pakka in this house. We live about as far from the sea as it’s possible to be in the uk, so any time I have the chance to go, I try to find sea glass, interesting pebbles, and hag stones. Just back from Cornwall and I have a small collection of sea glass and striped pebbles. Couldn’t find a hag stone this time. I don’t usually pick up shells though unless I’m sure they are empty - I still remember the smell when I brought some shells home when I was about six, and put them in my wardrobe. One of them was still inhabited…

A lady I used to work with, her daughter had a pet mouse. It was a dead mouse that the cat has bought in. She carried it around in her pocket. When her mum realised, she buried it in the garden and they had a little funeral. She later noticed that her daughter kept peeking in her pocket. She had dug up the mouse, and was most upset when it was removed and disposed of 😂

mnahmnah · 24/07/2023 21:01

Sticks here. Whole collections in pots in the garden. We’re moving house soon and wondering if we will have to take them with us…

Eileen101 · 24/07/2023 21:02

Oh the stones and sticks Wine
