How far do you travel to the gym?

Thinking of joining a new gym that's opened near-ish me because it's MUCH nicer, bigger, has loads more classes that appeal to me, and at more convenient times.

Current gym is a 5 minute drive/20 minute walk and costs £30pm. New gym is £100pm a month, and about a 20 minute drive away though. Wondering if that's too far to travel for a gym really? I'd want to go 5 days a week. Also thinking that if I go to a 45 or 60 minute class or workout that's going to take 2 hours out of my day. Or is this normal for most people going to the gym?

15 min walk to the town centre.

CanYouReachThem · 23/07/2023 18:28

20 minute walk. I use that as my warm up/cool down.

Desperatenow1 · 23/07/2023 18:29

30 seconds - I have a Peloton in an outside gym in my garden, and also have miles and miles of outside heathland walking.

20 mins drive, buts it’s a David Lloyd and I love it!

ilovesooty · 23/07/2023 18:30

My gym is a 20 minute drive away.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 23/07/2023 18:32

20 min walk each way and I go 5 days a week. I love it - and I wonder if you’re near to me?! This gym has just opened and it’s lovely!

louloufaisy · 23/07/2023 18:32

6 min drive or 30 min walk

Getabloominmoveon · 23/07/2023 18:36

16 minute walk (sometimes run) along a seafront, so consider that my warm up.

ImsureIam · 23/07/2023 18:38

15 min walk

LizzieSiddal · 23/07/2023 18:40

Mine’s a 30 minute drive, we live in a little village so no alternative. I don’t like the fact it takes so long but feel it’s worth it for my health.

AlltheFs · 23/07/2023 18:41

I don’t go currently, but our nearest gym (crap) is 20 min drive. Nearest good gym is 40 mins! So I suppose it depends what you are used to and how much time you have.

We do have beautiful walking on the doorstep though, so it is not all bad! And there’s a hotel opening a new small gym
soon (although too many £).

5 mins £30 leisure centre gym, if I could get to a proper plush gym in 20 mins I might consider it, don't seem to have many options here, ours is a bit grotty tbh :(

Fatkittythinkitty · 23/07/2023 18:41

10 minute drive, 30 minute cycle. It's probably the closest one to me. I know that I personally wouldn't make the effort to go if it was much further.

SuperSonicAyeAye · 23/07/2023 18:44

I will only go if it's close, no traffic and parking. So it's a five min drive (up a massive hill). It's a community gym and costs £4 a go. There are lots of nicer gyms but they are a bit further away and I risk meeting traffic jams. (Drive electric car)

MsNevertherefirst · 23/07/2023 18:48

What does it matter what others do? It all depends on how much free time one has as to how much can be given over to gym time.

You need to work this out yourself, based on your life.

leent · 23/07/2023 18:51

15 min walk. There's one 5 min walk but the one further is a council gym and costs a tenner a month, so worth the extra walk.

xyz111 · 23/07/2023 18:56

It doesn't matter what others do. If you want to spend the money on the higher gym and happy with the time it takes, then do that 😀. Are you a regular at the gym? Is it your life? Otherwise you might find the travel distance can become an excuse not to go

Wibbleswombats · 23/07/2023 18:59

I used to drive 30 mins to a good class. Live in a small town tho. I would love to live near a really good swimming pool, the one here is utterly minging.

I do like a nice gym/pool.

QueSyrahSyrah · 23/07/2023 19:00

20 minute drive from home, but 5-6 minute drive from work, so I usually go after work. I don't know that I'd be bothered with 20 minutes there & 20 minutes back on a day off.

Mine is also a plush gym though, and I love it.

Hihihihihihihihihi · 23/07/2023 19:05

My gym is 20 minutes away and for me it is just too far to go frequently (mainly because of time constraints). We have memberships predominantly for the swimming pool as a family at the weekend and instead have bought a peloton to use for exercise during the week

1AnotherOne · 23/07/2023 19:08

Seconds. It’s in my home - peloton bike, treadmill, weights. I miss the gym environment but it does the job.

I would like to join a DL gym but closest is a 45-60 min round trip which I think is too far.

HouseofGods · 23/07/2023 19:11

15 minute drive. Still go 6 days a week and twice some days. If you find something you enjoy then it's not a chore to do the journey

Augend23 · 23/07/2023 19:15

I go to one 15 mins drive away, or a 25 minute cycle.

I used to go to one a 10 minute cycle but it didn't have parking (for cars) so it was horrid if the weather was bad, and the opening hours were inconvenient.

I do have to allow a decent chunk of time, you're right - by the time I've driven there, gymmed, swim and showered and come home it takes a full evening. But it's a luxury and I enjoy it. I usually go 3x a week though, not 5.

febbabies2023 · 23/07/2023 19:18

£100 a month for a gym membership?! 🤯

I mean if you can afford it absolutely do you, but it seems crazy to me that one place can charge that much!

My gym is 8 min drive - £35 per month (can't walk as all country roads) we live in a village

DP drives 25 mins to the next town and pays £20 a month (I think)

ThePatriarchyIsNotAboutHorses · 23/07/2023 19:19

Four miles
