Online grocery delivery for the out of practice

CrapBucket · 22/07/2023 19:58

Boring but I haven’t had my groceries delivered since about 2017, just started a better paid job so I’m very excited and thankful not to have to trudge round Lidl.

In the old days I ordered from a computer, used MySupermarket to get the cheapest supermarket and always found a free delivery discount code. I know those days have gone!

Any tips now please? Most user friendly app… best delivery slots… least substitutions… easiest to combine with google home shopping list?

TIA for any life changing help 🥰

Best delivery slots and fewest substitutions Ocado.

24Dogcuddler · 22/07/2023 22:13

Often have decent discount for new customers too.

user134276 · 22/07/2023 22:14

Definitely ocado. It's not the cheapest but it's cheaper for me than lidl as I only buy what I need. No tempting extras. Also you can order by price and it's super easy to see everything so I find it more transparent than a proper supermarket.

Sewingdufus · 22/07/2023 22:18

Ocado, not the cheapest but reliable and substitution rate has returned to preCovid levels.

Aixellency · 22/07/2023 22:23

Ocado.

Just … easiest. Seamless app with all my favourites ready to go. Convenient slots. Helpful, polite drivers. Price-matched to Tesco, and I often get a follow-up email with a voucher for the pennies or pounds they’ve charged me over the Tesco price.

I wasn’t happy when they parted company with Waitrose. Almost over it now. And although I have a weekly veg box from elsewhere I do still buy some basic fruit and veg from Ocado.

Honestly couldn’t be bothered with anywhere else right now.

marshmallowfinder · 22/07/2023 22:28

Use Topcashback for online supermarket shopping , whoever you decide to go with. I've been with Asda for years and they're pretty good overall.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 22/07/2023 22:29

Another vote for ocado
the app lets you do one click additions without checking out again.
can’t remember the last time I had a sub
no quibble refunds if anything is faulty/squished
most weeks my bill is cheaper than Tesco but this obviously varies on what you buy.
dh has a special diet and they are very clear with labelling and have good options for him,
I pay for a monthly mid week delivery pass - 3.99 per month, can have any deliveries Tuesday-Thursday free if over £40

User894532765 · 22/07/2023 22:29

I still order on my iMac, it's a lot easier than a phone or iPad, the website is still there

User894532765 · 22/07/2023 22:30

That is Tesco mainly but sometimes Waitrose or Ocado.

blondieminx · 22/07/2023 22:31

I think it depends on the store that delivers to you.

I like Tesco, the ability to leave notes on each item about dates or subs helps you get a shop that suits rather than based on the pickers guess work.

I agree. I have had a weekly delivery from them for the last 12 years. Outside Covid i almost never get subs, when I do they are sensible ones.

User894532765 · 22/07/2023 22:32

I don't like Ocado so much.

NewLeafAgain · 22/07/2023 22:32

Think for availability it depends on your area. For example three Tesco's about same distance, in different directions, from my house. One seems perpetually low on stock for fresh stuff, one has so much stock lots seems to be close to date and the other seems mostly spot on.
Asda near here is dire, but family 30mins away love theirs.
Sainsbury's deliveries come from 30 mins drive away and I feel to guilty to order from that far away when there's multiple Tesco's close to me.
So I use Tesco, and the points I earn are converted into delivery saver passes so it's free delivery - most weekdays before lunch I can get same day delivery slots (min basket £50), and most days I can get a click and collect (min basket £25)

Aixellency · 22/07/2023 22:46

That’s the beauty of Ocado - they’re not picking stock from a store.

I probably don’t make enough use of my any time delivery pass (£8.99 per month) but it is very convenient when I need it to be.

AdaColeman · 22/07/2023 22:49

Ocado for reliability of deliveries and few substitutions.

Aside from their M&S products, their range of goods and companies isn't as wide as it was a few years ago, but they still have some interesting items. I like the fresh fish, and they seem to have a good range of vegetarian & vegan items.

TeleTropes · 22/07/2023 22:51

Morrisons uses the same software/system as Ocado and I find it to be cheaper.

WhoHidTheCoffee · 22/07/2023 22:51

Where I live, Sainsburys is best. Always on time, friendly helpful drivers, and few substituions. You can specify whether you’d accept a substitution or not when you order and can amend up to 2300 the night before. We have very rarely had issues.

If you’re going to get regular deliveries, their passes are good value.

Bluebirds1987 · 22/07/2023 22:54

I've used various ones and at the moment Asda works well for us. A good variety of produce, pretty cheap, there's often subs but they are usually fairly sensible. Tesco often had things missing but didn't sub them so we stopped using them. Have also used Morrisons but wasn't as keen on the quality of some things (clothes are the exception, they have lovely clothing!).
I've only used Ocado with those introductory 20% off vouchers or with money off - far too expensive for me to use all the time. But probs had by far the best selection and quality of items.
I'd say if you're thinking of having a regular delivery slot, get a delivery pass - think all the supermarkets do them. Maybe try a few supermarket deliveries with each supermarket first to see which you like best.

We also like the click and collect at Asda. you don't have to wait around for a delivery person, you can literally order the day and it's only 50p and they always have slots, but they aren't always careful (eg bread squashed at the bottom).

If you're really in a rush there's also Amazon shopping who do 2 hour deliveries, I'm not sure if supermarkets do this themselves too (I know Morrisons do, and they are part of the Amazon thing).

almostoverthehill · 22/07/2023 22:54

I use Sainsburys saver slots as they are only £1/2

MrsHazel · 22/07/2023 22:56

I hate Ocado for not being able to order one onion or similar rather than a whole packaged bag.

I don't like Sainsbury's because they don't refund for substitutes that are more expensive, just give you a time limited voucher.

Asda are the nicest delivery people round here but Waitrose is also pretty reliable. Iceland are quite good but you don't seem to be able to reject substitutions.

UselessAtPacking · 22/07/2023 23:06

Never any tesco issues. I tend to collect.
Cant remember the last sub i had. Must be a good 3 months ago.
I tend to buy stores own brand so when it is subbed it tends to be with large brands so always a win.

Borborygmus · 22/07/2023 23:06

I used Asda for a couple of years but switched to Tesco a few months ago. Asda seemed OK at the time but had a pretty high substitution rate (7.6%), and short dated items were fairly common (though that might be considered a plus since they'd always refund and you'd get to keep the item).

However Tesco seems to be a vast improvement, and so far I've had a very low substitution rate (0.5%) and no short dated items. Unlike Asda, their delivery tracking seems to work too. Of course the improvement may be due to the fact that my Tesco deliveries come from one of their dedicated online picking hubs rather than from a conventional store.

Twite · 22/07/2023 23:09

If you can get Morrisons in your area I recommend it. Good range, decent prices often better than Tesco's, reliable deliveries with only the occasional substitution that they always inform you about in advance. Fab website which is nice to use, unlike the horrible clunky Tesco's and Sainsbury's ones. Fruit and veg is of decent quality and generally keeps a while (unless soft berries like strawberries). Good availability of delivery slots and monthly delivery pass is £7

GentlemenPreferBlondes · 22/07/2023 23:09

Ocado is good but it is very expensive if you would otherwise buy the supermarket economy items (Tesco value). If you buy supermarket mid range or actual branded stuff then it is comparable. For the cheaper stuff in my experience it really depends on your local supermarket which it’s delivered from - for me Tesco is terrible, for my friend in the next town hers is great. They all usually offer first order discounts, so try and make up your own mind.
