Online grocery delivery for the out of practice

CrapBucket · 22/07/2023 19:58

Boring but I haven’t had my groceries delivered since about 2017, just started a better paid job so I’m very excited and thankful not to have to trudge round Lidl.

In the old days I ordered from a computer, used MySupermarket to get the cheapest supermarket and always found a free delivery discount code. I know those days have gone!

Any tips now please? Most user friendly app… best delivery slots… least substitutions… easiest to combine with google home shopping list?

TIA for any life changing help 🥰

Ocado. Easy to use app and deliver in bags (which they recycle)
Tesco, Sainsbury's bring crates of goods which you have to empty yourself so items all over the hall/kitchen plus they substitute more

Ocado price match with Tesco at the moment, so if your Ocado shop has cost more, a few days later you get a voucher for the amount, to use off your next shop.

Thanks- this is brilliant- I would not have even considered Ocado, but if they price match then that’s great news for me!!

Another vote for Ocado. Stock levels online are usually accurate for your delivery slot so very rarely get out of stock / substitutions. Life of fresh produce is usually good. Bit annoying that they’re now with M&S as M&S products are more expensive than Waitrose, but the Ocado branded stuff is done.

We used Sainsbury’s for years until we switched to Ocado 3 years ago. With Sainsbury’s, we had constant issues with items out of stock or short life on fresh produce. We would do our weekly shop, and it got to the point where for almost every delivery, the meats and poultry would expire the following day or the day after. Their refund policy for short life items was 48 hours after delivery, but then they changed it to that day or the following day, and that was the trigger for us changing. We get our deliveries in the late evening, so already lost a day and could no longer claim a refund for anything that expired two days after delivery. It made no sense that this people who would get their deliveries in the morning benefitted from the two days but those of us who had them in the evening didn’t.

Yes good point PP made about Ocado bags. They do charge you for the bags, but they also give you a refund for any bags you recycle. In my experience, the drivers always register more than you give them so you get a few extra pennies for the bags.

Another for Sainsburys. I’ve a midweek delivery pass which I thought was good value. I rarely have substitutes and if I do rarely return them. I can always get a slot I want. I prefer the www. to the app. I also like the fact you can add everything from a previous shop straight into the basket so I’m always half done within a few clicks.

I think their veg last longer than Aldi, I only buy Aldi fruit and veg if I’m sure I’m going to use it with five days. That said sainsburys mince is now pants and I buy that in Aldi, and Aldi sirloin or rump steak tastes lovely. We have a bit of a hike to Aldi but if I lived closer I’d probably do a lot more there as is hugely cheaper. Recently went to Morrisons and was shocked at some of their prices.

Another vote for Ocado. Their app is a dream to use. They always have loads of delivery slots, and rarely substitute. Getting refunds is really easy too.

If you have the app they even ping you when you're their next stop.

JuneOsborne · 23/07/2023 07:37

I've never used ocado, but it sounds just like morrisons, which I do use. App is fab, has the one click addition thing as well as the you're next ping.

If you order close to your delivery slot, they only show you what's in stock, cutting down on subs. I very rarely get a sub, even if I place the order a week before delivery.

I pay about £40 a year for a midweek delivery pass. Free delivery Tues-Thurs.

All my favourites are on there, very easy to do the basic shop without much thought.

I find Ocado the best for delivery slots and no substitutions. Their system is so easy to use but now they have m&s stuff on their I find my self tempted to buy random things! Asda would be my 2nf for delivery slots as I can sometimes get same day but I don't use them very often. I've started using Sainsbury's a bit now but find they have less slots and I always have substitutions

But don't Morrisons charge you more if the sub you have is more expensive than what you ordered? Asda and Waitrose do the subs for the same or cheaper. I thought Morrisons was awful due to that!

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 23/07/2023 09:07

Ocado don't deliver everywhere.

We use Tesco as they're the most reliable for us. Morrisons were horrendous - loads of substitutions and the drivers were never on time. Sainsbury's don't deliver here either so the only other choice was ASDA - and having worked for them, I'd never trust their home shopping 😬

User894532765 · 23/07/2023 09:14

I find Tesco is the most reliable and any substitutions usually seem to be larger packs, so a 6 pack instead of a 2 pack or larger eggs for the same price, some of the others charge more if the substitution is better.

PretendUsername · 23/07/2023 10:02

Morrisons prices have shot up in the last 12, months. It's a proper piss take, used to be the cheapest supermarket and now I'm paying m&s prices for low quality food. I've been using them for years but now I've had enough and will switch to Tesco now

fancreek · 23/07/2023 11:38

Ocado is WAY more expensive. They might prove match on branded items but have far less own brand and it's more expensive, very little loose veg etc.
