Has anyone actually bought anything from Temu?

Keep seeing adverts for temu popping up on my FB and on MN so had a quick look

Has anyone bought anything from them and is it just cheap tat?
I checked out shein too after it being spoken about so much. I was expecting super cheap stuff but £15.99 for a toddler hoody....seemed steep to me?!
Is it a case of some stuff being super cheap and some stuff being over priced to make up the difference in cost on the cheap sales?

do none of you buying from this awful company give a shit about the fact they use slaves to make this shit you’re buying?

the poster letting her 8 year old buy plastic crap - it might have been made by a child not much older - does that genuinely not bother you?

Polyester can be toxic and to keep babies away from it. Skin exposure to Polyester can cause rashes, itching, redness, eczema, dermatitis, blistering or make existing skin problems worse for those with sensitive skin, up to 3 days late, also it's cheaply made.

And do you have a reliable source for this?

Exactly, also the material are very toxic to your body and a hazard.

Yes I do it's scientifically proven. Don't worry go ahead if you don't believe me.

ohsuzannah · 06/08/2023 21:57

What about Joom? I've bought from them.

Well, if it's scientifically proven please share the sources.

Shouldn't be difficult.

ConsuelaHammock · 06/08/2023 22:30

What do you need that you need to buy it there. Could you try charity shops ?

Just FYI I never bought anything from them in the end and never will. Not shein or wish or any other company like it.
I just decided if I can't afford ethically manufactured stuff then I'll just have to wait or look about in charity shops if I get time..

Id be so concerned about the integrity of plastics or paints used particularly for children's toys.

Not me, no. But I know a few ladies who have bought clothing from it. You can tell it is from Temu. Badly dyed, badly made, and looks like they would melt in horrific fashion if a naked flame was close enough.

Can you genuinely name an ethical manufacturer? From start to finish.

stevalnamechanger · 06/08/2023 23:14

Yes :

I bought some great foam sliders to wear in the house , an eyebrow grooming set , some cleansing cloths , face wash sponges , scrunchies,

Temu is adamant I have need for a 'poledancing sloth' shower curtain.

Reader, I do not.

That is so 🤣 🤣🤣. We joke DH is a sloth because he likes his sleep. Maybe he needs this.

Nat6999 · 06/08/2023 23:19

You can buy more or less the same stuff from Shein, I wouldn't be surprised if the companies are linked.

Also prisoner labour. Chinese produce is an ethical and ecological minefield.

OhcantthInkofaname · 06/08/2023 23:29

I bought from Temu. It got to the mid-US in about 10 days. Most items usable. I have another cart in process.

Plan toys (made in Thailand, available here) always score well on being independently scrutinised from source to product. Strongly opposed to dubious child labour/worker exploitation. Sponsor local community programmes. Sustainable etc.

Their whole ethos is pretty impressive; not PR 'greenwashing' a few supposedly ethical brands are guilty of.

However, all the above is reflected in their £££ prices. Way beyond my budget, sadly. Always cheering when I discover one of their items in a charity shop or on 2nd hand sales sites, though!

I agree it can sometimes be hard to tell.

However, knowingly buying from a company that is highly likely to use slave labour for its products is surely a basic no-no?

It's interesting I work in a very 'activisty' workplace where most of my colleagues wouldn't buy nestle or cola products because of the human impact and began boycotting a lot of companies that they feel financially enable Israel's treatment of Palestine. Yet all are obsessed with Temu. I don't shop there but I gather they have some sort of fish competition where you collect fish the more you buy or something? Anyway whatever it is their PR dept is doing certainly works.

I am a believer that criticising anyone who isn't perfect in their consumer habits is pointless because within the system that we live it's practically impossible to send our money only to places that are 100% ethical - we should all aim to do a bit rather than a couple of people bask in the glory of being perfect. I just think it's interesting that they've sort of collectively decided that nestle/Amazon/cola/McDonald's = bad but temu and Shein = acceptable.
