What oily fish do you eat and what do you do with it?

Trying to make a bit more of an effort to eat healthily (me and one teenager at home.) I eat salmon once or twice a week but dc hates it. I don’t think they will eat any kind of oily fish but I thought I could get something different and they could try it.

What oily fish do you eat and how do you cook it? What do you serve it with? What do the dc/teenagers like? Thanks!

I use tinned sardines to make fishcakes with potato, cheese and herbs. You can make a batch and freeze them.

TheGander · 21/07/2023 10:59

I think salmon is a bit of a gateway oily fish so you might struggle with DS eating others!
I marinate salmon steaks in a mix of honey, soya sauce and grated fresh ginger and roast in the oven on medium , just 15 minutes is enough.
Ill take a fresh mackerel fillet and grill, serve with beetroot and horseradish sauce.
I like kippers with buttered granary bread.
Tinned Sardines in tomato sauce will also give you the benefits of the omega 3 ( but not tinned in oil as the omega 3s leeches into the oil). Hope this helps!

Smoked mackerel with salad or made into a pâté with toast.

tinned aparently doesn't count.
we like smoked makarel and make a sort of pate with it (blend it with cream cheese).
grilled salmon is always nice (a bit pricey)

Findyourneutralspace · 21/07/2023 11:04

One of mine likes tinned mackerel or sardines on toast, the ones in tomato sauce. I always have a few tins in the cupboard and he often makes them for his lunch or a late night snack.

Greenfishy · 21/07/2023 11:04

Smoked mackerel pasta and smoked mackerel with roasted sweet potato and beetroot, hoummous, feta
Tinned sardines on toast with avocado

Ive never done fresh mackerel but I must give it a go, and I like PP’s suggestion of sardine into fish cakes!!

Whaaaat? Why doesn’t tinned count?

InDubiousBattle · 21/07/2023 11:05

Smoked mackerel pate is one of my favourite foods, plus it's very easy to make. I also love smoked mackerel with a poached egg and toast.

With tinned you do get the benefits of the omega 3 if it’s tinned in tomato sauce, not in oil.

Ostryga · 21/07/2023 11:07

Dd will eat salmon that I flour egg breadcrumb with panko and deep fry (I use coconut or avocado oil) and is fussy as all hell so they might give it a go?

Orherwise I make smoked mackerel pate with cream cheese she’ll sometimes have on crackers. Smoked salmon (I call it fish bacon 😂)

I make fish cakes with canned mackerel/sardines and they generally go down well. Put cheese in them!

Yes! Doesn’t matter the sauce, it’s the fish itself with the good stuff.

TheGander · 21/07/2023 11:10

At least that’s what the party line used to be ( I’m a state registered dietitian) but having done a quick Google, seems it doesn’t make a difference. In any case you will get the benefits of omega 3s from tinned sardines.

Greenfishy · 21/07/2023 11:10

Aaah ok. I get tomato sauce for mackerel and the smoked stuff. I can’t remember what I get sardines in but I don’t think it’s oil cos I wouldn’t like that!

Easyontheeyes · 21/07/2023 11:10

I just read tinned tuna doesn’t count but the others like mackerel and sardines do?

Salmon mainly and we started the children on homemade tinned salmon fish cakes when they were toddlers and moved on to salmon fillets with just butter, salt and black pepper. Then they moved onto Cajun seasoning and we also do soy, garlic, ginger salmon with some spring onions in with the salmon and marinade. Dh hates dill, I love it but as we make individual parcels at times it is easy for everyone to have what they want.

Dh and I both eat mackerel but it is too strong for the children, I say children they are 20 and 17 now and we have salmon once a week. They also eat white fish, I know it isn't part of the oily but I am at least grateful for that. Dh eats tinned sardines but we try to ignore that and remember all the lovely things he does Grin

Tinned salmon mixed with mayo, and salady bits for a great big sandwich on good bread is my favourite easy way to get the Omega in.

I try with tinned sardines and mackerel but god they are a bit smelly, and the BONES, the BONES.....

Mixed fish (including salmon) fishcakes are nice too, easy on the white fish for the oily benefits, but all fish is good anyway.

Augustus40 · 21/07/2023 11:27

Tinned sardines definitely counted on Tonight programme this week.

CC4712 · 21/07/2023 11:32

I forgot that tuna steak and swordfish steak are good too when grilled or BBQ'd.

GoFaster83 · 21/07/2023 11:32

I make a makarel salad with lettuce cucumber, tiny baby potatoes, onion and mayo. Its lovely.

Jericha · 21/07/2023 11:35

I use the sweet chilli salmon fillets that both aldi and Tesco sell in a spicy stir fry. I also make fish pies. I don't actually like salmon but only eat it for the health benefits and I find these two meals are quite palatable!

Tuna isn't a great source of Omega 3 anyway, but tinned has hardly any. All tinned fish has lower levels than fresh but is cheaper and more accessible to most people so is still a good option
The best oily fish are mackerel kippers
pilchards trout sprats and then salmon sardines crab (fresh only) whitebait and swordfish

calmcoco · 21/07/2023 11:44

I just eat smoked mackerel on its own, I only eat it for health reasons.

StormShadow · 21/07/2023 11:48

Smoked mackerel stir fried with soy, tomatoes, peppers, sriracha and onions. Delicious either with rice or on toast. However, I am an oily fish person... it might not be a good gateway one.

Coastalcreeksider · 21/07/2023 11:49

I eat smoked mackerel or smoked salmon with salad, baked salmon with lemon or lime and cracked black pepper or spread with cream cheese and herbs on it and bake it that way.

Occasionally I do the salmon and cream cheese wrapped in puff pastry. Really nice.
