What oily fish do you eat and what do you do with it?

Trying to make a bit more of an effort to eat healthily (me and one teenager at home.) I eat salmon once or twice a week but dc hates it. I don’t think they will eat any kind of oily fish but I thought I could get something different and they could try it.

What oily fish do you eat and how do you cook it? What do you serve it with? What do the dc/teenagers like? Thanks!

Fresh tuna counts but not tinned. It pretty much tastes like tinned if you cook it well done so could use in same way.
tinned salmon counts too
sashimi - expensive though! Def tastes different to cooked salmon (am not a big salmon fan but eat it cos it’s healthy)

Sardines in tomato sauce mashed up with a dash of chilli sauce = instant pate

Lidl do some interesting tins of fish

Rollmops - excellent in a brown bread sandwich with too much salad

Smoked mackerel in a stir fry, Thai style with fish sauce and chilli
or
In kedgeree

Tuna, fresh, frozen or tinned does not count

I forgot that tuna steak and swordfish steak are good too when grilled or BBQ'd.

Twice as good as salmon and trout which eat flies. Tuna and swordfish eat mackerel and sardines so they are doubly-oiled by the time we eat them.

What do I do with them? I take them in the bath and play with them first. I like to push them along with my nose and then flip them up into the air as I make some high pitched clicking noises.

Fresh sardines or sea bream . Grill simply with oil salt and a bit of pesto

OMG- I nearly spat my drink out laughing at this! 😂

I really liked smoked mackerel with peppercorns when I was a kid and not particularly in love with fish other than fish and chips. So it's worth a try.

I like the tinned sardines in oil with chilli and no skin or bones - M& S do them as do Waitrose.

Mackerel with mustardy dressing with potatoes and watercress.

Tuna on the BBQ

Salmon in soy sauce and ginger or the chilli sweet sauce in a bottle.

Swordfish kebabs on the bbq.

Jugged kippers or kippers on the BBQ - lovely in a white bap.

Smoked mackerel rice is one of DS's(13) faves. I sort of made it up when he was a toddler, but it's basically a risotto made with basmati rice instead. Diced onion & carrots; frozen peas when rice nearly done. Stir through a heaped tablespoon of cream cheese and then flaked smoked mackerel (pick the bones out first). Guess actual risotto would work too, but on a week night basmati is easier.

He'll also eat devilled mackerel coz he likes spicy stuff. I use a recipe from a rick stein book we've got which link takes you I use whole mackerel or fillets and tend to pan fry or stick in the oven (200) rather than grill. Minty potatoes on the side and then whatever veg or salad.

devilled mackerel

Devilled Mackerel with Mint and Tomato Salad

This devilled mackerel recipe from Rick Stein is simple, healthy and very tasty. These are grilled but can just as easily be be barbequed.

The advice on here is a bit mixed but as a qualified dietician I can confirm Tuna is not an oily fish. Salmon, Mackerel, Anchovies and Sardines and Herrings are (SMASH).

My typical recipes with oily fish are:

  • Salmon Thai Curry and rice
  • Honey Mustard Salmon stir fried veg rice
  • Smoked Salmon and Avocado and Poached eggs on toast
  • Tinned Salmon and potato fish cakes
  • Peppered Smoked Mackerel mixed with Mr Organic ketchup and lemon juice with oat cakes or sourdough toast
  • Chicken Ceaser salad with anchovies

Salmon risotto always gets munched by our kids easily. We have also been growing courgettes and beans in the garden so throw those in and they also get eaten happily in this! And I love a one pot meal for less washing up 😆

NoSunNoSun · 22/07/2023 08:44

I have tinned mackerel with jacket potatoes or fresh with an and tomatoes.
I eat smoked salmon or regular salmon for lunch or dinner either in a salad or with vegetables and rice. I particularly enjoyed smoked salmon with avocado.

gogomoto · 22/07/2023 08:45

I love mackerel, also herrings. I like to serve with potatoes dressed in sour cream and dill plus watercress salad

NoSunNoSun · 22/07/2023 08:45

Mackerel with an egg that should say.

TheModHatter · 22/07/2023 08:53

A packet of smoked salmon off cuts with scrambled egg. The egg disguises the fishiness of the salmon.

tinned aparently doesn't count.
we like smoked makarel and make a sort of pate with it (blend it with cream cheese).
grilled salmon is always nice (a bit pricey)

It's only tinned Tuna I think that doesn't count

happysunr1se · 22/07/2023 08:53

I like a mackerel burger;
Fresh mackerel fillet, pan fried then put in a brioche bun with some thinly sliced raw white onion, a bit of lettuce, lots of mayo and a bit squeeze of lemon juice. Very messy to eat and delicious!

OMalleytheAlleyyCat · 23/07/2023 21:13

I find Mackerel is nice broken up in a spicy, paprika sauce with pasta (fresh tagliatelle is good), garlic , lemon, Parsley. . Always buy smoked fillets from the fridge aisle instead of tinned. I hate Mackerel so take it from me😂

4weeknoalcohol · 23/07/2023 21:18

Smoked salmon, scrambled eggs and blinis. Sea bass with chermoula chickpeas. Smoked mackerel on toast. Mackerel in tomato sauce on toast. I try to cook tuna fresh but it never works but I keep trying.
