Yorkshire Gold drinkers - have you found a satisfactory alternative?

It's getting so expensive and has microplastics in so want to find another tea - but every time we try something else we end up back on YG.

Have tried:

Clipper
Yorkshire
PG Tips
Typhoo
Aldi Gold
Sainsburys Gold
Waitrose Gold
Marks Gold
Marks Strong
Tetley
Twinings Everyday
All the red labels (Sainsburys, Co op, Tesco)

Has anyone moved to another tea that's OK? If it's plastic free that's a bonus

@Fuckingmentalme quite right darling Grin

We bought Aldi's Diplomat teabags when Yorkshire Gold went extortionate. Surprisingly similar, DH wouldn't have noticed if the bags weren't round.

Also all Aldi teabags are micro plastic free, I believe, and compostable.

The best tea bags I have found are Waitrose Extra Strong and Northumberland Tea (Jack's Tea).
No idea about plastics I'm afraid.

Loose leaf tea is a game changer, I bought one of these and use punjana loose leaf (bird and blend tea is amazing but pricey so I only get as a treat)

I am currently drinking Betty's tea room blend tea which I was sent as part of a gift. The tea bags are £6 for 80 so quite pricey. I much prefer it to my usual PG Tips so am heading more upmarket for my future purchases.

Betty's is Assam according to the website so I might switch to pure Assam when I run out asa PP suggested. No clue on micro plastics - how can they be in tea bags???

Thompson's Tea is a smidge above Yorkshire Gold. Not sure it's cheaper as I have to get it online but it's a cracking cuppa!

Piccalillii · 21/07/2023 08:08

So this morning I've got loose leaf YG 'cut' with tea and coffee company english breakfast and it's pretty good.

Ocado were out of Barrys, but I'm going to Wales for the weekend so can look for glengettie to try.

Now if someone can help me crack my Badoit/Evian sparkling/San Pelegrino habit that would be amazing

As the user name states, punjana is THE tea. It's pretty similar to Thompson's Irish breakfast tea (same company). I order online but if I run out it's Yorkshire gold.

Have you got a Ringtons van round in your postcode?

I love their tea, and the biscuits are fab. The teacakes make Tunnocks look like amateurs!

unfor · 23/07/2023 21:11

I like the Thompson's signature tea and it's almost always on offer in Morrisons

tanstaafl · 24/07/2023 08:59

For those brewing in the cup ( surely it’s not just me? ) , how long do you give it?
4 minutes is my usual time.

motherofawhirlwind · 29/07/2023 21:16

No one will like my answer. Bag in cup, fill with water, bag literally straight out / no agitation at all and then either use the bag to make another cup the exact same way for the boss, or make someone else a stronger one with it. One sugar, no milk.

Sorry....

Thompson's Punjana

Akiddleetivy2woodenchu · 29/07/2023 21:45

Birchalls Great Rift is excellent. The loose tea is even better.

TeaMistress · 29/07/2023 21:50

Try loose tea. No microplastics and compostable. As long as you have a decent tea mesh filter the tea world is your oyster. I love a really strong malty breakfast tea and the variety of tea available is amazing.

I highly recommend Cornish tea!

No microplastics and cost about 3p a teabag if you buy them in the big bags. Direct from them postage is £5.50 which is about the same price as buying them from Amazon.

If you live anywhere near Trago Mills at Truro, they sell those big bags even cheaper!

Coming on to say this!

Grumblevision · 30/07/2023 00:47

It's a bit of a wade into the unknown but if you have a packaging-free place near you, sometimes that's a bit cheaper than buying loose leaf in a supermarket. Probably not much though. But you can buy very little just to try it, so a safe bet in that regard.

justaweeone · 02/08/2023 06:54

Yorkshire tea drinker here. I was in B&M today and bought a box of 40 Yorkshire Gold for £2 just to try it! Worried it might end up being my new favourite tea.
