Folk Horror Book Recommendations?

NoChanceYouMetalBastard · 18/07/2023 15:00

I have just finished The Creeper by A M Shine. LOVED it. Also loved the earlier book, think it was called the watcher/watchers.

Can anyone recommend anything similar? I love folk horror/creepy tales.

Do enjoy a Laura Purcell but haven't found her latest offerings to be as good/creepy as The Silent Companions.

Was recently recommended Pine by Francine Toon. That's £2.99 I'll never get back! Found it dull and predictable and not remotely spooky.

Recommendations gratefully received 🙂

I don't know if these are quite horror enough for you, but they are definitely creepy and have that rural horror vibe -

Folk, by Zoe Gilbert (interconnected short stories)
Elmet, by Fiona Mozley
The Manningtree Witches, by AK Blakemore.

Agree re. Pine, it was quite hyped and I couldn't finish it.

Ooh The Manningtree Witches is actually on my wish list. I keep being put off by some of the not so favourable reviews. Might have to take the plunge!

Thanks :-)

I loved The Manningtree Witches! It takes a bit of getting into as the writing style is so unusual - dense and poetic and a bit weird. She has another one coming out soon which I'm looking forward to.

Dark Matter by Michelle Paver. I listened to the audio book and it was such a good performance, thoroughly recommended.

Wakenhyrst by Michelle Paver?

Helpwhatwouldyoudonext · 18/07/2023 15:51

Not quite folk horror but an amazing book,
The Dig by Cynan Jones.

Also try
The Loney by Andrew Michael Hurley
The Yellow Wallpaper - oldie but goodie!!

Wakenhyrst by Michelle Paver?

That's also on my wish list! I have been waiting for the price to drop because I am tight-fisted 😂I feel like I have failed if I pay more than two quid for a 'book' that I can't even properly hold!

Yy to Dark Matter by Michelle Paver! I actually preferred it to Wakenhyrst - Dark Matter genuinely spooked me.

I wasn't blown away by Pine either.

Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand is nicely spooky as well. I've forgotten all my favourites, this always happens when I come to make a recommendation!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 18/07/2023 17:39

I agree Dark Matter is a better book. Scarier and more haunting.

GreenOli · 18/07/2023 18:16

Lots of books I want to try on here now. The Yellow Wallpaper is on my shelf unread... I'm waiting until the nights draw in for extra creepiness.

GreenOli · 18/07/2023 18:17

Really enjoyed The Loney too.

LunaNorth · 18/07/2023 18:20

Another vote for The Loney.

Lammy by Max Porter has a folky vibe, and it does have suspense, if not horror.

ArbitraryHaddock · 18/07/2023 18:22

The Ritual by Adam Neville

Sashadasha · 18/07/2023 18:27

Marking my spot to come back.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

The Magic Cottage by James Herbert

That should say 'Water Shall Refuse Them'

Saverage · 18/07/2023 20:11

Ooh just my thread. I second Shirley Jackson, The Loney and The Yellow Wallpaper.

Will have a think of my own recommendations and also look up some of the others on the thread.

Jewelanemone · 18/07/2023 20:18

Water Shall Refuse Them is So. Good.

Piapea · 18/07/2023 20:22

Where I end by Sophie White. It just won the Shirley Jackson award for horror fiction. It's next in my list.

Screamingabdabz · 18/07/2023 20:27

I enjoyed the Skendleby series by Nick Brown and latterly Wicker Dogs by D A Hollwill.

PriamFarrl · 18/07/2023 21:42

I loved Wakenhyrst. I borrowed the ebook from the library.
