Folk Horror Book Recommendations?

I have just finished The Creeper by A M Shine. LOVED it. Also loved the earlier book, think it was called the watcher/watchers.

Can anyone recommend anything similar? I love folk horror/creepy tales.

Do enjoy a Laura Purcell but haven't found her latest offerings to be as good/creepy as The Silent Companions.

Was recently recommended Pine by Francine Toon. That's £2.99 I'll never get back! Found it dull and predictable and not remotely spooky.

Recommendations gratefully received 🙂

I have just finished The Burning Girls. Decent 3.5 out of 5 for me!

Have to admit I found it a bit predictable. Also massive overuse of the word "pad"! She padded into the kitchen. She padded down the stairs. She padded into the bathroom. Stop!

Debating Wakenhyrst or Dark Matter next.

I felt exactly the same about The Burning Girls. Fun and clever but some aspects were predictable.
I loved Waykenhyrst but unlike everyone else it seems I found Dark Matter predicable and not chilling.

Not fiction, but a very interesting read: The Burning of Bridget Cleary by Angela Bourke. Looks at deeply held folk beliefs in rural Ireland and the various historical and social strands surrounding the murder of a young woman by her husband, his friends and relatives.

That sounds very interesting.

I have had Waykenhyrst in my list for a while, so I think I will go for that one first Smile

Also finished The Burning Girls. Downrated to 4 because firstly I guessed the twist and secondly I didn’t quite believe it.
I really liked the way she kept you guessing with the characters though.

I think you might enjoy Catriona Ward, particularly Little Eve. Maybe Rawblood too. Actually all of them 😜

I guessed it too. Certainly worth a read but not right up there for me, unfortunately.

byronicheroine - I have read Little Eve - did enjoy it. Haven't read Rawblood so will add that to my list.
