So I've been fast tracked to an ultrasound (I'll have it on Friday). The doctor also bent the rules and gave me a mammogram even though I'm too young for one. IME the NHS drag their feet when it comes to diagnostics (it took them 12 years for a separate condition). So I'm a bit worried about this expedite service.

Sorry to hear that OP, it must be very worrying for you. I don't have any advice but hopefully someone who does will be along soon. Have you got stuff to keep you busy while you wait for Friday? Flowers

MinnieMountain · 18/07/2023 08:20

What do you mean by too young for a mammogram? I first had one on a fibroid when I was 21.
There’s a within 2 weeks requirement for anything like you have.

Did they find anything on the mammogram. It’s hard but try not to worry until you know anything for sure, it could be a whole host of things, but it’s good you are getting an urgent appointment.

onefinemess · 18/07/2023 08:26

What do you mean by "my nipple is not normal"?

Do you mean it was like that before the examination but they ignored it, or that something during the procedure injured you in some way?

smilesup · 18/07/2023 08:27

I had several mammograms before 40. The surgeon is wrong or not clear.

nasanas · 18/07/2023 08:27

What's wrong with your nipple?

ZannahStop · 18/07/2023 08:29

He meant you wouldn't get routine ones under 40, and is wrong anyway since its 50

He hasn't bent the rules at all so don't worry about that.

adviceseeker22 · 18/07/2023 08:37

The radiologist said that she needed to discuss the mammogram with her supervisor and then left in a cubicle for like 10 mins. Both the nurse and the surgeon mentioned the 40 year old rule, so it must be a trust thing.

I have bleeding warts / skin tags in my nipple. It stinks too, and sometimes I have a watery (slightly denser) discharge. The growths have also multiplied and grown since I first noticed them.

The truth radiologist emphasied the beed for an ultrasound.

adviceseeker22 · 18/07/2023 12:32

I've looked into it and the 40 year rule is because of the density of the breast tissue.

No, that's for screening. It's how they decide what's most beneficial to both women but also nhs budgets and capabilities.

If you have a specific problem, like you, there is no rule regardless of your age.

adviceseeker22 · 19/07/2023 05:32

The joys! Thanks to Google now I know that my warts look exactly like canverogenic anal warts, and what I call "coral like" is often called "cauliflower like".

Considering it's uncommon, I don't think I'll have proper answers any time soon..

you've misunderstood, 40 is for routine screening mammograms, anyone can be referred to one

No I didn't misunderstand. The nurse clearly said I wasn't getting one done. The surgeon said exactly the same when she greeted me. After she saw me and she was basically sending me my way (but has already given me the "pass" for an ultrasound) she said that I might as well get the mammogram even if it not within the age range as I wasn't that far off, I'm late 30, and they do them 40s and older.

you did misunderstand, how do you think so many people in their 20s and 30s get diagnosis then! It is completely normal for breast abnormalities. It is the first point of call.

orangeleavesinautumn · 19/07/2023 06:19

I spend hours every month in the breast clinic, there is no age restriction at all on referral for mammograms

orangeleavesinautumn · 19/07/2023 06:20

My daughters and nieces have just had mammograms in their late teens/ twenties, and will continue to have them regularly, due to a genetic fault

WarriorN · 19/07/2023 06:22

Maybe call

breastcancernow.org/

I had an mri as mammogram was too dense (young boobs they said.)

Yes that was my understanding of the whole ordeal. Also because I didn't go for a "standard lump" but for other stuff, i.e. the nipple.

Fine I misunderstood. It doesn't take away the fact that bleeding warts aren't that common, and that I'm yet to find someone with a similar case to mine. Nothing on Facebook nor Reddit with thousands upon thousands of users.

Has it happened to you? Do you have inverted nipples? Are you HPV+?

I have breast cancer and spend many hours a week with other people who have breast cancer, in the breast clinic, in the chemotherapy suite, in the support groups online and in person, in physio, ( for two hours today) in the imaging areas, etc etc etc, and my entire family has just been screened as well

The how come the doctor had no real idea what it was?

I'm really worried for me (and my husband too) in case it turns out to be my HPV.

but they have sent you for screening to find out what it is? Anyway, I am leaving this thread, I was trying to be reassuring, but went about it all the wrong way

sorrynotathome · 19/07/2023 06:52

What exactly are you worried about? You’ve been fast tracked so you will get diagnosed within the time frame. If you’re that precious about being a rare case and don’t trust the NHS to diagnose you, go private. What do you want us to say?
