Anyone got a Scout or Explorer going to WSJ in South Korea?

Just thought I'd start a thread for parents if there are any on here.
My 17yo DD is going as an Explorer and is getting excited now.
Anyone else?

Gosh this all sounds so awful. Those poor children.

What I don't understand and find a little sinister is why are they banning people talking about it?

Willmafrockfit · 04/08/2023 18:28

that is interesting @BiddyPop

CheersToMe · 04/08/2023 18:34

Apologies if I've misunderstood @Rewis but are you suggesting that conditions are being exaggerated because you haven't heard about it before today?

If you have someone at the site, trust me, you would have known about this for several days. I've been well aware since last Friday when the UK IST arrived

Re the journalist on twitter being suspended. Someone has posted the following:

Raphael Rashid @koryodynasty, a journalist many of you follow and rely on for his coverage of Korea, has been suspended on this platform. He says he has been fraudulently accused of copyright infringement by an abusive stalker and X blindly accepted every claim as true.

Have now heard from someone that for those kids with allergies, coeliac etc it has been a nightmare with no labelling/info etc. That's nothing to do with the weather.............

Well even our UK scout leaders couldnt sort allergies properly so that doesn't surprise me

The first group gave him something with milk in despite me saying only give him food I had packed.
He had to use his EpiPen and go to hospital.

The group we moved him to then thought it would be fun to do an activity involving throwing eggs (he is anaphylactic to egg) and when I complained they said he needed to be "more resilient"

RoyalImpatience · 04/08/2023 18:41

@BlossomCloud that's astounding in this day and age. Absolutely astounding.

Yep.

And the scout association policies themselves read really well- so on paper at least the knowledge is there. And I did such detailed handover and notes. I havent had any issue with any other activities my children do.

What a shame for the young participants, and what a stressful time for all the leaders trying to keep their young folks safe and well. I'm sure they're all doing a brilliant job.

RoyalImpatience · 04/08/2023 18:45

Unfortunately, and I've sewn thud first hand, it's a lack other training and / or perosnal interpretation of data.

I hope you went crazy blossom because as you know it could save a life

Yep. I laid down the law (I am a lawyer) but ultimately I pulled my son out. I offered to train them (I ran a really successful session at my children's school) but apparently "they are sick of being told to go to training".

A bunch of arrogant men run the local troops I guess. Such a shame. I and all my siblings grew up loving being part of scouting.

RoyalImpatience · 04/08/2023 18:54

BTW i dont sew thuds... But it's dis are thus sort it causal attitude first hand.
Where people don't believe or understand very important information... I find that attitude absolutely shocking...

lazylittlelucy · 04/08/2023 18:54

We have had an email from our district stating : "we have made available to the units funds which will ensure they have the experience of a lifetime they have been working so hard to achieve"

So ultimately who will foot the bill for all this? Can you imagine the litigation that will follow 😱

It sounds like total chaos. And while some elements (eg the heat ) may have been harder to anticipate, surely with that number of children going they would have sent people out ahead to check there were no major issues? (Eg. Swamps/rotten food/no allergy information)

DH has just been talking about this. Who has paid for the hotel for starters? He thinks Scouts don't have the funds. If they don't then the only option they would have would be to sell a camp site.

But yes, I imagine litigation.

The US have pulled out too. They are about the same size as the UK Contingent, so that's about 20% of the people being pulled now.

I applied and didn't get a place (it was a ballot for IST, and weighted for young people who'd not been before), and I was a bit gutted. Now I'm quite glad I'm here.

PuttingDownRoots · 04/08/2023 19:07

I'm actually wondering if the UK (and US!) Scouts have been asked to withdraw as they are relatively rich. They already pay for poorer countries to attend the World jamboree...

Aww well done scout leaders both in South Korea and at home for trying so hard. I bet they didn't expect all this hassle when they volunteered.

And the scouts themselves, I hope they enjoy the rest of their trip.

I can't find anything about the US pulling out online. Do you have a link? (would like to share it with family)

I'd imagine it's more that they have the logistics, experience, connections and resources behind them to make that decision more easily than smaller contingents. Plus it's more visible because of their size and nationality (would the BBC have reported it as breaking news if it hadn't been the UK scouts withdrawing?).

I think it will genuinely alleviate pressure on the site which will lead to better outcomes for the smaller contingents who don't have the same power at their disposal to exit so easily.

It's such a shame for everyone there though.

SoShallINever · 04/08/2023 19:29

Awful that the chief commissioner has asked parents not to contact their children or the media. 😡.
It is easy to point the finger at Korea and of course they are culpable, but surely the UK Scout association should have completed thorough risk assessments and made contingency plans for all scenarios?

lazylittlelucy · 04/08/2023 19:30

Yes @SoShallINever and the other international contingents also

I agree. And should have had an advance party out checking the arrangements.

And I find it grotesque they are trying to prevent children speaking to their parents /the media. If they were happy with how they were handling it they wouldn't be worried about stopping these discussions

CheersToMe · 04/08/2023 19:34

The UK Contingent are not trying to prevent young people from contacting their parents!!

They asked parents to hold off whilst the leaders spoke to their units on site. So they remained in control of the situation.

Please stop spreading misinformation.
