Old black and white films?

Anyone remember there used to be an old black and white film on bbc2 or channel 4 in the 80's/90's billed as the matinee and would be on at about 3pm on a weekday??
I used to love watching them with my mum who'd sit down with a cuppa. It's where I discovered Bette Davis, Clarke Gable, Spencer Tracey, Katherine Hepburn and all the greats.

I would love to find these on television again to watch with my own kids. I recently recorded the Ghost and Mrs. Muir which I vividly remembered from my own childhood. They loved it. Anyone know where to find these classic movies these days? We have TCM and Film 4 but they don't often show the type of film I'm interested in. I prefer a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers classic, not an old western from the 50's....

The Talking Pictures channel on Freeview (channel 82) shows all the old films and a few serials, plus some interesting clips from many years ago. Worth having a look!

They've got quite a few on bbc iplayer at the moment,, but Talking Pictures is good (we cant get that now we have sky streaming, its a nuisance, I love that channel)

Saturdays at 3pm were some of the happiest times of my childhood which was in reality rather difficult. We’d be at my grans who didn’t keep well and once we’d done her shopping and any household jobs needing done we’d all sit down together and watch the Saturday film. I think it was on BBC but I can’t be sure as I’m going back 50 years ago. To this day I love Black and White films.

BBC iplayer has lots but you either need to know what they are called or being willing to search a long list.

There are a few Fred Astaire films on BBC iPlayer at the moment.
Top Hat
The Gay Divorce
The Sky's the Limit and a couple of others. Think they're on for a while.

iPlayer has a lot.

Sunset boulevard is of course the best film! Or brief encounter.

There’s a Marlon Brando film on 5 action right now. And yesterday I watched the Dam Busters on the same channel in black and white. There are some lovely films on it.

God yes - 'Now Voyager' and 'Mr Skeffington' - both Bette Davis films and amazing.
Also 'Random Harvest' 'Mildred Pierce' and 'Kings Row' - I'm going to wait for a free rainy Sunday and watch all these again!

I LOVE old black and white films. The Apartment with Jack Lemmon and Shirley McClaine is my favourite. It was on TV in the last year or so, can't remember which channel x

I love Casablanca and quite a few other b/w films.

yumyum33 · 16/07/2023 18:14

Last night I watched an old Bette Davis film Now Voyager and I was totally engrossed. Didn't pick up my phone once. Melodramatic, intense and so absorbing. I'm going to try and seek out more now.

Lots free on YouTube! My friend watches them with her mum quite often.

I watched Gaslight recently because I wanted to know where the term gaslighting was from. Great film.

notacooldad · 16/07/2023 18:31

I watch them through the tv on YouTube.

OhDoh · 16/07/2023 18:32

Brief encounter is still my fav b&w film. The old Blithe spirit (not b&w) is also up there!

Squeaky2023 · 16/07/2023 18:35

You must watch "The Snorkle". I watched this with some friends after we had been out afternoon drinking and we had such a laugh doing our own commentary. It is a good film.

Yes, Talking Pictures is what you need. Think they're channel 81 on Freeview.

mogtheexcellent · 16/07/2023 18:38

I love the old cary grant comedies. DD9 adored bringing up baby recently. She thought it was hilarious. See also monkey business and arsenic and old lace. also the ginger rogers comedies Vivacious Lady and Batchelor mother are brilliant. Vivacious Lady is on iplayer and has been for about 4 years.

And yes I remember the matinees. They used to do seasons and i remember watching every single betty grable film. Have loved classical music since watching brief encounter at age 8.

CountFoscoHasMiceInHisPocket · 16/07/2023 18:38

I love early Hitchcock B&Ws like Rebecca or The Lady Vanishes. Anything with Margaret Lockwood being a ruthless vamp. Anything with Bette Davis, or Gene Tierney.

Jongleterre · 16/07/2023 18:39

YouTube is full of them.

PollyThePixie · 16/07/2023 18:40

The Scarlet Pimpernell is my favourite black and white film of all time.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 16/07/2023 18:42

Wuthering Heights is my favourite (Laurence Olivier) - I love a rainy afternoon in front of that

Mandy. It's about a young deaf girl.
If you don't shed a tear watching this your heart must be a stone.
