Old black and white films?

Anyone remember there used to be an old black and white film on bbc2 or channel 4 in the 80's/90's billed as the matinee and would be on at about 3pm on a weekday??
I used to love watching them with my mum who'd sit down with a cuppa. It's where I discovered Bette Davis, Clarke Gable, Spencer Tracey, Katherine Hepburn and all the greats.

I would love to find these on television again to watch with my own kids. I recently recorded the Ghost and Mrs. Muir which I vividly remembered from my own childhood. They loved it. Anyone know where to find these classic movies these days? We have TCM and Film 4 but they don't often show the type of film I'm interested in. I prefer a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers classic, not an old western from the 50's....

I love the bishops wife, much better than its a wonderful life imo

Totally agree, a fabulous feel good film.

Gene Tierney was one of the most beautiful women there's ever been

Agree, Jean Simmons was absolutely stunning as well.

Footsteps in the fog is a brilliant film.

iPlayer has a lot.

Sunset boulevard is of course the best film! Or brief encounter.

You forgot 'Double Indemnity.'

And the thriller starring Theresa Wright and
Joseph Cotton where her uncle turns out to be a serial killer. Was it called Notorious?

But you are so right. These black and whites were marvellous films. I maintain it was brilliant scripts which made them great. Like 'Casablanca''.

Not black and white but.... the incredible 'Imitation of Life' - superb melodrama and a heartbreaking ending.

I watch this every so often. Good old Annie!

Laura, The Women, Mr Blanding Build His Dream House.
(And for Christmas) The Bishops Wife (Cary Grant at his stunning best)

The Bishop's Wife is amazing.

Also Christmas in Connecticut and Remember the Night, both set at Christmas time.

Some great suggestions here

Suddenly with Joan Crawford? Not sure if that is the name, great twist at the end
Seance on a wet afternoon, again, not sure of the name but Richard Attenborough is in that one
As other have said the Ealing comedies, also most post war British films
Whatever happened to Baby Jane, outstanding
