Argos returns

I bought an iPad from Argos in may, it will no longer charge (yes I’ve obviously tried numerous different chargers) I’ve tried cleaning the port but it still won’t charge. I called Argos who wouldn’t help and said I needed to contact the manufacturer but the nearest apple store to me is well over an hour away. I’ve spoken to a few people and they’ve told me my contract is with Argos not with the manufacturer as it’s only 2 months old. Does anyone know where I stand or who should be helping?

I don't know but you can post to Apple, they will send you out a prepaid box.

MaxwellCat · 15/07/2023 16:54

I’ve checked and that’s 6-10 days when I it’s my daughters who is autistic and she will struggle without it for that long. People have told me Argos is fobbing me off.

Apple usually has authorised service centres which tend to be everywhere. I'd contact Apple and check where your closest is

MaxwellCat · 15/07/2023 19:39

I’m more trying to work out if Argos are fobbing me off as I’m really not near to any they will all be difficult to get to

I would think your contract is with Argos so they should be doing more, I think.

Hawkins0001 · 15/07/2023 19:41

If one store does not want to exchange try another store as sometimes other stores are more lax

Hawkins0001 · 15/07/2023 19:42

When helping to exchange items

Daphnis156 · 15/07/2023 20:31

The few times I've taken things back to Argos they have taken full responsibility- I believe your contract is with them, it is them you paid, I assume.

MaxwellCat · 15/07/2023 20:33

I called them. I think I will try going there instead probably get better results

I work for argos. Your first instance will be to contact apple.
Have a look at the bottom of your receipt. Manufacturers don't want us to replace products. If not you can ask your local store to send it off for repair. We can do it from store. Then it can checked over and repaired if it's a manufacturer fault u won't need to pay.

Bremusa · 15/07/2023 20:42

How did you pay for it? I had a battle with them over a switch that refused to play games when it was a couple of months old. Argos refused to take responsibility, and will just tell you to contact the manufacturer, but it absolutely is Argos that's responsible. Unfortunately I paid through Paypal and I did get a full refund but it took six months. If you paid on a credit card you will find that easier.

Debit card but I did a charge back once and my bank sided with the company so don’t really want to go down that route if I can avoid it

https://www.argos.co.uk/help/returns-and-refunds/

This says you can return through a store if its faulty so I'd do that. Your contract is with Argos not Apple

Cadburyscreamegg · 15/07/2023 20:49

Problem with charging ports etc it might be classed as accident damage , we are not trained technical staff in store so it probably wouldn't just be replaced.
Apple Is one of the companies that we don't replace for on a whim . It would need to go away to be assessed as it's over 30 days.

dementedpixie · 15/07/2023 20:52

From moneysavingexpert.com:

When returning items, beware shops trying the oldest trick in the book: saying they're not responsible for the shoddy goods and you must call the manufacturer. This is total nonsense!
If a company fobs you off by saying "go to the maker instead", it's wrong. It's the retailer's job to sort it.

It doesn't matter if it's an iPad from a high street shop or a designer frock from a department store. If something's broken, torn, ripped or faulty, the seller has a legal duty to put it right as your contract is with it.

Cadburyscreamegg · 15/07/2023 20:52

If you contact apple they will collect from your house I imagine or with a pre paid envelope , I doubt you would need to take it anywhere.

Cadburyscreamegg · 15/07/2023 20:54

That's all fair and offering the repair facility Is us honoring that we get it looked at by an APPLE approved repairer.

Jigslaw · 15/07/2023 20:57

As its past 30 days since purchase then yes they can facilitate the repair by sending it off to Apple for you as its under the manufacturers guarantee period still, but they won't just replace it or refund until Apple have had a look (and hopefully repaired it!).

GellerYeller · 15/07/2023 20:58

Surely this is in breach of the ‘must be functional for the intended purpose for a reasonable length of time’ consumer law? A big ticket item like this, you’d expect a much longer lifespan. I wouldn’t use Argos after they tried similar with me over my child’s main Christmas present which with no lack of care, dropping etc., just plain malfunctioned by January. They tried this ‘we want to send it away’ with us. We had only bought from them because they wanted a specific colour that was out of stock everywhere else. Battled with them for a refund and not shopped there since.

Lastusernamecantthinkofanotherone · 15/07/2023 21:00

Book an appointment at your nearest Apple Store.

they’ll sort it.

Cadburyscreamegg · 15/07/2023 21:02

Tablets are very easy to break. The port can be damaged just by leaning on the lead . Imagine if a company had to replace every tablet that this happened too ? And now with technology not including chargers and sometimes now leads , people could be buying any cheap chargers that could be creating faults.
It's not always the product that's faulty and as a retailer we ain't trained to check this ...

If it was past 30 days from purchase its not unreasonable for them to facilitate a repair via the manufacturer, I'm not sure why if you still wanted the item this would be an issue? If the manufacturer cannot repair it then you would get a refund or replacement.

AllAnusMorisette · 15/07/2023 21:12

The issue here is yes your contract is with Argos, but all they will do is send it off to Apple, and who knows how long that will take. If you contact Apple directly you will likely get this sorted a lot quicker.

I know technically Argos have to sort it, but this might be one of those times where it is easier to go to the manufacturer.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 15/07/2023 21:17

Sale of Goods Act. It's Argos who sold you a faulty item.
