I need 3 holiday reads

Hobnobswantshernameback · 15/07/2023 16:39

Off on holiday in a week or so
kids old enough to decide we are far too boring so will be a very peaceful week 😂
Thought it would be good to try the following

  1. light easy fiction
  2. one biography/autobiography
  3. one non fiction
So any recommendations for all or any of those categories would be fab TIA

Almost everyone I’ve seen is reading Colleen hoover; it ends with us.
the most recent one I’ve really enjoyed is tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow

Elly Griffiths the Brighton mysteries with Max Mephisto, light fiction series with lots of interesting social history, they start about 1950.

For non fiction, I really recommend Stolen Focus by Johann Hari - all about our addiction to phones and instant gratification and how it is changing our ability to focus. Really insightful, though scary, and fairly easy to read.

Fiction - Still Life by Sarah Winman or The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller. Both at the literary end of light fiction with lovely descriptions of holiday moods in, respectively, Florence and Cape Cod.

Non-fiction - The Five by Hallie Rubenhold, about the five women killed by Jack the Ripper. Hardly anything at all about the murders, just fascinating biographical detail about each of the women and life in Victorian London.

Riverbananacarrot · 15/07/2023 17:36

Fiction light hearted and very funny. Serena Terry The secrets of a uncool Mum.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 15/07/2023 17:37

I'll take a look at these
Thanks all

Lisa Jewell - the family upstairs and it's sequel, the family remains. Both great reads.

Batinahat · 15/07/2023 17:39

Cat Lady by Dawn O'Porter - light and funny fiction
Paris Hilton's autobiography - covers lots of serious topics as well as fun party 90s/00s stuff. Very interesting and enjoyable read.

Gateappreciation · 15/07/2023 17:45
  1. Patricia Fisher - Steve Higgs - can’t remember exact name of book, but this series us very addictive.

  2. Lady in Waiting - Lady Glenvonber, -about lady Glenconber life, friendship with royals, hardships etc,

  3. vaxxers - book written about the development of the Covid vaccine. Fascinating book. Written by the women scientists.

Nile Rogers' autobiography is brilliant - music, the New York disco scene - his history is a really interesting one.

Jane Johnson is good for easy-to-read, literate fiction.

  1. Daisy Jones and the Six - Taylor Jenkins Reid
  2. Nothing springs to mind!
  3. The Doomsday machine - Daniel Ellsberg

I loved The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo for fiction.

soupmaker · 15/07/2023 18:02

I read Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell on holiday and loved it.

Also read The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, proper froth and perfect pool/beach read.

Another vote for Nile Rogers biography Le Freak, it's brilliant. I also love a good sports biography, all time favourite is David Millar's Racing Through the Dark. Perfect read for when the Tour de France is on.

Margorie · 15/07/2023 18:06

Any Agatha Raison book, completely at odds with the TV series and very enjoyable, failing that Goodnight Mr Tom, a children's book, utterly enchanting and better than the film
Non fiction Can any mother help me, like mumsnet pre Internet
Biography Paul O Grady

Hobnobswantshernameback · 15/07/2023 18:17

Sounds like Nile Rogers needs to be a definite
