Off on holiday in a week or so
kids old enough to decide we are far too boring so will be a very peaceful week 😂
Thought it would be good to try the following

  1. light easy fiction
  2. one biography/autobiography
  3. one non fiction
So any recommendations for all or any of those categories would be fab TIA

Autobiography :

I came on to say Lessons in Chemistry for the fiction choice but others have beaten me to it.

I've just read it for my book club. I found it an absolute page turner but also plenty to think about.

cariadlet · 15/07/2023 19:47

Non-fiction: Hags by Victoria Smith or Time to Think by Hannah Barnes.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 15/07/2023 19:48

Love in the Rocks by Veronica Henry

In Order to Life by Yeonmi Park

The Fires of Vesuvius by Mary Beard. Very accessible and interesting book on Pompeii.

Fiction - Still Life by Sarah Winman or The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller. Both at the literary end of light fiction with lovely descriptions of holiday moods in, respectively, Florence and Cape Cod.

Non-fiction - The Five by Hallie Rubenhold, about the five women killed by Jack the Ripper. Hardly anything at all about the murders, just fascinating biographical detail about each of the women and life in Victorian London.

Fabulous choices

YukoandHiro · 15/07/2023 19:49

Not sure what kind of non fiction you like but if memoir is your thing then I recommend Busy Being Free by Emma Forrest

frozendaisy · 15/07/2023 20:52

Night Circus

David Attenborough life on air

Bill Bryson At Home

Baboutheocelot · 15/07/2023 20:57

Just love A Gentleman in Moscow.

Thank you, I've just ordered It Ends With Us and (a very cheap second hand copy) of The Kabul Beauty School based on this thread - get me to that Spanish sunshine!

TokyoSushi · 15/07/2023 21:09

And now I've ordered A Gentleman in Moscow, will close thread!

Light easy fiction:
The Sweet Sweet Revenge Company or anything by same author (the girl who saved the king of Sweden, Hitman Anders, 100 year old man). They're all hilarious. Also

  • lessons in Chemistry
_ we're all made if glue
  • little old lady behaving badly
  • death and croissants
IJustHadToLookHavingReadTheBook · 15/07/2023 21:32

Can throughly recommend Wes Streeting's recent memoir: One Boy, Two Bills and a Fry Up. It's interesting, funny and inspirational.

nutmegnook · 15/07/2023 21:36

I've just finished The Trial by Rob Rinder and loved it

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/07/2023 22:25

Non-fiction...Anything by Mary Roach. She's written a wide range of books about different things. All are amusing to read and very informative. I particularly like Grunt, which is about warfare and the science behind the weaponry/medicine for injuries and clothing for uniform. But my fave is Stiff - the curious lives of human cadavers, and explores the different uses of bodies that are donated to science.

That’s so interesting! I hated this book with a passion. I saw online it has lots of food reviews though so must just be me.

I recommended Lessons in Chemistry too if you haven’t already read it.

CountFoscoHasMiceInHisPocket · 15/07/2023 22:29

I really didn't like Lessons in Chemistry. And that one seems to be the book of the moment.

NCTDN · 15/07/2023 22:35

Is lessons in chemistry an easy read?

Yes, I read it over 2 days one weekend. It’s not as good as all the hype but it is good. My friend couldn’t get passed the talking dog. That was my least favourite part but I loved the humour in it.
