Trusting gosling rescued (with photo)

I love the fact that my husband is a 'Dr Dolittle' - ALL animals just adore him, whether they are pets, farm or wild creatures.

He was angling at our local lakes today, when a 'teenage' gosling came paddling past, albeit wonkily. The gosling managed to hop onto the bank, and it was clear that his left leg was damaged. He came up to my husband, who offered him the bread of his (cheese and pickle) sandwiches, which he devoured hungrily, then seated himself companionably next to him.

Shortly afterwards, the bailiff appeared on his rounds, and commented that my husband had company; when he explained that he was injured, the bailiff whipped out his phone and rang the local wildlife rescue people, who arrived within the hour, humanely captured the bird and took him off for "antibiotics and physiotherapy". Fingers crossed that all will be well.

Such a lovely story and good to know that creatures can sense a gentle soul.

That’s a lovely story, your husband sounds great! I’m now imagining what a goose having physio looks like 😂

LMNT · 13/07/2023 19:42

Are you married to my husband? He’s forever reducing critters 😁

LMNT · 13/07/2023 19:43

*rescuing 🥴

Thanks for your replies, I just found the story a palette cleanser after the wall-to-wall depressing news of this week!

That's lovely. Smile

We were once walking our dog (on a lead) on a path on an embankment by a saltmarsh. Despite the dog, a lamb approached us, baaing - not exactly normal lamb behaviour. We looked around and saw a ewe stuck on her back. DH went and righted her, and the brave lamb bounded off to join her.

Lanneederniere · 13/07/2023 19:50

Oh that's lovely :)

Aw lovely, hope the little chap is back on the water soon 😍

Love this thread!
And breathe.

Just great to realise how many lovely people there are in the world e.g. the bailiff and the wildlife rescue people, when you feel maxxed out on cynicism after reading the news.

I once got a lift with a road train driver in Oz as a backpacker in the wild.
He was a total sweety (we stopped for a butterfly stuck on his windscreen, it was huge and beautiful.. these trucks take a MILE to stop, so that tells you what sort of chap he was with his feet like platters )...
Anyway, on the long journey we shared he told me about the bird that got stuck on his roo bars injured/winded from the impact.
He took it in his cab and expected it to die but it didn't, it was thin and had mites so he fed it and got rid of the parasites, it lived with him in his truck for a year and became a firm fave with the people at his his usual trucking stops. Went outside with him, pecked on the ground while he fuelled up etc but always returned to his shoulder and started with him.
Then after a year, when the bird was plump and glossy and fit, they were driving through where he'd originally hit the truck and bird started going mad at the window, so he let it out and it flew off...

He liked to think it then went on to have a very successful life, attracted the best mate available as it was in such good condition and had many baby chicks as it's legacy.
I saw all the photos he'd taken during this year-long rehab relationship. The fact it was a wild bird who chose to stay of it's own free will all that time was lovely.

That's a gorgeous story, it's amazing how they just know who they can trust 😍

I'm loving these stories!

podcastpal · 13/07/2023 20:13

This is cute; I'm so glad it fared better than the mumsnetter who rescued a puffin/penguin can't recall on a bus one year who didn't really need rescuing and ended in an unfortunate kidnapping by zealous animal lover I think 🤣

Yes I also have curiosities about goose physio sessions- would gladly watch them on YouTube

Soubriquet · 13/07/2023 20:18

This was me…I would come home with all sorts of random animals ranging from pigeons, to hedgehogs. Dh was also so exasperated by it all but would still help where he could.

I’ve got very low mobility now so I don’t get out anymore. I miss it

Lanneederniere · 13/07/2023 20:20

Glad to share Soubriquet, hope you have a pet to keep you company?

Soubriquet · 13/07/2023 20:24

Yeah. I have my cat laid next to me now. She rarely leaves my side when I’m having a bad day. I also have two dogs but they are downstairs with my dh. They annoy the cat Grin

Lanneederniere · 13/07/2023 20:34

Animals just know ... when I had a broken leg, my (rescue, stray) curmudgeon of a black cat licked the tears off my face and didn't leave my side 😻

Introducing Argyll the hare. His Mum succumbed to barley machinery and he has gone from tiny underweight ball of fluff to a big boy who has completely taken over my house and life and point blank refuses to go outside, he's much to regal and important to do that! He hasn't read the "I'm a hare" manual and therefore prefers instead to lie on my lap cuddling and watching tv (he prefers Death in Paradise, true crime and Alvin and the chipmunks) or digging up his box of soil (or jar of dirt as we call it) and trying to eat the wallpaper or pee on the cat if he wants to lie on my lap instead. He is also the love of my life (sorry DH).

Ah, your DH sounds lovely.

Although perhaps the fish don't share the general love :)

Introducing Argyll the hare.

Oh, that's just brilliant!

(All lovely stories, BTW)

Lanneederniere · 14/07/2023 14:12

Objectionhearsayspeculation Oh Argyll is gorgeous! Did you have to hand-rear him? I bet he adores you!

Ellmau I understand what you're saying about the fish; DH started fishing as a boy some 40 years ago, but has mainly stuck to angling. He had the chance to take part in a sea-fishing competition about 20 years ago and won the boat prize, catching a large and beautiful skate. Once he brought it at home, however, he rued taking its life and vowed to only go angling thereafter, which I fully understood and agreed with.

I keep geese, they’re lovely friendly birds, real characters. And brilliant lawn mowers.

RedLem0nade · 14/07/2023 15:52

Aw. He sounds like my DP too. Came across a damaged nest of mice- only one survivor (mum died too😔). She had fur but her eyes were still closed.

So in she came to our house and DP rummaged around and found a tiny LOL doll bottle or some such from the DC and filled it with aptamil and we started night feeds!

We got input from an animal rescue and hand raised the little mite then eventually did a gradual release into our greenhouse.

She was ADORABLE!
