Trusting gosling rescued (with photo)

I love the fact that my husband is a 'Dr Dolittle' - ALL animals just adore him, whether they are pets, farm or wild creatures.

He was angling at our local lakes today, when a 'teenage' gosling came paddling past, albeit wonkily. The gosling managed to hop onto the bank, and it was clear that his left leg was damaged. He came up to my husband, who offered him the bread of his (cheese and pickle) sandwiches, which he devoured hungrily, then seated himself companionably next to him.

Shortly afterwards, the bailiff appeared on his rounds, and commented that my husband had company; when he explained that he was injured, the bailiff whipped out his phone and rang the local wildlife rescue people, who arrived within the hour, humanely captured the bird and took him off for "antibiotics and physiotherapy". Fingers crossed that all will be well.

Such a lovely story and good to know that creatures can sense a gentle soul.

There should be at least one thread like this per day as a rule. To break up all the ones that make you sad or want to tear your hair out. There’s one about Bluey at the moment and it’s so wholesome. These stories are lovely

I want an Argyl!

The cats might not, especially wrt the peeing on them! 😆

Wonderful thread. The only thing I can contribute is our recovery suite. This is a cardboard box with air holes, water, bird food and greenery inside, in which chicks and mice can recuperate after being removed from cats who have mistaken them for a Happy Meal (food and toy in one), before being stealthily released once they've lost interest.

Oh wow!! Imagine having a pet Hare. That must be very rare

This was baby Spike (unoriginal I know). He came in with his brother who I had to have PTS because it turns out something had attacked him and ripped his innards out. How he was still alive I don’t know. Spike was hand reared and became very friendly. Following you around the room if you were in it trying to get food. However, he wilded up very quickly we moved him to an outdoor enclosure. Within a week, he balled up whenever he saw a human. This is what we wanted. When he started to do that, we opened up the outdoor enclosure and let him go when he wanted to. We carried on putting food in there in case he needed it, but nope. He was gone by the next morning. I did see a rather fat hedgehog a couple of months later and did wonder if it was Spike.

Thanks so much to everyone for your posts and wonderful stories, huge love for Argyll, Spike and mini-mouse 😍.

Re. DH speaking 'goose', he literally charms the birds out of the trees with his whistling, he is entirely capable of replicating the full range of their calls, which leads to frustration among them during mating season, when they are convinced that they have pulled !!!

Oh that would be amazing to see

Ellmau · 14/07/2023 17:27

That sounds amazing.

You should change your username to Mrs Doolittle, obviously :)

Wow. Just Wow! I am in awe of your mouse rescuing skills!

I've had lots of birds over the years, mostly they didn't survive. I found a vet, who knows a lady who takes them and they've passed on advice from her.

When my daughter was 3, I rescued a wood pigeon squab, with all its tail feathers ripped off, all bloody. I managed to keep it alive with oatmeal in a Calpol syringe (advice remembered) from Friday till Monday, when I passed it to the expert lady.

My daughter was going, "Aaw, ptichka bolna zhopa!" (Birdie with sore bum, in Russian) for years. My wife is a Russian speaker.

Is his name Dickon? 😂

Lanneederniere · 14/07/2023 22:56

CountingMareep I won't be getting him any pan pipes, the birds respond enthusiastically enough as it is !
