Woman, 68, suffers potentially life-changing injuries in dog attack in Worcester

"A 68-year-old woman has suffered potentially life-changing injuries in a dog attack in Worcester this morning.

Three people were injured after the incident at a house on Boughton Avenue.

The 68-year-old woman was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, while a 38-year-old man was taken to Worcester Royal Hospital, with injuries which are not life-threatening."

Two men were injured, one elderly woman was in critical condition upon entry to hospital (now stable).

Glad it was the owners, not innocent people.

Surely the government needs to step in and completely ban dogs capable of doing such damage? I feel I can't let my children walk around outside by themselves, in case one of these bloodsport breeds is out. No leash will hold them. I know I couldn't fight one off either, but at least if I was around my children and there was only one dog, they'd have a chance to escape.

They haven't released the breed, but I think we all know what type of dog it will be.

There's a second attack by dog of a nine year old boy, same day, also Worcester. Leg injuries described as serious. Poor child.

We are beyond help as a species when we allow this to happen to us.

Portefields Road, Worcester

Boy seriously injured during dog attack in Worcester

It happened on the same day as a separate dog attack in Worcester which left three adults hurt.

I wasn’t being sneery and I’m sorry if it came across that way. I said that perhaps OP’s anxiety - which seems extreme to me - is justified. I take a PPs point that if you regularly see brick-shithouse bully breeds being walked by muscle-wasted crack addicts then of course you’re not unreasonable to have that anxiety.

But still, the facts are that the vast majority of the attacks happen in people’s homes, carried out by dogs they live with, not from out of control dogs in public. That’s where I think OP’s anxiety seems extreme to me, talking about not letting her children out alone specifically because of dangerous dogs. It’s like the fear of street abduction vs the real threat to children which is unfortunately usually by someone they know.

I would support a ban - I don’t think ‘children on dreary council estates’ should be ‘torn to shreds’ any more than you do, FFS. I’m all for feckless idiot owners being banned from owning dogs they cannot socialise or control. No one should die after being attacked by a dog, especially not children.

I don't feel I have anxiety. I am just aware of the increase in these types of dogs, and the damage they do.

Nobody stands a chance against these dogs but if you do ever have to protect yourself against one the only thing to do is try to choke it out...lift with its collar. If you're a dog owner take a spare slip lead to protect your dog if it's attacked

I carry a spare lead for that reason- Hope to goodness I never have to use it.

Terrifying. I keep a very watchful eye on the park gates to see who enters, and if there’s anything looking remotely like a bully breed, I make a very swift exit.

They are weapons, being walked by the same type of person every time. How many more people have to die/suffer before we can be safe from them?

I have no problems with dogs generally. I don’t even mind a lot of behaviour that gets complained a lot about on here. I’m not suggesting that others should not mind, just that in the scheme of things if a dog jumps up at me and gets muddy marks on my coat I’m not going to get stressed about it.

But I do find the level of blasé regarding the sheer number of people who have come to the most awful end in the last two years horrible. The same things get trotted out about any breed can be dangerous and it’s the owners and anecdotes about people bitten by spaniels and Labradors, and what people want to prove I don’t know.

And as for the smug ‘well I live in a nice area, so I haven’t seen these dogs’ - great, nice stealth boast there.

I don’t for a moment think adding this breed to the list of banned breeds will work, but that isn’t because having banned breeds is ineffective, it’s because it isn’t a proactive list. Someone has a dangerous dog and it is only dangerous once someone has already been hurt.

There is so much to be done and I know a lot of it is about targeting owners, but that really isn’t the full story. I don’t mind admitting that Jack Lis’ story really moved me; I can’t imagine how his poor mum feels.

Follow - we have a new toy poodle puppy and I feel I need to educate myself on this and the different breeds / temperaments!

Yes, the easy dismissiveness from people sickens and horrifies me.
Dismissing me as over-anxious. Dismissing the deaths as not as many as men kill women or stairs kill whoever. Of course those things happen. Doesn't mean we can't, as a society, work on ways to make us safer.
So dismissive of the WAY Jack and others will have died. It's not a dog bite, it's a savage, horrific mauling. Add those who've been severely mauled, who gave lost limbs or use of limbs, facial disfigurement. How utterly terrifying. Yet I'm anxious, and everyone else is too cool to be concerned.

There is an easy solution, we just need a government with the will to do it.

You are so right OP. The terror these children suffered. It's an unbearable thought and heartless of people to be dismissive. I'm phobic of these dogs & it's getting a lot worse. In America it's way way worse & we are heading the same way. As someone else commented just search X L bully on pets4homes.

Any of these breeds in rescue should absolutely not be rehomed for starters.

It's not phobic to be concerned about these breeds. It is perfectly rational and reasonable. It's the other side who are blatantly wrong to be so nonchalant about the damage these dogs can cause, and regularly do so.

It's so bad in the US, I can't imagine living there with the sheer volume of deaths and maulings from these creatures. Poor kids. Death toll is very high already this year.

@NoSquirrels

Same here.my main gripe is untrained cockerpoos jumping up with muddy paws when I'm wearing decent clothes on the cut through to the main bus stop!

I have grumpy older dog who likes to be left alone when he's staying with me which can also be challenging but due to surgeries he doesn't go offlead now, he'd mostly hang out in the pub by choice Grin

You see staffies occasionally but they are generally with holidaymakers, not seen anything bigger

Where does he stay when not staying with you? Is this a we split joint custody of the dog thing?
