I have and always will support the strikes but have a couple of questions since the announcement that the government will accept the recommendations re pay rises but will not increase funding.

Will you still strike in light of the fact the pay rises are not being funded?

What sort of impact is this going to have in schools do you think?

Will result in redundancies if not funded

tallcypowder · 13/07/2023 12:59

If funded I likely wouldn't strike.

However it's literally the same as the last offer. Actually in short term its worse.

kirinm · 13/07/2023 13:02

I hope the unions don't accept an unfunded offer. I dread to think what schools will look like if they do. We have two teachers leaving this term and some classes in our (primary) school have only had supply teachers for the entire year.

Sounds like the unions are going to recommend it is accepted.

Not funded? Oh dear.

BarbieBunches · 13/07/2023 13:05

Was talking to a school governor this morning who has just had to shut her school as it’s been condemned.

Thats the reality of state education now.

This government is a fucking disgrace.

Dominey · 13/07/2023 13:06

The BBC is reporting that it’s funded?

orangeleavesinautumn · 13/07/2023 13:07

yes, I will strike if the pay award is unfunded. Where is the money supposed to come from? We have windows we can't open because builders have warned us the walls they are built into are too old to withstand the changed is pressure of windows being opened and closed.....

Dominey · 13/07/2023 13:06

The BBC is reporting that it’s funded?

It was but it's changed!

I read it 10 mins or so ago as funded now gone back to check and it's been reworded

Hereinthismoment · 13/07/2023 13:07

BBC says fully funded

kirinm · 13/07/2023 13:09

It is meant to be 'funded' by increasing costs for visas - so when will the money actually be allocated to schools? And the money that raises will also have to be shared by the NHS.

Can't see how anyone would trust the government on this 'promise'. No extra money but a promise to one day give extra money when we've got it from migrants.

BBC says fully funded

No it doesn't.

It says

He said the rises would not be funded by borrowing more or increasing taxes.

Then

Asked where the money would come from to fund other pay awards, Mr Sunak said he would be asking government departments to re-prioritise their focus on pay.

GloomySkies · 13/07/2023 13:16

Those Tories are slimy fucking pricks and they know they have the teachers over a barrel with this. Most people won't look at it too closely, if the teachers accept it without extra funding the schools are fucked for money and will have to make drastic cuts so the teachers will be pilloried, if they reject it people won't understand why and the teachers will look like lazy greedy sods and be pilloried. It makes me so angry.

From Kevin Courtney:

Crinklycut · 13/07/2023 13:24

The NAHT and ASCL members need to lead us on this.

Teachers were striking over pay (members were losing pay to strike - it can’t be that they were losing pay to strike over the funding of schools, even if that was a motive in reality; that wasn’t their battle—that was a battle for school leadership).

Heads need to show leadership on this. Can you run a school with this version of funding?

kirinm · 13/07/2023 13:26

So they've gone from won't talk to the unions to fully funded pay rises? Sure.

OP posts:
kirinm · 13/07/2023 13:28

Under that thread people are suggesting the £900m per annum is only enough to fund 3% of the pay rise.

OP posts:
kirinm · 13/07/2023 15:00

It's not properly funded. If the doctors can see that, why can't the teaching unions?

OP posts:
Giraffesanddance · 13/07/2023 15:03

I just posted on another thread as if it is just 3% ( via reprioritisation) and the other 3.5% is out of existing school budget then the joint statement with the unions is really misleading. You cannot describe that as adequately funded and the union statement is misleading - certainly to the general public

The only thing I didn’t know if this was somehow on top of existing additional funding for pay rise that had already been promised which could mean the 6.5% could be fully funded in the sense of individual school budgets?

Where DfE is to find this thought is an interesting question.

Giraffesanddance · 13/07/2023 15:04

If it isn’t fully funded then this is a pretty terrible deal for children.

kirinm · 13/07/2023 15:11

I hope teachers don't accept this. I supported the strikes and still would if they reject it. In fact, I will be angry if it is accepted.

This government are absolute scum.
