For a very brief period of time and now he can't stop banging on about it.

Maybe he doth protest too much ?
Mud sticks. Even though HE has now been named as the BBC presenter in this case, there will be loads of people thinking "Hmm, so it wasn't JV this time, but there's no smoke without fire, is there?"
For all his faults and annoyances, I really like Jeremy as a presenter - on the telly and the radio. There is absolutely nothing whatsoever to suggest that he's guilty of any kind of impropriety of the kind that this case is about - no more than any other man in the country (famous or not) could/could not be.
Whether he goes ahead and actually does sue, I don't blame him one little bit for repeatedly protesting his innocence and threatening to sue. As we've (almost certainly) seen with HE, it's not even 'just' his personal reputation at stake, but his very successful, very well-paid career and family's livelihood too. Why would he want to run any risk whatsoever of losing any of that just as a result of groundless vicious rumour?
