What would you love to find in the fridge after a long day of travel?

DP and DSS flying back from Norway at the moment, due to arrive home around 7pm tonight. They've already had a delay and have a long stop in Madrid en route (we don't live in the UK, so Madrid is en route for us!).

I'm going to be out, so want to leave them something tasty and comforting in the fridge to re-heat.

Oven currently out of action, so stovetop only.

Having a massive imagination failure this morning thanks to being up all last night with a sick dog.

What's your favourite make-ahead dinner that you'd be thrilled to find in a Tupperware arriving home after a long day of travel?

@Kimchikitchen yes, I do know what their favourite meals are.

But those meals aren't things I can make without an oven and leave in the fridge to re-heat, so I'm asking for inspiration for other things, as well as enjoying the chit-chat of the lovely posters here on the thread.

Thanks for your question, though – it wouldn't be Mumsnet without one of those.

Curry, microwave rice, poppadoms and a bottle of wine would make my day.

But if you give an idea of what they actually like - you’d get more relevant response. I read some of these and think - I wouldn’t like some stodgy and heavy at all hence my suggestion. 🤷‍♀️

So what is their favourite? As that could given ideas for similar that can be done on the stove

I'd do a mild chilli con carne and lots of toppings to help themselves to.
Made myself crave that now!

SchoolShenanigans · 12/07/2023 10:55

Macaroni cheese with a fresh salad 🤤

Hoppinggreen · 12/07/2023 10:57

Whenever we go away in Europe I miss a good curry so it would be a nice home made butter chicken for me or possibly sag paneer

Spirallingdownwards · 12/07/2023 11:00

After travelling back long haul a friend who had housesat for us left us a cooked roast chicken, potato salad and a salad and strawberries and cream and milk in the fridge.

It meant we had a full non cook meal which required little effort. Frankly we would have been happy with just the milk for a cuppa so the rest was a very welcomed bonus.

Florissante · 12/07/2023 11:12

Roast chicken is an excellent idea.

WhatWouldStevieNicksDo · 12/07/2023 11:13

Ooh, @Spirallingdownwards your friend sounds like an absolute dreamboat!

Apologies to everyone who's getting hunger pangs from this thread – I am very much enjoying imagining you all saying your suggestions in an M&S "this is not just a cucumber" voice, though😂

AND I'm getting ideas for future dinners I wouldn't have thought of, too! Bonus!

Do tell us what you actually made and how it went down.

coxesorangepippin · 13/07/2023 01:53

A quiche and an apple crumble

ManyDogs · 13/07/2023 01:58

A pasta dish with prawns/ meatballs and garlic bread

Theoldwoman · 13/07/2023 02:15

Not a make ahead dinner as such but the components to make hot dogs would be great! Buns, sausages, onions and sauces. That’s provided you have a microwave.

Kinsters · 13/07/2023 02:18

I would leave fried rice and a plate of cut fruit plus an alcohol free beer as those are things DH likes. Fried rice reheats well in the microwave or on the stove.

elliejjtiny · 13/07/2023 02:27

Lentil and bacon soup with fresh crusty bread. Mango sounds nice too.
