What would you love to find in the fridge after a long day of travel?

DP and DSS flying back from Norway at the moment, due to arrive home around 7pm tonight. They've already had a delay and have a long stop in Madrid en route (we don't live in the UK, so Madrid is en route for us!).

I'm going to be out, so want to leave them something tasty and comforting in the fridge to re-heat.

Oven currently out of action, so stovetop only.

Having a massive imagination failure this morning thanks to being up all last night with a sick dog.

What's your favourite make-ahead dinner that you'd be thrilled to find in a Tupperware arriving home after a long day of travel?

A good old spag bol 😋

Raindropbattle · 12/07/2023 08:46

Lasagne or curry Smile

Sgtmajormummy · 12/07/2023 08:48

A steak and lots of salad.

Magicmagician · 12/07/2023 08:50

Lasagne and some nice bread and a bag of salad (and a bar of dairy milk or similar not fancy chocolate!)

mynameiscalypso · 12/07/2023 08:52

I generally want a curry when I get back from holiday

Gateappreciation · 12/07/2023 08:52

Probably something simple after a long journey such as pizza and oven chips.

Gateappreciation · 12/07/2023 08:54

Sorry, just saw oven out of action.

spaghetti bol
macaroni cheese

or money for pizza delivery!

PurplePetalPip · 12/07/2023 08:55

Cottage pie - yum! With a cheesecake for pudding just because.

NewLeafAgain · 12/07/2023 08:55

Ah, what a lovely thing to do.
I was going to say pizza, but stovetop only, probably meatballs and fresh pasta. Precook the meatballs so they can reheat later and whole thing ready in 5 mins.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 12/07/2023 08:57

If there's no oven, a really hearty, chunky soup, with lots of bread and butter.

7Worfs · 12/07/2023 08:59

Assume they’re fed up of sandwiches and snacks, and slightly dehydrated. So:

a big fruit bowl with fresh juicy summer fruits and berries

Greek salad

Any stew or saucy casserole

snickersontoast · 12/07/2023 09:00

Lasagne, bag of lettuce, bottle of wine and cheesecake

Divebar2021 · 12/07/2023 09:01

Fresh mango.

sashh · 12/07/2023 09:27

Wine / beer for DH, soft drink for DS and a note saying Pizza / Curry / Chinese will be delivered at X time.

I don't think I would want to cook so pita breads cut in half and filled with salad, a packet of bacon to fry and a tub of crème fraiche just to finish it off. Tastes much better than it sounds.

Or a ratatouille with lots of crusty bread.

WhatWouldStevieNicksDo · 12/07/2023 09:37

Oh my goodness you're all making me hungry! 😂

There are some great ideas here – sounds like something hot and meaty/carby, AND something fresh and clean and crunchy.

@Divebar2021 mango's a LOVELY curveball idea - and DSS loves it 😍

Home made spag bol sauce, made the day before so the flavours are really developed. With fresh spaghetti that takes only a couple of minutes to boil. Salad, and some beers or wine and soft drinks properly chilled.

Kimchikitchen · 12/07/2023 09:40

Fresh fruit. Greek yoghurt. Nice cereal.

Surely you know what is your DH and DSS’s favourite meal is?? 😐

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/07/2023 09:41

A couple of ready meals from M&S or Waitrose, the ones that just need a few minutes in the microwave.
Thats what dh and I pick up on the way home after a long drive that’s getting us home late.
And some nice seasonal fruit. At the moment M&S U.K. grown cherries would hit the spot perfectly.

stressbucket1 · 12/07/2023 09:43

I always crave nice buttered toast or crumpets with a cuppa when I get back from holiday. Especially if it's a funny time.

ThreadExterminator · 12/07/2023 09:43

Chilli or bolognese

And a fruit platter, all cut up ready to eat. Flying is so dehydrating and they'll probably have eaten beige stuff en route.

cornflower21 · 12/07/2023 09:43

Lasagna, cottage pie...

Florissante · 12/07/2023 09:47

Cut up fruit, crudites, dips, salad, good bread and butter, soup and quiche (can be eaten cold).

cornflower21 · 12/07/2023 09:49

Or stew, or some sort of comforting soup.

Whichwhatnow · 12/07/2023 09:49

Personally I wouldn't want something too carby or heavy like spag bol or a stew after a day of presumably eating a lot of sandwiches and snacks. I'd go for something light and fresh like a nice green Thai chicken curry with lots of veg (mangetout, baby corn, peppers etc) and maybe a fresh Asian salad with grated carrot and cucumber and bean sprouts etc and a nice tangy lime, garlic and chilli dressing. Plus fresh fruit and nice ice cream.

And now I'm hungry!
