Trying to find a nearby location that fits the following requirements

  • at least 30 minutes out of town ideally south of Edinburgh or up to around an hour
  • Easily accessible by train from London and Edinburgh
  • trains or public transport go there until 11pm ish Sunday nights

this is for the Taylor Swift concert! Looking at prices in the city we need to be at least half an hour out for a cheap enough stay.

I’ve looked at big places like Berwick on tweed as far enough away to be cheap but the Sunday trains back the latest seems to be 9pm which is too early.
ideally South as if we end up driving if train proves too expensive or strikes etc then we don’t add to our journey.

any suggestions much appreciated!

What time does the show finish? The problem you'll have on the Sunday is that the last trains tend to be earlier than other days. Many are before 11pm. It's about a 20min walk to Haymarket station and 45mins to Waverley and both will be rammed. There are buses and trams which make it quicker but you will be competing with 60,000 other people all leaving simultaneously.

There aren't really many places south of Edinburgh. Have you looked at somewhere like Falkirk? It has an 11.30pm train and plenty of hotels but I have no idea if prices will be affected by this concert or not. If you drive I would look at prices in Livingstone, Falkirk or even Dunfermline. All are in the wrong direction but you may have a better chance of finding accommodation.

The last train out of Edinburgh to Bathgate and Livingston is 11:22pm. Uphall is also on this line.

You'd be able to leave murryfield and get the train from haymarket or Edinburgh park (if you took the tram)

But public transport will be rammed either way.

To be honest scotrail will probably put on extra trains but that won't be announced till nearer the time.

tabulahrasa · 12/07/2023 08:16

Glasgow or Stirling are a bit further away, but trains run till after 11.30ish

I live on that line, I’m not banking on making the last train tbh, it’ll take way longer than usual to get to haymarket.

I would leave the car at Ingliston Park and Ride (near airport) and get the tram in from there. Easy to get back to afterwards, and then you can drive where ever suits you stay.
Trams back to the P&R are quick and cheap, and will definitely run that late.
Haymarket and Waverley will be packed.

HUGanALPACA · 12/07/2023 08:24

U can still book the kildonnan lodge for under £200. It takes about an honour and 15 minutes to walk from Murrayfield. I’d be tempted to do this and avoid the faff of trains etc. it’s on a good bus route for the station the next day.

It was full and turning people away by about 3pn when Harry styles was at Murrayfield.

Easily accessible by train from London and Edinburgh

Everywhere on the east coast main line then. Confused

Thank you this is helpful! It doesn’t have t be south I guess, just train accessible. The main line from Edinburgh to London looks like trains don’t run late enough on Sundays so was thinking a branch line I suppose.

Annoyingly I don’t know what time the sow finishes. The advertised start time is 4.30pm and I know from the US it’s a 3 hour show. But not sure if 4.30pm will be Taylor’s start time. I’ve just assumed we will need a late train around 11pm.

This might work as we do want to go super early

4.30 isn’t when she stays, no, 4.30 is when the doors open, my ticket says 7.15, but I don’t know if that means her or openers - she’s been coming on at 8 in America.

Thanks so much for this suggestion! We want to come up the Saturday by train tho to make a weekend of it and in case
of train delays on the Sunday and it’s fully booked for Saturday night

What date is the concert?

Sunday 9 July, hoping to find affordable accomm from 8-10 July, 2 nights as travelling from London. Prices for the Saturday night are crazy!
would have been so much simpler if we had manged to get london tickets!

The recent concerts have finished around 10:30pm due to council noise restrictions BUT it can take a while to get out of the stadium when it's full, particularly if your seats are round the far side to where you want to be heading. I think you'd be lucky to catch a train from Haymarket at 11pm unless you left before it finishes.
Edinburgh has a very good bus service which runs further afield than you might think www.lothianbuses.com or the citylink buses often run later than the trains.

Sorry ignore this! Sunday 9 June 2024. Not July!

Do you mean 9th June not July??

Coronationstation · 12/07/2023 09:32

I would seriously consider staying in Glasgow - there's a Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn express "Theatreland" and Premier Inn Buchanan Galleries which are all a stones throw from the bus station if you ended up using the citylink and also Queen Street station for the train. They're all about £250 for 2 nights 8-10 June. Even with the cost of transport to/from Edinburgh that's about £800 cheaper than anything in Edinburgh!

YouAndMeAndThem · 12/07/2023 09:42

After Harry Styles, we waited 2.5 hours for a bus back to Dalkeith! The train stations were absolutely hoaching! Although there will be later trains back to fife, and Glasgow from Wav and Haym but these don't get announced, it's just ScotRail's way to get everyone at the station for the last trains rather than dawdling back for the specials and missing them due to how many people are waiting!

Margarita45 · 12/07/2023 09:46

There’s a number of flats on Air bnb all under £300 near city centre….

BrainFrazzled · 12/07/2023 09:47

Get there early, picnic in the park right next to the stadium.
Though that only works if it isn't torrential rain that day 😎.

FionnulaTheCooler · 12/07/2023 09:51

There are a couple of private bus companies that usually put on coach transport back to Fife for big concerts like that. We've used A1 coaches and the Happy Bus before. They will pick you up at the end of the concert and drop off in towns like Glenrothes, Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy. Kirkcaldy train station is on the east coast main line and you can get a train directly to London from there.
