Sick of flashers. Sick of people minimising flashers.

Just that really. This will sound unbelievable but I can assure you it’s absolutely true.

Last week a man exposed himself to me whilst I was walking my dog in the park. The following day, a drunk man came up to the floor to ceiling window of a venue where I was having a meeting, looked right at me in an intimidating way and started wanking. The week before a man with learning difficulties who lives in supported accommodation in a house in my road exposed himself to myself and also to a neighbour twice. The previous man who lived there did the same thing repeatedly, the carers don’t safeguard their residents at all.
Today, I took a group of 12 year olds to a museum (I’m a teacher) and as we left a man called put to the children and then dropped his trousers. (Luckily he was the other side of a busy road, not all the children noticed and all are ok).

Two of the adults that I had to inform about this at school, and one of my friends said “Oh, what is it about you Audacia, ha ha ha”. It’s not funny. I don’t want to walk my dog on my own any more. The man with LD sometimes escapes from his accommodation, or he’s always pressed up against the window every time I go out. I know he can’t help it but I don’t feel safe and I’m sick of this.

I've only been flashed at once since moving back up north but I had an average of three a year when I lived in London. Day time, night time, public transport, parks, a theatre, and a swimming pool. Creeps.

Disgusting

x2boys · 12/07/2023 16:21

Gosh that's slot in a few weeks
I.have seen one in my nearly fifty years
A saw a guy wanking in the bushes a few.Years sgo.

Lengokengo · 12/07/2023 16:32

I’ve ben flashed art in my teens, 20s, 30s and 40’s. Now in my 50s and hope that’s an end to it. Always happened when I was with another woman/ girl, so fortunately never alone.

Most recent one was in a dementia care home on a ‘volunteering day’ I had been roped into. I was locked in the set of rooms with him so couldn’t escape. Others were in the street/ public places.

Absolutely awful.

I’m sorry that’s happened to you, I’m in my 50s and I’d also been hoping that I wouldn’t have to deal with this any more. The people saying that they’ve never been flashed, I’m glad you’ve been safe, but I’m not sure what you want me say?

No. How about we don't give them attention,

This is why I carry Mace.

I had a teen ask me the time, went off on his bike but then cycled back towards me wanking. The police dispatcher did say they sent car out to look for him but with multiple exits from the park, unsurprisingly he wasn't spotted. A female officer did phone me after too but it was fairly light hearted. I found it worrying that someone so young is already seeking thrills in such a disturbing way.

At the time although shocked i didn't feel physically at risk from him but for some months afterwards I felt more anxious and unsafe out walking alone, I think more because I'd use logic to reassure myself that something bad is very unlikely to happen and yet this did happen in a public place, in the middle of the day.

Rightsraptor · 13/07/2023 04:27

I read recently about a young boy who'd been arrested for indecent exposure, after having exposed himself an 'older woman' although at his age, almost anyone was an older woman.

Anyway, it turned out that he'd expected this 'older woman' to then perform what was described as a "sex act" upon him.

Clearly he'd been heavily influenced by porn. If that's right, we can only expect this behaviour to get worse, sad to say

Take it you're not uk. It's 6mth for possession and 7prison if used.

LlynTegid · 13/07/2023 06:54

Involve the police each time.

TreesandFish · 13/07/2023 07:13

I was flashed several times as a teenager, well before the Internet and widespread porn, so I'm not sure if those can be a reason.

However last time I was flashed was in London Bridge station, at about 8:50 in the morning, with about 1/2 million commuters around. I must admit my reaction was laughing and kept walking. I should have reported it

ManAboutTown · 13/07/2023 07:31

The police need to stop spending time recording non-crime hate incidents and following up hurty words and crack down on this sort of nonsense that frightens women and girls. I don't have daughters but I do have nieces and many female friends and colleagues and would want any of them to be on the receiving end of this.

Women can help by reporting this to the police every time it happens. I strongly suspect that for a lot of the perpetrators it's not a one off incident and if Plod receive a lot of complaints in one area its hard for them to ignore

Open up Bedlam and other Victorian asylums and lob them in there - these weirdoes should not be on the streets

littleripper · 13/07/2023 07:36

Stop calling it 'flashing'. A lot of people think it is funny and cheeky - like a bare bum quickly shown. Call it "A man masturbating and staring at me in a an intimidating way". A LOT of men do not understand this crime including Police.

Oldnamechangeyetagain · 13/07/2023 07:36

Now it's interesting you should say that.🤔

When it became policy to remove people from such institutions and place them into the community some people were concerned about the safety issue. They were dismissed as being prejudiced against those with mental handicaps/challenging behaviour.

Theos · 13/07/2023 07:37

You seem to have remarkable bad luck Op last time I saw a flasher was 20 years ago

Theos · 13/07/2023 07:39

Oh no. Forgot. Bloke went onto the pitch at bath rugby and showed us his arsehole. H complained. The stewards were like Wut

So I complained in writing

No, being humiliated is part of the fetish for some of them.

Chocolatecoveredshitpig · 13/07/2023 08:04

It hasn't happened to me, but other women have been flashed in our local woods while walking their dogs. Police useless. I carry a dog attack repellent spray, (perfectly legal and made of citronella. Stings like mad and temporarily blinds), and would have no hesitation to use it if I felt in immediate danger.
I'd be interested to know what the stats are regarding flashing in countries where you can carry pepper spray or even a gun - I may attempt to look that up later.

Chocolatecoveredshitpig · 13/07/2023 08:06

Just to clarify, I have no desire to live somewhere where you can walk around with a gun in your bag, but I'd be interested to know if it does deter flashing.

SinnerBoy · 13/07/2023 09:01

LlynTegid · Today 06:54

Involve the police each time.

That's what I told my wife, but she was worried and reluctant. It was sort of a relief to find other victims, because none of them had thought it worth bothering with, but together, they supported one another.

It definitely needs to be dealt with more harshly in the courts; as others have said, it's often a gateway thing, where they work their nerve up to do increasingly worse things.

Why didn't you say anything to him? And her other people to join in and restrain him?

msmonstera · 14/07/2023 19:20

I was flashed at on my way to work very early one morning. The man had weird trousers almost like a onesie with a flap at the crotch so he was clearly doing it on purpose for a fetish. Police did nothing. My then (male) flat mate walked me to the train after that. Flashed at in a posh area of Marbellla and people just laughed. I now live very near a city centre and you also get men weeing everywhere, not even discreetly. As there are so many bars you could go into to use the loo and wouldn't even be noticed, I'm convinced this is deliberate exposure. There can't be that many of them who have urge incontinence. There was also a man in gym class with flappy shorts and nothing else who seemed to enjoy that people could see up them although he seems to have been removed. I really, really hate that this shit from men is just tolerated.

Startyabastard · 14/07/2023 19:31

Very horrible.... not quite the same, but I frequently have horrible, sexual comments made to me when I'm walking on the pavement by men, usually driving.
Thing is, with a flasher you don't know if their intention is to rape you.
This very much needs to be taken seriously. I how you're ok xxx
