How does the BBC get out of the presenter mess?

1000 replies

mids2019 · 11/07/2023 07:13

Seriously how does the BBC now go forward and what can be the conclusion to this story? The story could run for some time with on going speculation about the presenter and eventually in my opinion a name will drop.

Can there therefore be any sort of fair investigation because I think there may be too much aspirational damage now for a career to be as ed. It seems the knives the BBC sit on this the more scrutiny there is and they desperately need a conclusion?

Jeremey Vine has tweeted that it might be better for the presenter to come forward now because the new revelations mean the story is going to run for longer and other innocent people are going to get accused on social media plus it's hurting the BBC.
Maybe JV thinks the second set of messages mean the presenter is going to have to leave so they might as well jump now rather than dragging it on.

He is right. Everyone knows anyway. And out of respect for his colleagues he should just face it head on. Hiding behind anonymity only makes it worse for everyone at this point

Oh, sorry. Just found it.

"We have asked the BBC to pause its own investigation while we continue our assessment to establish whether there is evidence of a criminal offence being committed.
"The assessment is being led by detectives from the Met's Specialist Crime Command and follows a virtual meeting with representatives from the BBC on the morning of Monday, 10 July.
"There remains no police investigation at this time."

Im pretty pissed off to be honest that police resources are being used like this given you can barely get a response from them if you get mugged or something

By all accounts the family reported it to the police and were told nothing doing

Then the police looked at it again over teh weekend because of all the screaming that 'something had to be done' and said there was no investigation open

And now another look over at the 'evidence' by the specialist crime team today results in the same outcome again

I don't think anyone has confirmed the contact was through OF. In fact someone who uses OF said that OF take the payments and deducts tax, etc - so payments come from OF. The boy's parents seemed to say the payments into their son's bank account had the presenter's name. That seems to mean the presenter wasn't using OF.
Framing the teen as someone on OF - was another way to try to present them as less vulnerable and shift sympathy/empathy away from them.
It does make you wonder why there are a group of people heavily invested in normalising older men contacting young people for sexual purposes; and framing those young people as being the instigators/having agency/being unreliable perpetrators and narrators.

Agree with this.

Bellajac · 11/07/2023 19:01

Why is everyone so desperate for him to own up? If it's the person everyone thinks it is then it's widely known. It's starting to feel like a soap opera. He doesn't have to own up to me or to any member of the public. He needs to discuss and resolve it with his employer, the BBC.

If you are in a position of power the universal law as decreed by Clarkson, May and Hammond applies: 'Don't be a dick'

If you are a married male high profile TV personality don't go on dating apps because it makes you a dick.

If you do go on a dating app and you are making contact with people over 30 years younger than yourself you are being a dick. (And also a creepy perv regardless of whether it's legal or illegal)

If you are in a position of power like a high profile BBC presenter, then making threats even if you are threatened with being outted (for being a dick - see above two points) makes you a dick.

If you follow the laws of 'not being a dick' you will not find yourself being questioned over whether your actions are illegal nor will you find yourself suspended by the BBC and about to lose your job because your employer has now verified your phone number and messages from your phone of you being a dick.

This is not hard to manage. Anyone claiming he's being victimised at this point really need to give their heads a wobble.

I feel for the wife and kids.

Yep, this.

Yes it feels like everyone knows who it is now. Bbc need a plan asap

cartagenagina · 11/07/2023 19:04

but I don't consider someone who sells photos on OnlyFans, makes a lot of money and buys drugs to be that vulnerable.

Seriously? You don't think a 17 year old drug addict who has to sell sex to an old man to get his fix is vulnerable?

I don't think someone who is potentially facing criminal action or is about to start suing people has any responsibility to his colleagues. Surely he has to protect himself?

It's shit for them but I'd imagine he's not putting his head above the parapet having been advised not to. He is going to lose his job and career regardless I should think and if he hasn't actually done anything wrong, why should he care about the BBC?

I realise that is an entirely selfish viewpoint but he's not quite but nearly under criminal investigation. Maybe he should be keeping quiet.

friendlycat · 11/07/2023 19:07

One can only assume that he is keeping quiet for now, under the instruction of his lawyers and legal team. Which in itself surely raises the possibility that there could be more to come out?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 11/07/2023 19:08

why should he care about the BBC?

Because over the years it's given him a very good career and a stellar paypacket? and if he doesn't care about the BBC, why should they care about him?

Wow what a bizarre opinion that poster holds 🤦‍♀️

What on earth makes someone vulnerable if drug addiction and sexual trading for cash to fund an addiction don't qualify as vulnerable?

You don't have to like someone's choices (or forced choices) to consider them vulnerable 😳

Oddsockday · 11/07/2023 19:08

I predict more and more alleged victims will come forward in the coming days. If he was prolific on gay dating sites as the second accuser suggests.

Bellajac · 11/07/2023 19:10

There only seems to be one name in the frame now. I'm fairly sure Jeremy Vine knows who it is so his comment about other presenters being named is disingenuous.

There are other people here very affected by this situation - possibly a wife, children, a mother. The mother of the young person involved. There is a huge fall from grace which is likely to happen whether anything illegal has happened or not. It's not a drama that affects any of us in any significant way but there are people who will be hurt and don't need this all played out in the public eye.

I really believe the individual should be left to sort it out with the BBC and the people involved.

In the meantime important news which affect us are not being reported on.

Sweetashunni · 11/07/2023 19:13

Superfood · 11/07/2023 18:35

I'm bringing him up to know that it's OK to be gay, and also not ok to be a total dick.

Doesn’t mean it will work, or that his mum brought him up badly.

vera99 · 11/07/2023 19:14

Wouldn't like to be the BBC archivist having to re-record key moments in our history....

Yes, I wonder how many children/young people he has paid for sex acts over the years. There's bound to be more stories coming out.

And of course it's public interest. Unless you don't pay the BBC licence fee, you are contributing to this man's wages. There's no doubt his activities have brought his employer into disrepute so he has to go.

friendlycat · 11/07/2023 19:15

Oddsockday · 11/07/2023 19:08

Whether he was prolific or not we obviously don't know. But as lawyers talking about this case have pointed out on media channels, once the presenter in question publicly comes forward, with whatever statement is going to be used, it can then open the floodgates for other people to come forward with similar accusations and claims against the presenter in question.

But the damn is going to burst soon as this just cannot continue and it is only a matter of time. One has to assume that the BBC are working behind the scenes to rigorously encourage the presenter to come forward and resign. But who knows what severance packages are currently being negotiated etc.

Nat6999 · 11/07/2023 19:16

Who is the presenter?

Juanmartinez · 11/07/2023 19:16

Do you get a severance package if you're sacked?

TimeToRecover · 11/07/2023 19:16

The name was put out there last night tho!

It's really not that hard to find out.

Madamecholetsbonnet · 11/07/2023 19:18

Don't wind me up - that's our bloody money paying off the filthy bastard!

You're surprisingly close. MN wont allow anyone to tell you in case of libel - lots of risk taking folk on twitter tho

TimeToRecover · 11/07/2023 19:20

He was name dropped by a newspaper yesterday but they have no withdrawn that name
