How does the BBC get out of the presenter mess?

Seriously how does the BBC now go forward and what can be the conclusion to this story? The story could run for some time with on going speculation about the presenter and eventually in my opinion a name will drop.

Can there therefore be any sort of fair investigation because I think there may be too much aspirational damage now for a career to be as ed. It seems the knives the BBC sit on this the more scrutiny there is and they desperately need a conclusion?

A second young person has just come forward apparently

BonusHole · 11/07/2023 16:09

BonusHole · 11/07/2023 16:12

There appears to be another allegation from another young person

Yup. BBC breaking.

BBC have confirmed the mobile number used.

I agree with @WeWereInParis . It said nothing illegal or inappropriate happened which suggests something did happen

Are we going to have witch hunts for people doing legal appropriate things now. The mind boggles.

WeWereInParis · 11/07/2023 16:12

Juanmartinez · 11/07/2023 16:10

Where have you seen this?

On bbc news.

The presenter sent abusive and threatening messages to another young person after meeting them on a dating app. The bbc has seen the messages and verified the phone number belongs to the presenter (which I imagine was fairly easy for them to check!).

the80sweregreat · 11/07/2023 16:12

Maybe the parents are hoping the person will be able to go into rehab. A chunk of money would certainly help with fees.
Getting any help on the NHS is a long wait and pretty impossible at the moment.
Their motives seem to be from a good place , but addicts are not easy to help and they probably have gone no contact now anyway , so it might all backfire.
It does seem a desperate move, maybe they thought the bbc would just sack the person straight away or something like that.
People do think things are more straightforward than they are I think and don't realize what is actually involved with employment laws and data protection and all sorts too.

AutumnCrow · 11/07/2023 16:13

Fookin hell.

Where does it say under 18?

the80sweregreat · 11/07/2023 16:14

Oh, the plot thickens then :(
It sounds like more things are coming out now
Using your own mobile! What where they thinking ?

IClaudine · 11/07/2023 16:15

Blossomtoes · 11/07/2023 16:13

Where does it say under 18?

The individual in their early 20s was first contacted anonymously by the male presenter on a dating app, according to the BBC.

You should get your post deleted Bonushole.

WeWereInParis · 11/07/2023 16:16

@Blossomtoes I don't think it does. The bbc says they are in their early 20s but doesn't say when the messages happened.

Again there's a very odd reluctance to refer to the young person's sex. Is it reluctance to out the presenter?

Juanmartinez · 11/07/2023 16:16

All very murky but still nothing illegal. His poor family.

IClaudine · 11/07/2023 16:17

I assume you have to be 18+ to use dating sites?

What a mess.

Blossomtoes · 11/07/2023 16:18

It’s interesting that the expletive filled messages came after alleged victim no 2 tried to blackmail the BBC presenter.

dancinginthesky · 11/07/2023 16:18

I've had friends I've discussed it with saying how it's unfair and trial by media and I disagree personally- and feel slightly validated for feeling pissed at paying a license fee to a network who has on air a man who potentially behaves this way off air with the new allegations

If the bbc has confirmed the number used then regardless of whether its criminal- it's morally bankrupt and an abuse of his status to pressure vulnerable people (I consider all sex workers to be vulnerable) irrelevant to if it's commonplace amongst men to think they can buy consent - I do think a public face of a publicly funded network has an obligation to hold themselves to higher standards and not bring it into disrepute

Blossomtoes · 11/07/2023 16:19

Where do you get the idea they’re sex workers @dancinginthesky?

Well bit harder for them now

Soothingaftersun · 11/07/2023 16:21

Accusations of threatening and bullying behaviour. Very grim indeed

dancinginthesky · 11/07/2023 16:21

@Blossomtoes isn't that what you'd call someone trading sexual content of themselves? For money?

kirinm · 11/07/2023 16:21

So he's using similar sites / the same site stupidly but not illegally. And people are effectively blackmailing him and he gets angry about it. That's not surprising and it wouldn't be surprising if the same thing happened with individual 1.

Changingplace · 11/07/2023 16:22

IClaudine · 11/07/2023 16:17

What a mess.

Have you ever used one? It’s a tick box if that, are you 18, possibly requires a date of birth, it’s not verified in any way.
