Saw it yesterday. It was amazing, really stunning, I am still processing it now. Read up on it, heed the warnings, it is not an easy watch

dontgobaconmyheart · 10/07/2023 17:43

I'd read the book first and see if you recover OP, then you'll know if it's for you.

I've not seen the play (and probably wouldn't want to actually) but have read the book. For me it pretty much fell into the misery porn category- it's very tough going and unrelenting but at the same time very affecting, is well written, and does really stay with you.

If you haven't got a clue what it's about then I recommended you read up about it. It's not for everyone.

MaggieBsBoat · 10/07/2023 17:46

Are you kidding?

Ive read the book. That’s more than enough for this little life of mine.

DowntonCrabby · 10/07/2023 17:48

I absolutely loved the book, of those I recommended it to though, it’s been fairly marmite!
Wasn’t going to have the chance to see the play live so we’ve booked tickets to see the cinema recording of the play, really looking forward to it.

3GuineaPigs · 10/07/2023 17:56

Not read the book not seen the play. For me it could be potentially triggering.

Ostrichbraid · 10/07/2023 18:00

I read the book and got the impression that the writer/people who enjoy it must get a kick out of other people's suffering. Didn't finish it. Suffering porn is a good description (though it started well)
Can't imagine why anyone would want to sit through several (3?) hours of it but evidently they do!

Comefromaway · 10/07/2023 18:03

My daughter has worked shifts at the theatre it used to be on at.

Heed the warnings. All staff have had to have mental health training & some staff have were re-deployed to other venues.

Bobbybobbins · 10/07/2023 18:11

I read the book and couldn't watch it personally.

Twoweeksandcounting · 10/07/2023 18:12

I have read the book more than once (sucker for punishment!) and love it. I recently saw the play, and was absolutely blown away. It really is incredibly moving, as well as brilliantly performed. The quality of the acting was phenomenal, I would see it again.

Obviously don’t go into it without an idea of what it’s actually about, and only go if the subject matter is in any way “appealing” (for want of a better word) to you.

AnotherThingToThinkAbout · 10/07/2023 18:21

I have read the book. You would have to pay me an extreme amount of money to get me to see the play.

Thiswayorthatway · 10/07/2023 18:27

Agree 100%

SallySailor · 10/07/2023 18:28

Saw the play. It is strong stuff. Heed to he warnings. It is very well done, but definitely not for everyone. I will not read the book. I don't think I could take that. I'm not sure I would say I enjoyed the play, more that I hugely admired the stage craft. It's is an overwhelming amount of pain and tragedy for one afternoon.

SallySailor · 10/07/2023 18:29

*heed the warnings

JudgeAnderson · 10/07/2023 18:41

God no. The book was enough. I read one review where the reviewer said they thought the auther actually hated her protagonist.

I actually didn't think it was all that well-written (she seemed not to have heard the adage show, don't tell) and veered into the utterly ludicrous.

Timeandtune · 10/07/2023 18:47

I thought the book was amazing but there were some bits I couldn’t bring myself to read.
I would like to see the filmed version of the play but will need to find someone to go with me. DH wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole.

Fillyourshoes · 10/07/2023 18:50

@Ostrichbraid I read the book and got the impression that the writer/people who enjoy it must get a kick out of other people's suffering

what an odd and negative way you must view the world!

crime dramas and books and documentaries - people can enjoy them but it does not mean that they are a psychopath and enjoy others suffering! 😂

That’s interesting. Given they would have seen behind the scenes and so seen the actors out of character, the lighting, costumes etc surely I would have thought it might have diluted the horror of it!

terriblyangryattimes · 10/07/2023 18:54

Beautifully written book. Its really stayed with me.

I wanted to see the play but couldn't make it work but I've booked to see the play when it's in the cinema in September. Currently re reading the book.

Anaemiafog · 10/07/2023 18:55

I'm going next week.

Yes it was total torture porn. At least American Psycho was making some sort of point...

I think it's important to understand, really understand, what suffering is like and how hard life can be for some people.

The point being child abuse leaves scars that last a life time and this is how. An important point imo.

And wasn't that point just endlessly laboured.
Sorry, I just didn't think it was either well-written or realistic.

The play is probably better though if one doesn't have to read the actual prose, and James Norton is an excellent actor.

Yikesno · 10/07/2023 19:28

I read the book and think "torture porn" is pretty accurate. It was just too much, relentless. I found it triggering and actually wish I hadn't read it. No way would i want to see the play.
