Talk to me about Ocado

BaconAndAvocado · 10/07/2023 08:57

I got a voucher code offering me £25 off a minimum £60 spend at Ocado.
It was through my M and S Sparks card.

I didn't know you could order M and S food online so I snapped it up and am now in receipt of lots of very naughty niceties.

I do my weekly shops at Asda and Aldi and M and S has always been for expensive, rare treats.
However, I also ordered some very reasonably priced items from Ocado (not M and S goods), in their flash sale, some cheaper than Asda!

Does anyone do a basic weekly shop with Ocado? How does it compare price wise to the big supermarkets and Aldi/Lidl?

I tend to do an Ocado shop every 2/3 weeks. It's not cheap but you can get some good value items on promo and they also have the best range of vegetables and fresh food I think. I tend to supplement it with small shops at Aldi during the week.

I do a weekly shop. I'd say prices are comparable to sainsburys

Squishedstormtrooper · 10/07/2023 09:02

Ocado is my little treat! I live alone so book it once a month and top it up with fruit and veg and other fresh bits from Asda.

Theres some great deals, I tend to stock up on the offers and put it in the freezer and it often works out around the same as shopping anywhere else but it’s lovely m and s food so feels fancy.

(edamame beans frozen in the pods for DIY Wagamama’s and the mini whips if you like walnut whips 😍)

I do a big shop with ocado every couple of months if it's not going to be convenient for me to get to the shops. I find it to be a smoother process than other online supermarkets.
Buying lots of the fancier M&S food will make it more expensive but I've been able to do a perfectly reasonably priced shop there by mainly buying ocado own brand. And you can throw in a couple of M&S treats 😄

Gilead · 10/07/2023 09:04

I do Ocado every fortnight, partly because they deliver in bags which is convenient for my disability. They offer a Tesco price promise so I’ve had a couple of refunds. I’ve had fewer substitutes with them, the range is good and their quality is excellent.

Mischance · 10/07/2023 09:06

"There's an Ocado just for you!" is not true - they do not deliver round here.

chohiad · 10/07/2023 09:08

We tried Ocado for a month recently, their basics are similarly priced to other supermarkets, the problem is their essentials/own brand range is extremely limited compared to the bigger supermarkets, so for packed lunches I'm happy to buy supermarket branded crisps, good old Aldi seal bar etc, things like supermarket branded quick foods like taco sets etc but it's hard to do that in Ocado. And of course they price match to Tesco but I wouldn't usually buy Old El Paso unless on offer, I'd buy a Tesco taco kit. So it forced me to spend much more on branded items, and they don't have as many offers.

I didn't find any difference in freshness, so we decided to switch to Sainsbury's in the end to get more choice, and pop into M&S food hall for those nice treats!

yogasaurus · 10/07/2023 09:10

It’s more expensive in general, but the service is far better than any other supermarket delivery. Same day deliveries, they are never late, minimal/no substitutions and a good selection of products.

The midweek delivery pass is great value.

DamaskRosie · 10/07/2023 09:11

I do all my online shopping with Ocado- I think they have the best range (taking into account own brand and other brands) and they tend to be fresher as the stuff comes from the warehouse not the shelves of a supermarket so one less step in the process. Their stock control is also really good so I rarely get subs or missing items.

Agree with this. It’s not the cheapest but the convenience is well worth it. Their app is great, very useable and you can even save recipes and then just add all the ingredients for that meal with a click which saves me a lot of time / headspace. Plus it’s always delivered punctually, it’s rare to have a substitution and the drivers are always so polite and friendly.

I tried to go back to aldi after a year or so of Ocado and I just couldn’t. I ought to for the cost savings but the experience and convenience of Ocado is worth the cost to me.

Lada214 · 10/07/2023 09:12

I only do Ocado or Sainsbury’s. I love on Ocado that they sell variety of brands, I just got someEmma Bridgewater mugs and it was in the sale.
Before they used to sell Cath Kidston too.

Haha they are definitely never late...they arrived 30 minutes early today in the middle of school runs, DH in shower etc.
I had to rouse 16yo DS from his pit 😂

I'm extremely happy with my buys.
There's about 2 proper meals in there but I did save 40%!!

The long shelf life is a big plus for me. Cutting out the middle man (supermarket shelf) makes such a big difference. Also very few substitutions and very reliable deliveries.

I really miss the access to the WR Essentials range - they made a bold claim when they switched to M&S that every product would be available like for like, but that's not true (tinned tomatoes and tonic water are 2 things off the top of my head that are now only available as branded, and I'm not paying extra for those!).

I get a delivery every 10 days or so, and top up at Lidl in between. I think it's probably cheaper (for me) than doing a shop at Tesco/Sainsbury's because I'm not tempted by stuff I didn't go in for - I stick to a list and everything gets used/eaten.

Baneofmyexistence · 10/07/2023 09:31

I use them quite regularly. I find it works out the same in price as doing a Sainsburys/Tesco/Morrisons shop but more than Aldi. You end up buying more branded stuff as their own range is more limited. But they have good offers on the branded stuff. Hardly ever had a substitution. The M&S basic stuff e.g bread, milk, beans are all the same price as anywhere else. I do main shop ocado and then go to aldi for bits in the week.

howtocope · 10/07/2023 09:48

I do a weekly Ocado delivery. I use a lot of the Ocado brand range, which is always good quality. Every year or so I've done a price comparison shop and fill online carts for Tesco, Sains and Ocado. Ocado is always either the same or slightly cheaper for a better selection of items. When money was a bit tighter, I saved a bit by doing click & collect at Aldi. Unfortunately, they stopped offering that service here. I avoid doing the shop in person as I always spend much more when I go up and down the aisles.

ComputerInitiateJump · 10/07/2023 09:56

Ocado used to be really expensive but I think it rivals the other supermarkets well now that they've got a bigger own range and basic M&S good value range. I pay £3.99 a month for a midweek pass.

The delivery is efficient and I like that I get a notification when I'm the next stop. The app is so easy to use and the flash sales can throw up some interesting bargains. I like the one click function so if you forget something you can easily add it without having to edit the whole order.

I still go to Aldi for some cleaning and household bits that are too expensive on ocado such as bin bags, shower gel and hand soap but the bulk of our food is from Ocado.

Jarstastic · 10/07/2023 09:57

Main weekly shop. We buy some meat and fish and veg from local shops to supplement. Also pop to Tesco for offers and Aldi for a few things the teen boys eat a lot of.
recently, I walked all around the Tesco and was really surprised at how expensive it was. I haven’t felt it so much with Ocado. I think they have such a huge range, much bigger than a big Tesco can have still restricted by physical space, that there are always offers on something in the product category.

bruffin · 10/07/2023 10:03

Ive been an Ocado customer since forever. It really isnt as good as it used to be

Before it changed from Waitrose to M&S there were never anything out of stock or substitutes, now its a surprise if I get a complete order.

Choice has really gone down hill as previous poster says the tinned tomatoes have no multipacks of own brand etc

Also they have the stingiest substitution policy and charge whatever the replacement costs , once got 1.80 aubergines substituted for £6 ones and got charged. £7 steak for £20 steak etc
I know you can reject them but they are the only supermarket that has this policy but it doesnt help if thats what you have planned for dinner that night. I do complain and the do refund me but it should be standard not emails going back and forward. Might try requesting refund through the online system and selecting "have been charged the wrong price"

They are still supposed to be better than the other supermarkets so i havent bothered to change, but would love the old Ocado back!

RoyalImpatience · 10/07/2023 13:45

I can't praise them highly enough and in extremely hard to please.

We rarely have subs, all packed well, instant refunds one issues... Any issues we get vouchers... Issues rare.

When tesco would have cost less I get a voucher back with the difference.

GoldenKiwi · 10/07/2023 14:00

I've shopped around a lot recently and Ocado are my favourite.

I quite like Aldi for snacks, cereal etc, but the quality of their fresh fruit, veg and meat is nowhere near as good.

BreatheInBreatheOut · 10/07/2023 14:05

I was using Asda online for a long while but got so fed up with the many substitutions that I switched to Ocado. I find the Ocado own brand very reasonably priced and I like that I can add in the odd M&S treat. Other plus points are delivery of food comes in bags, no having to carry huge trays through the house, never late, not had ONE SINGLE substitution since I switched.

reluctantbrit · 10/07/2023 15:37

We use them when we have a party/friends over/need lots of larger items and they stock some things I find hard to get in our local shops. I like the £0.99 delivery fee on Wednesdays and the shelve life is good.

Saying that, I preferred it when they stocked Waitrose, the M&S range is smaller and without the WR Essentials some things are more expensive I find.

The drivers are polite, phone if they are a bit early but won't moan if they can't come when you tell them nobody is home yet. Hardly any substitutions.

I am not too fussed about the bags as I load everything in my own or into crates at the door.

reluctantbrit · 10/07/2023 15:38

Oh, and I love that our Scout group is able to get them to deliver to really remote camping grounds.

MalbecMakesMeHappy · 10/07/2023 15:41

I do my weekly shop with them. Great quality, good range of ocado, excellent customer service. I pay for their delivery pass for unlimited deliveries, and you can get m&s non-groceries as well. I bought all the kids school uniform along with last weeks food shop, really convenient!
