Talk to me about Ocado

BaconAndAvocado · 10/07/2023 08:57

I got a voucher code offering me £25 off a minimum £60 spend at Ocado.
It was through my M and S Sparks card.

I didn't know you could order M and S food online so I snapped it up and am now in receipt of lots of very naughty niceties.

I do my weekly shops at Asda and Aldi and M and S has always been for expensive, rare treats.
However, I also ordered some very reasonably priced items from Ocado (not M and S goods), in their flash sale, some cheaper than Asda!

Does anyone do a basic weekly shop with Ocado? How does it compare price wise to the big supermarkets and Aldi/Lidl?

I use ocado every week. I have for years-they were very good to me during lockdown and I get priority christmas slots which are fantastic.
I think the customer service is very good.
Very punctual, good drivers etc.
I did prefer it when it was partnered with waitrose, but can walk to my local waitrose to pick up specific things.
Waitrose online is pretty poor in comparison and very unreliable.

I get all heavy, bulky stuff from ocado and try and menu plan so I can get most of the necessities in one go.

I don't feel like M&S is somewhere that I could go for an actual food shop-too expensive and bitty for me.

TheHairyHazelnut · 10/07/2023 15:47

I've used them forever. Well, for at least 12 years +

I agree with the pp who says they were better when partnered with Waitrose. I really, really misss those days. Though the M&S selection is better than when they first started with them (it couldn't be worse!), it's still not a patch on the Waitrose days.

I often flirt with the idea of trying someone else but I stay with them mostly because their app is very easy to use, it's easy to quickly add an item during the week and they are pretty reliable. Cost wise, I suspect they are about on par with Sainsburys - though they tend not to have the loss leaders like dishwasher tablets quite so cheaply.

We've had a weekly ocado slot for years and love it. We've tried other online shops but ocado is so good and reliable. We have a monthly pass so don't pay for delivery.

We find the essential range very reasonable. We spend around £150 on ocado a week for 6 of us plus we do an Asda top up in the week.

Ocado also price match to Tesco on certain items now look for the red pound sign.

Also the app is great, one click button means I can add stuff as it pops in my head quickly rather than having to edit the whole order.

They use bags and you get the bag money back and each bag is for a certain thing eg fridge bags have green writing on, cupboard is blue for example so it's easy to put away.

Hardly any subs or missing items. Great customer service eg one time some milk leaked and we got £10 voucher.

Ibizafun · 10/07/2023 16:12

I've been ordering for years but find the quality has really gone down. Ordered wild salmon which isn't cheap.. they always give you the tail end and this time it came looking like pink slush.

Before covid they'd put the bags in your kitchen. On their website it now says this service is resumed.. but you should see the look on the driver's face when I askConfused

GoldenKiwi · 10/07/2023 16:34

I have a bag samosa folding session now and again so I can fit 99 bags all into 1 outer bag 😂

sandyhappypeople · 10/07/2023 16:48

I used them for years and all through lockdown, but around 2 years ago I found their prices started steadily going up and their quality seemed to go down, shorter dates etc, more replacements, and not as much choice so I stopped using them.

I was actually on their yesterday as I had the same 25% voucher, but even with 25% it's still more expensive than my local supermarkets so I'm not going to bother using them. I think for some items it's worth it, but most of what we buy is billy basic ingredients as we do a lot of cooking, and aldi is probably 1/3rd or half the price so I can't justify it anymore.

Thanks all.
Having had a closer look at all their stock and prices, I won’t be using them on a regular basis.
Maybe just for special occasions when I want to treat us to some M and S grub!

I love Ocado. They really are super convenient, organised, easy to use and with a fab selection of products. Having said that, I much preferred it when they had the Waitrose partnership.

Lovemusic33 · 10/07/2023 19:29

I have a Ocado order about to be delivered. I only shop with them once a month, other weeks I shop with Tesco as they are cheaper. Last week my Tesco order had several things close to use by date which was a bit annoying and a few missing items so o did a ocado shop for this week. I find Ocado fruit and veg last much longer and are better quality, ocados own brand are reasonably priced too, I only buy a few M&S things (mainly meat and bread). They also have a bigger range of products which encourages us to try new things.

Riverlee · 10/07/2023 19:32

I’ve been using them for a while. They always turn up on time. If they’re going to be early or late, they’ll ring and let you know.

Rarely do I get a substitution or something missing.

Basic Ocado prices are price matched and they’ve just started doing vouchers if they cost more.

Wine deals are good.

Like a previous poster said, did a proper shop in actual supermarket recently and concluded that Ocado prices aren’t that different.

Iwanderedlonelyasagoat · 10/07/2023 19:33

I do my weekly shop with them. Our nearest shop is a sainsburys and I don't think overall it's any more expensive. It's so convenient - I have a smart pass, it just automatically books me the same delivery time each week and they always turn up on time and are super polite and helpful. I also think if you are shopping for a whole week it's better on the delivery dates - for example meat often has a whole week on it. It was better though before the M and S switch over for the Waitrose essential stuff. When I'm in sainsburys occasionally for a top up shop I tend to just buy own brand things which are cheaper there and find e.g. chopped tomatoes. There are downsides with online shopping in general - for example you're more likely to get some bits and bobs of crappy fruit and veg, but I just religiously request a refund for anything slightly below par and they always give them.

earsup · 10/07/2023 19:34

was better with waitrose items, dont buy the over priced marks stuff, but most items are cheaper than asda and aldi now so we use it a lot.

stonedaisy · 10/07/2023 23:16

I think they're awful. Very over priced. They miss things from your order and you still get charged so you have check things off as you unpack.
The use by dates are not great.
They let us down badly with a Christmas shop - half of it out if stock.!
The final straw was the Ocado driver hit our car and didn't own up. We had clear evidence so the insurance successfully claimed against them and we didn't get so much as a sorry. Bandits.

I get a fortnightly shop with them and buy stuff in bulk which works out quite cheap. Always on time, rarely a substitute and they have a huge selection so there’s always new bits to try.
