More volcanic activity in Iceland

More earthquakes on Reykjanes in Iceland and it is predicted that an eruption is quite likely to begin soon. So if you ever wanted to see an eruption and missed the action in 2021/2022, soon you might get another chance. Or if you just enjoyed watching on the webcams, there might be another show.

Or if you already have a trip to Iceland coming up in the next few weeks, follow the news, pack your hiking gear and don't miss the chance to see it if the opportunity presents!

How do you find a webcam of the eruption? I'd love to see it.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 09/07/2023 08:49

YouTube.

Search for Icelandic Volcano.

I've had it on for a while yesterday.

KenAdams · 09/07/2023 08:51

It's been talked about on the Iceland groups for a couple of weeks now. Activity looks like an eruption is imminent. We've got a thread going on Facebook with guesses.

momoli · 09/07/2023 08:58

Thank you for sharing.

Zonder · 09/07/2023 08:59

What Iceland groups?

ZeroFucksGivenToday · 09/07/2023 09:01

I went to Iceland in Jan. we didn't get out to the lava flows as it's not easy to get to, and I had my 9YO DD with me.

But I loved Iceland so so much and spent hours at the Perlan museum which gives so much background on it all. And has some exceptional videos.

im going to go and search some live feeds now.

Zonder · 09/07/2023 09:08

We love Iceland too, and especially the Perlan museum. Great starting point for visiting the country.

Puffinshop · 09/07/2023 16:42

I saw the Vísir webcam of Keilir and surrounding area but there's nothing to see right yet.

We first noticed an earthquake in Reykjavík on Wednesday morning and then we actually left for our own holiday so we're missing all the earthquake fun. We have fingers crossed for a nice eruption in a good location that's still going on when we get home!

There wasn't any lava flowing in January. 2021 was March - October and then 2022 was July and August, much shorter. It is quite easy to walk to the end of the 2021 flow, but the craters are about 12 km there and back at the moment I seem to recall... I've made the hike many times and it has been different every time!

Selfish question here but how likely would eruptions in Iceland be to disrupt air travel like it did a few years ago?

Puffinshop · 09/07/2023 17:19

Unlikely. The last two were effusive eruptions, not explosive (just lava, no ash). These kinds of eruptions have no impact on air travel unless the lava flows over the road to the airport!

Phew!

Puffinshop · 10/07/2023 20:09

Lava coming out!

randomuserrr · 10/07/2023 21:11

Volcano nerds! Look for a drone live stream from Isak Finbogason on Youtube - he's about to send a drone over the eruption. I'm far too excited by all this!

Zonder · 10/07/2023 23:42

Amazing!

User10486743 · 11/07/2023 04:54

It's on the BBC news website

bruffin · 11/07/2023 05:08

We were in Iceland in last September and just missed the eruption. Ds decided it walk to it , seened very well organised ascwe dropoed him off and picked him up. We went to the geysers at the power plant while we waited for him

Puffinshop · 11/07/2023 07:00

The craters and the new lava field are still very cool to see even when it's not erupting! I highly recommend it.

And seeing flowing lava in real life is absolutely awe inspiring and that's not hyperbole. If you can go, DO. It's an experience you will never forget.

Bumping this thread for the new volcano info coming through.

Are you around @Puffinshop? Can't remember exactly where you are but would be good to hear from you.

Delatron · 11/11/2023 15:48

Exciting! I happened to be in Iceland last August with the last eruption. We hiked a good 7 miles in total to see it. But wow, such a memorable experience. Seeing the lava spewing up in the air. We sat with a mini bottle of champagne and watched for ages. It’s strangely moving.

StormzyinaTCup · 11/11/2023 16:05

We were out there in 2019 and although all was quiet on the volcano front we had a fantastic time, sight of an active volcano would have been the icing on the cake, especially for DH. @Delatron you timed that well, that must have been quite the experience🌋
