Is this payrise worth it?

I currently take home £2250 per month working around 25 hours per week

Internal promotion has came up £2600 per month working 37.5 hours per week

My current job involves full WFH and I can pick the children up from school/be flexible. Basically as long as the work is done, I'm done. I'm very fortunate in this respect

The new job would involve 2/3 days a week at an office around 40 minutes drive, more stress & responsibility

I don't need the money. I'd be mad to take it, wouldn't I? I have a 2 year old and a 9 year old

The only benefits aside from the monetary increase is the more respectable job title and associated pensionable benefits but I'm 33 and future opportunities will arise

Think going from Civil Service EO2 to DP

Husband is leaving it totally up to me. He's a high earner so my wage can stay as is without any drama

It's really just the better title, I think Blush how do I remove my head from my bum?

Sorry EO1 to DP

So £350 a month extra for an additional 12.5 hrs a week work which averages at 54 hours a month for which you'd be getting about £6.50 an hour?

If you're willing to work 37.5 hrs a week wouldn't it be better to see if you can up your hours in your existing role because it seems like this promotion must be paid less per hour than you're getting at the moment.

kitsuneghost · 08/07/2023 16:19

I wouldn't. £350 extra, take off £100 for petrol then 4hr a week travelling. If you want to boost your pension and are OK financially you can up your contributions

My stance on these things is always to ask what the end goal is, if you think the job title will help you progress and take your career to where you want it to go I would do it. If your salary is more of a means to an end right now, I'd stay where you are.

buzzlightyearsgloves · 08/07/2023 16:25

I personally wouldn't. The financial benefit doesn't sound worth it to loose WFH, days off and being able to work round children. Think how much childcare on your current days off would be in holidays alone.

NotAboutToGoBackAndForth · 08/07/2023 16:26

I wouldn’t if I didn’t need it. That saying, I’m very much team work part time!

BarbaraofSeville · 08/07/2023 16:29

Your numbers are either wrong, or it's not a promotion in terms of grade and salary.

And that's before the need to commute and more stress and responsibility.

If you're taking home £2250 for 25 hours, when converted to FTE, that's a higher salary than one that nets £2600 for full time.

The 'promotion' looks like the take home for a salary in the low £40ks but your FTE must be more like low to mid £50ks.

swanling · 08/07/2023 16:29

Unless it's a stepping stone to somewhere great, that seems like a poor deal.

Samaritans999 · 08/07/2023 16:30

No

Lakeshorelilac · 08/07/2023 16:34

Why is the new, 'better' role paid more poorly? That's a strange sort of promotion.

whatkatydid2013 · 08/07/2023 16:37

Isn’t that effectively a pay cut even in terms of your gross pay on a per hour basis?

VioletCharlotte · 08/07/2023 16:39

Yes, you would be mad to take it! It's actually a pay cut as the hourly rate for the new role is quite a bit less.

TheFlis12345 · 08/07/2023 16:40

So they’re offering 50% more hours (plus commute and more stress) for a 16% pay rise? Are they having a laugh?

LaylaLjungberg · 08/07/2023 16:40

DONT DO IT!!!

fetchacloth · 08/07/2023 16:43

Short answer, no. Stick with what you have, time is more valuable.

Highlandhome · 08/07/2023 16:43

Doing basic maths on those figures, its a reduction in equivalent salary.

That's before you consider the impact on lifestyle by commuting the 40 miles and working full time (additional childcare?)
So doesn't seem financially "worth it".

Having said that - it might be "worth it" if you see some career advancement, route to something else, it's what you really want??

toochesterdraws · 08/07/2023 16:47

Not much of a promotion when the hourly rate is lower than what you get now. Confused

chohiad · 08/07/2023 17:25

I'm confused with your CS comparison (especially as I have no idea what DP or EO1 is- MOD?) are you CS if so, a promotion will come with an FTE pay rise, even if it's to a different department that doesn't pay as well you usually get bottom of the new scale or 10% more, whatever is the highest, but it's mostly laterally transfers that people get caught out on pay, I can't imagine a promotion where your salary is less?

rocketronner · 08/07/2023 17:31

My numbers aren't wrong

I'm currently occupying an E01 position with a permanent uplift that means I bring home £2250 per month

The promotion is 2 grades up - which brings in £2600 per month - not uplifted though and will require the 37.5 hours

I'm basically only considering it for vanity purposes. Obv the extra money would be lovely, but I like being able to WFH and if there's an emergency, being able to attend without commuting out of the city

I think I've got my answer though. I'll probably turn it down. Would be nice to think I'm "x job title" but that doesn't benefit my children much

RoyalImpatience · 08/07/2023 17:34

No I wouldn't take it.

It sounds like you have the dream balance at the moment, decent salary and plenty of time to spend with the dc.

Sounds like your living the dream tbh and it's hard to put a price on that value.

It also sounds like the opportunity would possibly arise in the future.

chohiad · 08/07/2023 17:37

That's a massive uplift on either an MOD EO1 (which is basically AO) but still pretty big for part time EO, that must be higher than the salary scale? Something really doesn't add up with your salary OP so it's hard to advise.

But putting that aside, if you're going from EO to SEO or E1 to C2 and are career minded then yes I would absolutely go for it, especially if you want to stay in the CS.

If it's just about the money then no it would be silly to change, but I'd be checking your pay is correct.

3WildOnes · 08/07/2023 17:45

Surely your increased childcare costs would mean that you actually have less money at the end of the month?

Coronationstation · 08/07/2023 17:57

It’s not really extra money though, your pay per hour will be lower on the “promotion” role, I wouldn’t increase your hours, travel and have less flexibility for less money per hour.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/07/2023 17:58

I'm currently occupying an E01 position with a permanent uplift that means I bring home £2250 per month

Which is equivalent to about £36k for 25 hours, or £54k if you worked full time.

The promotion is 2 grades up - which brings in £2600 per month - not uplifted though and will require the 37.5 hours

Which is equivalent to £43k pa, so much worse pay when comparing FT salaries, for a harder job.

You're currently in a fantastic position - a really good salary, part time hours, and WFH. If you really wanted to earn more, you could either ask for another day a week in your current job - you'd then earn more for less hours, or look for a day a week doing something else if your current job has no more hours available.

BCBird · 08/07/2023 18:01

No I wouldn't. How will the childcare work? Added unnecessary stress
