Can anyone recommend a podcast about world politics and sociology /psychology (not Jordan Peterson) for teen ds?

He found Jordan Peterson podcasts and found them interesting but now after discussing with us we agreed we weren’t sure about them being a good one to listen to. I hadn’t heard of the guy before but had to quickly google and research. My teen ds is fascinated by psychology, world politics, international relations, sociology. Not sure if they are all the right words. It’s topics I know little about. We need to direct him to good quality podcasts. Especially with good role models doing the talking. I suggested the economist maybe as a good start. Hoping someone on here may have others ?

Possibly Pod Save the UK if you don’t mind the swearing. It’s excellent.
Empire is good for the history or would politics.

The Rest is Politics
The New Statesman (plus their Audio Long Reads)
If Books Could Kill

Thank you, I will check these out. I have set his podcasts to “clean” in his screen settings (he is 13) so. It sure can access any with swearing unless I change that

He should watch hasan piker on twitch or you tube. He has millions of followers and talks about news and political issues in a funny accessible way. He specifically talks about how a big part of his audience are young men who would be watching listening to quite radicalising toxic masculinity stuff.

The Rest Is Politics is great and very much global politics not just UK/Europe

Yes if books could kill 😍

I listen to lots of podcasts but very women orientated so probs not the best for a teen boy.

Also nevarro media on YouTube.

Hasan does swaet BTW so the settings might be an issue

Another vote for The Rest is Politics.

Hasan Piker sounds good. These are great . It’s so difficult to make sure they are on the right track and not being influenced by the wrong people.

Joe Rogan.

I've got the perfect recommendation- Politics on the Couch with Rafael Behr. Discussions of politics with experts in politics, psychology, philosophy and sociology, looking at the relationship between psychology, politics and behaviour. Would especially recommend the episode on the authoritarian personality which is fascinating.

I just put hasan piker in to YouTube and is he Hasanabi ?

The rest is politics! It’s discontinued, but amazing. Then all of David runciman’s follow ons, history of ideas and the new one past present future.

I listen to Sam Harris making sense podcast, but with half a mind on him being wrong at points. He is interested in world politics, ai/tech and the idea of the self/meditation. Very interesting.

SquirrelSoShiny · 07/07/2023 08:31

Where do you all listen to your podcasts? I don't have an iPhone.

Harpings · 07/07/2023 08:36

Sam Harris sounds interesting. Why do you say he is wrong in half his points? I think ds may find the self/meditation part quite interesting too

There's a great philosophy podcast on Spotify, it's called "Philosophize This". It's very factual, the chap goes through each of the big philosophers. The chap is engaging and speaks plainly, it's a great intro to the founding principles.

MinnieMountain · 07/07/2023 10:03

@Dumbphone you can get the BBC ones on their website BBC Sounds.

Peterson isn’t bad. I’ve read his books and listened to his lectures. I don’t agree with a lot of his beliefs but it doesn’t mean he’s any less relevant, intelligent or interesting. I don’t think people should spend their lives in an echo chamber, it’s important to listen and try to understand others.

Harpings · 07/07/2023 13:38

Yes I don’t think Peterson is necessarily too bad. But I just want some others he can listen to too. I think Peterson is quite right wing and religious from what I can tell. I will need to encourage my ds to listen objectively and make his own mind up and remember that nobody has the “right” answer to these things. That’s what I am hoping anyway. Fee a bit out of my depth as I am not very knowledgeable myself

stbrandonsboat · 07/07/2023 13:46

Peterson talks a lot, but I can never actually work out what it is he's trying to say. He rambles and doesn't ever really get to the point.

lljkk · 07/07/2023 20:11

BBC world service on Sounds, NewsHour, catch up. They talk global politics all day long.

Sociology / psychology : you could do worse than Thinking Aloud , Laurie Taylor, BBC. He is a sociologist.
