Would you wear a mask in this situation?

I have a stinking cold which my toddler brought back from nursery - spent yesterday in bed feeling sorry for myself. Feeling slightly better today, and have a long-awaited haircut booked in (DH has a weeks annual leave so is looking after our baby giving me the chance for some 'me time').

I took a Covid test which was negative. But despite there being zero rules around mixing/mask wearing I feel really rude going maskless to my hairdresser while knowingly feeling rough. I'm not really coughing or sneezing all over the place, just a runny nose and very sore throat at this point, and shattered.

Would you wear one in this situation?

I'd cancel. Nobody wants your germs.

FiveShelties · 04/07/2023 07:02

I would also cancel, it is really unfair to not only the hairdresser but the other clients.

Campervangirl · 04/07/2023 07:03

I wouldn't cancel but I'd ask the stylist if they'd prefer you to wear a mask but let's be honest, pre covid, having a cold didn't impact your life / where you went unless it was a stinker and you felt awful.
You wouldn't have dreamt of wearing a mask

I would cancel too. If you give the hairdresser your cold, she might not feel able to work and then will lose days of income.
It may not be covid but the pandemic has given me a changed attitude to sharing germs..

Harebrain · 04/07/2023 07:04

I’d also cancel. It doesn’t matter even if it is just a heavy cold, no one will want to catch it if they can avoid it. I hope you feel better soon.

Floofydawg · 04/07/2023 07:04

The mask only protects you, so what's the point? Cancel.

Meowser72 · 04/07/2023 07:05

Sorry, but I think it’s unfair on your hairdresser (and other clients) if you go. You should cancel.

captainsandyscrew · 04/07/2023 07:07

I'm really surprised so many people are saying cancel - as PP said, pre-Covid we were all walking around doing our usual business with colds. If I wasn't on mat leave i would have gone to work feeling like this.

I would cancel too. I’m all for carrying on when you can it’s a cold but considering you spent yesterday in bed and have a very sore throat then it’s not really fair on the hairdresser. I would have cancelled in that situation before covid.

Morechocmorechoc · 04/07/2023 07:08

It's not just a cold, it put you in bed yesterday. Colds don't put you in bed for a day. Dont be so selfish.

captainsandyscrew · 04/07/2023 07:10

Had DH not been at home I wouldn't have spent the day in bed yesterday, I would have just got on with it. If I cancel the hairdresser is down £60 and they have a 2 month waiting list (haven't had a haircut since last November)

It’s the fact that you called it a stinking cold, have been in bed and have a very sore throat. hairdressers are close proximity and that’s not fair.

Tinkietot · 04/07/2023 07:11

I would ring them, I would hate to have to pay 50% for cancelling. Just tell them what you said here and ask what they would prefer, you wear a mask or move the app

No, a mask is to limit the spread of your infection to someone else.

I don't know what I'd do. If I was really snotty and sounded obviously ill, I might give them a call and ask. If I felt rotten, I would rearrange.

GeriatricMumma · 04/07/2023 07:13

How about you call the hairdresser, say you have an awful cold and don't want to lose your deposit so you'll wear a mask?!

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/07/2023 07:13

At the very minimum you should wear a mask, but it may be better to cancel.

DarkForces · 04/07/2023 07:17

As a mask will at best channel your germ behind your head towards your poor hairdresser then either cancel or go but don't bother virtue signalling. Where do you think the air goes? Germs are smaller than air particles. Masks aren't some magic virus sieve

captainsandyscrew · 04/07/2023 07:19

The appointment is at 9am - they open at 9 so I can't call and ask. DH hasn't caught it, baby hasn't caught it, it's just me. I'll take a mask with me and will give them the option to rearrange or wear it

Overthebow · 04/07/2023 07:19

Yes I agree with pp call them and say you can still come in but would they prefer to move the appointment instead, so you don’t lose your money.

DarkForces · 04/07/2023 07:19

If you want to minimise the risk of infecting your hairdresser sit by an open door or window

FiveShelties · 04/07/2023 07:19

while knowingly feeling rough so you feel really rough and are not concerned about making other people feel really rough?

Pre Covid, if I was ill I didn't go to hair or nail appointments. Because I'm not a selfish prick.

Not sure why you asked really if you'd already decided what you were going to do.

SouthCountryGirl · 04/07/2023 07:23

Cancel it. I had an appointment booked pre covid. They cancelled and rescheduled me to be seen by someone else because person seeing me had a cold.

How can people still think this after all this time? 🙄

Air is a mixture of gases, all of which have a smaller molecule size than a virus. Being a sieve for viruses is exactly how masks work to prevent the spread of disease.
