Would you wear a mask in this situation?

I have a stinking cold which my toddler brought back from nursery - spent yesterday in bed feeling sorry for myself. Feeling slightly better today, and have a long-awaited haircut booked in (DH has a weeks annual leave so is looking after our baby giving me the chance for some 'me time').

I took a Covid test which was negative. But despite there being zero rules around mixing/mask wearing I feel really rude going maskless to my hairdresser while knowingly feeling rough. I'm not really coughing or sneezing all over the place, just a runny nose and very sore throat at this point, and shattered.

Would you wear one in this situation?

I'd phone the hairdresser and ask what she would like you to do.

Tessisme · 04/07/2023 09:45

I would have cancelled. Nothing to do with the post Covid era. I would have cancelled long before Covid was even heard of. It's just about being considerate.

WeirdWithNoBeard · 04/07/2023 09:49

What about the hairdressers who work with bad colds? I have had a few haircuts just before a holiday and you get in the chair and the hairdresser is coughing and spluttering all over you passing on their germs, they dont seem to care about spreading illness

I would say go OP

I don't let that happen, tbh. I ask for an alternative stylist, and if not available i tell them they cancelled the gig by not informing me of their illness.
I'd rather have unkempt hair than that.

Zepherine · 04/07/2023 21:01

I'd go with a mask and ask her what she would like you to do.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 04/07/2023 23:49

So what happened OP?

ZairWazAnOldLady · 04/07/2023 23:52

I’d cancel, and I would have pre-Covid. It’s the norm in my family to stay away from others when unwell if it’s infectious.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 05/07/2023 12:38

You should be cancelling out of consideration to your hairdresser not wondering if a mask will help!
A haircut is such close contact I wouldn't even consider it
Book again when you're better

I wouldn't cancel but I'd ask the stylist if they'd prefer you to wear a mask but let's be honest, pre covid, having a cold didn't impact your life / where you went unless it was a stinker and you felt awful.
You wouldn't have dreamt of wearing a mask

And yet every winter I would be at work with these people who had their colds and gave it to me.....

The mask only protects you, so what's the point? Cancel.

No it doesn't.

Morechocmorechoc · 04/07/2023 07:08

It's not just a cold, it put you in bed yesterday. Colds don't put you in bed for a day. Dont be so selfish.

Colds put me in bed.

Had DH not been at home I wouldn't have spent the day in bed yesterday, I would have just got on with it. If I cancel the hairdresser is down £60 and they have a 2 month waiting list (haven't had a haircut since last November)

Call them.

DarkForces · 06/07/2023 18:35

strongtsandcs · 05/07/2023 12:40

No it doesn't.

Exactly. Masks protect no one and give a false sense of security. Ventilation and vaccination are your best bets

Not sure why you bothered asking on MN tbh. You seem determined to do whatever you like anyway

@Floofydawg the question wasn't whether or not I should go, but whether or not I should wear a mask

I'm afraid you've awoken the frothing at the mouth COVID "you're selfish" brigade.

Don't wear a mask. Most colds are caught by touching surfaces that have the virus on. Just wash your hands and don't cough in their face. They are very unlikely to catch your cold
