Would you spend more on a hotel or a premier inn?

Having a night away at the weekend
We have booked a hotel which is £110 for the night.
It's quite a nice boutique hotel
Literally next door is a premier inn which is £38 for the night.
What would you do?
Nicer hotel and less spending money
Or cheap hotel with more spending money ?

I'd book the cheaper one. They're standard but clean and easy. But when we're away we're out most of the day/evening so we only go back to sleep and shower really.

Stratocumulus · 03/07/2023 15:35

Nice hotel every time. It’s all part of the “treat” experience. Go for it.

SimonsCow · 03/07/2023 15:36

Go for the premier inn unless you plan to spend a lot of time in your hotel. Money far better spent on cocktails and fancy food than where you sleep!

I would go for the nicer hotel. Premier Inn is usually much more than that, so one that's £38 is likely to be more grim than I'd want for a special weekend away. I stayed in one about that range a few years ago and let's just say, there was definitely some, er, 'business deals' going on on the part of some of the ladies staying there.

GentlemenPreferBlondes · 03/07/2023 16:07

I’d much rather go for the Premier Inn and spend the difference on a nice meal out. Unless there is something special about the other hotel - eg pool/spa, really fancy breakfast or whatever - that you think is worth paying for.

Oldraver · 03/07/2023 16:08

At £110night for the boutique hotel I would stick with that.

I dont mind a Premier Inn and have several booked for this year, but they sometimes are not cheap...think into the 100's

We have one booked for later in the year, £75, needed to book another room and it had gone up to £145

Xrays · 03/07/2023 16:08

Premier Inn. They’re always very good generally.

NorthWestThree · 03/07/2023 16:09

Definitely Premier Inn. I've stayed in many cheap premier inns (only way we can afford a mini break) and they are fine, never had a problem and certainly never found them to be "grim"!

speluncean · 03/07/2023 16:09

I'd go for the premier inn

anon2022anon · 03/07/2023 16:09

Depends what you're doing.
City break where you're only in the room to sleep: Premier inn
Bit more isolated place, where you might have a meal in the hotel and a couple of drinks: Spend a bit more

MaxwellCat · 03/07/2023 16:11

Premier inn

RoseBucket · 03/07/2023 16:11

Premium inn and a more expensive meal out. They often do the £38 deals.

DutchCowgirl · 03/07/2023 16:12

Depends on the pictures and the location, i’ve been to nice and cosy Premier Inns. But also seen rather run down locations.

Also depends on what we are going to do.. normally we don’t spend much time in hotel rooms so we don’t need much extras. (But i hate old stained carpets and run down bathrooms)

WriteO · 03/07/2023 16:12

Premier inn

ContractQuestion · 03/07/2023 16:12

I wouldn't go for a "cheap" hotel of unknown quality or some travel lodges.

But all the Premier Inns I've stayed in have been fab. You know what you're getting, spottlessly clean and a good breakfast. I thought the Premier Inn was going to be the "more expensive" one in your equation as they aren't usually 38quid...

So yes Id go premier inn unless it was spectacular with lounges and swimming pool/ and relevant. If just somewhere to sleep and youre out in the day i'd go Premier Inn.

This really.

We went one up from the Premier Inn last weekend and I'm glad we did as the area was shit and we spent more time in the room than we normally would and it was rather pleasant to do so.

nothing against a premier inn and like their good night guarantee but sometimes it's nice to stay somewhere else...

SlashsHat · 03/07/2023 16:16

As PP has said, it depends if the hotel stay is the main purpose of the trip away, or a necessity for the trip away - such as going to an gig/museum etc.

If you literally just want somewhere to sleep and thats it, Premier Inn. But if you plan on spending a fair amount of time in the hotel (😉) then boutique.

bossybloss · 03/07/2023 16:17

We normally stay in a Premier Inn as you know what you are getting. We have actually booked more expensive hotels / b and bs which have been a bit shoddy. I also like using the flexible rate in case I need to cancel.

Also agree with this. The more time you'll spend in the room, the nicer you want it. Also the bathroom difference will be massive x

PuttingDownRoots · 03/07/2023 16:37

Depends on the purpose of the trip. Hotels are often just somewhere to sleep for us... so PI or even EasyHotel is fine.

PuttingDownRoots · 03/07/2023 16:39

As for the price reflecting the quality of the PI... we tried to book one in a large Yorkshire town for thos weekend, usually pay no more than £50... its was £150 a night due to local event. Sleeping on PILs living room room floor it is!

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 03/07/2023 16:39

Tbh. It depends on the reason for being away. If it’s a romantic getaway where being in a nice hotel is kind of the point, I’d go for the nice boutique one. If I was away for work, to see a show/concert, night out with friends etc I’d go for the premier inn. Can’t beat an all you can eat breakfast 😂🐷

If there's some big event on nearby and they've already had a lot of bookings, their prices tend to shoot up for that date. If they have loads of rooms left, you can get them way cheaper. We too are going to a big Yorkshire town this weekend, and by picking a PI a few miles away I got our room for half the price of the ones in town.

Peony654 · 03/07/2023 17:00

Depends what you're doing. If it's a city break where you will only sleep in the room, I'd go for the Premier In. But if you want to spend time in the room, stick with boutique hotel

eyesfullofstars · 03/07/2023 17:23

I’d go for the Premier Inn because a hotel is always just a place for me to sleep when I go away so I’m not fussed about it being anything special.
