Would you spend more on a hotel or a premier inn?

Having a night away at the weekend
We have booked a hotel which is £110 for the night.
It's quite a nice boutique hotel
Literally next door is a premier inn which is £38 for the night.
What would you do?
Nicer hotel and less spending money
Or cheap hotel with more spending money ?

Premier inn I'd feel I was on a business trip . Nice hotel special treat .

NeedWineNow · 03/07/2023 17:25

As others have said it depends what you are doing. If it's just an overnight because you're going to an event then Premier Inn but if it's a nice night away then go boutique.

saraclara · 03/07/2023 17:26

If it's a one night stay and you're having a nice dinner out, surely you'll barely be in the room? Check in at 3pm and checkout at 10am is pretty standard, so what are you going to get from a fancy hotel?

Premier inn is much nicer than some independent hotels though. You are guaranteed clean floor/bathroom/sheets etc and not old and dingy!

Riverlee · 03/07/2023 18:06

I’ve more than £110 for a premier inn before!

Make sure you factor in breakfast, parking costs and cancellation policy. I've always been happy with the quality of Premier Inn, I guess it depends how much you will use and enjoy the room vs being out and about.

heartofglass23 · 03/07/2023 18:12

A beds a bed as long as it's not a dump/hostel no en-suite.

LadyLardy · 03/07/2023 18:24

Premier Inn. They are always good and the staff are fab. I've been in a lot of pricier hotels that weren't half as good.

Floralnomad · 03/07/2023 18:27

Premier inn , you know exactly what you are getting .

Depends the reason for staying. We do overnights in premier inns to break up long journeys as we have 3 kids so need 2 rooms most places & they are cheaper but it’s literally just a bed for the night but if we specifically go away for a night or 2 i’d book the nicer place especially it i wanted dinner or to chill out a bit (impossible with kids anyway)

last year i spent £750 for 3 nights in a hilton & although it was nice there was no air con & it was in the heat wave when it hit 39. We then went to legoland for a few days and after that booked a premierr inn literally 5mins from the hilton we’d stayed in so we could rest and travel home to Sdotland the following day. The premierr inn wasn’t the nicest but nor was it the worst but it was £94 with car car parking on a Friday night - more than half what the hilton had and it had working air con so we actually slept & were more comfortable than we had been in the hilton (which obviously had nicer beds and pillows) i wouldn’t always opt for the cheaper option but that time
it was the right thing to do. It also depends on how much money i have to spend on a particular trip

rookiemere · 03/07/2023 18:59

Unless the boutique hotel has a nice spa or something, then PI definitely. Remember you need to add breakfast on top so you're comparing £58 to £110 not £38. Still a bit of a no brainer for me, but then I love Premier Inns.

nicerislands · 03/07/2023 20:12

It's the premier inn on Newcastle quayside or the malmaison
Has anyone stayed in either ?

If it’s literally just a bed for the night and a quick breakfast, I’d always go for the Premier Inn. From experience, other hotels often don’t have king size beds as standard - several times I’ve had to ask, only to be told they’ve only got rooms with standard doubles available. Which I just can’t tolerate any more - not if I’m sharing with dh.

Maggiethecat · 03/07/2023 20:34

faced with same for this weekend in Cambridge except that the PI is only £10 cheaper than the boutique hotel which is closer to station.

going boutique although I’m usually happy with PI if im
not hanging around at hotel.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/07/2023 20:35

@nicerislands, we stayed at the Newcastle Malmaison for a dd’s graduation, but years ago now. I do recall that it was very nice, though.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 03/07/2023 23:02

Personally I'd book the premier inn, the theory being that you don't stay awake to admire the decor

CharlotteSometimes1 · 03/07/2023 23:06

I wouldn’t think twice about booking Malmaison, my theory is that you should never stay somewhere worse than your own home and aim for something much nicer.

CalmDownBoris72 · 03/07/2023 23:08

Is it one night and how long will you be spending in the hotel.

I’d probably go for the Premier Inn if it was just a place to put my head down. It’s a significant difference in price. I’d put the price difference towards a nice breakfast the next morning.

mondaytosunday · 03/07/2023 23:28

If it was just somewhere to sleep then cheap. If it's a indulgent and/or romantic weekend then go expensive!
I'm taking my daughter away for two nights to visit a university (7 hour drive). It's the only time away from home in a year so I've gone expensive.
