Don't want to out myself to much here.

I have 3 kids just had my third a few months ago, 2 out of 3 pregnancies I had Gestational diabetes and had to take medication/insulin for my recent pregnancy. I also do take mood stabilisers and anti psychotics for my MH issues which atm are at bay no issues now. I've obviously put on weight like most women who have kids and I have been known to like sweet things, my diet is usually homemade food and slightly bigger portions and less meals so say I eat twice a day and usually skip breakfast. Currently I'm 5ft 3 and 15 stone, to put it straight I look chunky - I'm big everywhere except for my arms. If I lost a bit of weight I could actually have a curvy physique. I lost a bit of weight in my third pregnancy which shocked myself my DP and everyone around us. But I've noticed I'm putting it back on. The medication I take for my ailments don't help either. Does anyone know if the 'skinny jab' would benefit someone like me? The requirements and side effects is enough to put me off!

Does anyone have any skinny jab stories? Positive or negative?

Posting here for traffic!

Ask away too! Aslong as it's not to outing I will of course answer.

Which 'skinny jab' do you mean?

creativebutterfly · 02/07/2023 23:57

Wegovy

And ozempic

Wegovy hasn't been licensed for use in the U.K. yet.

And ozempic wont be available again until middle of next year

creativebutterfly · 03/07/2023 00:05

Oh really ! Is there any other alternatives suitable for someone like me?

You'd be best speaking to a doctor or pharmacist.

Raquelos · 03/07/2023 02:28

Check out the ozempic thread in the mn weightloss section, lots of helpful posters who will answer your questions there. Not least where to get it.

LovelaceBiggWither · 03/07/2023 02:32

You need to discuss this with your doctor. While people are helpful on the ozempic threads, you've got a complex situation. If it were me I'd want an endo to prescribe and monitor.

This.

Please discuss with your GP first - even try to get a referral to an endocrinologist. Tell your GP your are considering these jabs/tablets etc.

When I had my 6 week check up post partum the doctor almost laughed me out the room tbh she was quite an immature older lady, had no real helpful info to give me which kind of put me off - maybe it's worth seeing a different doctor I guess.

A different doctor sounds like a good idea.

caringcarer · 03/07/2023 09:06

OP I've got an underactive thyroid and have Levothyroxine. I also have Ozempic for prediabetes. I've lost 3 stone now in a little under 14 weeks.

Stickybackplasticbear · 03/07/2023 09:36

It's idiotic to call it the skinny jab.

I'm not sure it is suitable for anyone calling these medications that. In terms of their understanding of how they work and what to expect from them.

This response has given me a bit of hope. I'm also waiting back from the doctors to see if I'm diabetic(I'm pre diabetic at the moment) my mum suffers from type 2 diabetes and I just don't want to go that way but I'm extremely high risk due to the genetic factors and an extremely high bmi.

DH is diabetic and was prescribed ozempic but can't take it because it isn't available 'due to unexpected consumer demand'. That would be all the 'skinny jab' people taking it to get thin whereas the people like DH, who need it to, you know, live, can't get hold of it. He's on a different medicine and it doesn't agree with him at all.

Peridot1 · 03/07/2023 13:14

I think with your other meds and issues you really need to look at this long term not just to lose weight for now. If you are prone to gestational diabetes and are currently pre diabetic you need to be reducing carbs. Have a look at the Freshwell app - it’s free. Lots on information there. Or there is the Low carb bootcamps on here.

Ozempic is in very short supply and won’t be readily available for months. Saxenda is the same. And Wegovy isn’t available yet.

Interestingly there is now quite a lot of research into low carb helping with mental health issues so it’s definitely worth looking into.

Well done but is that healthy?

Ok maybe me naming it the skinny jab is a tad bit insensitive but I do mean well, I'm not interested in being skinny - been there done that and now I'm overweight. Just want a little assistance in regards to losing weight. But yes diet and exercise reigns but some people still need help even with a balanced lifestyle.

These medications help with the hunger hormones and cravings etc. They can have some side effects (I didnt really have huge side effects)

My GP was a bit dismissive of me using them, saying they 'wouldnt work'.

Well they did work, they worked very well, my issue was that for some reason (mental block perhaps, not sure) I just kept 'forgetting' to take them, so would go some weeks without it, then take it for a few weeks, then another few weeks without it, so of course as I wasnt consistent, the loss tailed off and didnt work. That wasnt due to the meds though, that was due to me.

I think if you are someone who has uncontrollable cravings they are a like a miracle, they just shut down all the food noise in your head and you can just eat like 'normal' people. If your problems are more emotionally based though, I think its less helpful.

I didnt have a number of other meds that I was on though, so I think you would need to be careful in your case. I didnt have any problems getting hold of it but that was last year and the year before.

My BMI has gone from 60 to 55 so I'm more healthy now than I was.

Well done.

Its always more healthy to lose weight if one is obese. These sorts of questions 'is that a healthy weight loss', are designed to undermine the achievement.

Im guessing, like me, your cicumstances are not where someone who is 10 stone has plummeted to 7 stone and given your BMI of course you're not.

My starting BMI was around 47 I believe and now its 33.

My DH was on ozempic due to his diabetes (it's what it was originally for), he got awful side effects from it. Really bad gas, whenever he burped it would reek of sick and o my goodness his farts 🤢🤢 Don't get me wrong, his appetite was gone 🤣 But he was having to miss work to his stomach aches! He spoke to lots of people on different forums and it seems like these are very common side effects. So be warned, it does what it says but the cost might be your DP not being able to be in the same room as you due to you being so gassy!

caringcarer · 03/07/2023 14:52

@bellac11, I started at a very weight. Weight loss has slowed now but is steady. My GP prescribed Ozempic for me and I have a weigh in with practice nurse once a month and see practice dietician once a month too. I'm pleased with weight loss but equally I know I still have a very long way to go. You have lost a lot too.

This!! It's annoying when the people who need it can't get it due to the 'cosmetic' industries!

Thats really good service from your GP service, very proactive, its better for illness prevention to be on the front foot and work with people to support them to get the weight off.

You'll get there, its a great start!

Having instead of skipping breakfast should help with reducing cravings for sweet and/or fatty things. I'm a demon later in the day when I've missed breakfast (used to all the time). Now I don't and I don't crave the bad stuff anywhere near as much (underactive thyroid and low BMI). Also the less sweet stuff you eat generally the less you crave it. (But appreciate with little people to look after and tiredness that will feed into sugar cravings too).
