Trying to make DH go to hospital - emergency?

Eggyhair · 02/07/2023 20:17

DH was just having a shower. We heard an almighty bang and he didn't respond when I called him.

I went in there and he was laying on his back, shower curtain pulled off the rail, with the shower attachment on the floor, spraying water everywhere.

He says he doesn't know what happened, except he was standing in the bath, then felt himself fall backwards, then was just lying on the floor.

I've got him up, tried to dry floor as best as possible (the entire floor was flooded), but he's insisting he's fine and will not get checked out.

Maybe he slipped?

Luxell934 · 02/07/2023 20:18

Did he bang his head?

Quartz2208 · 02/07/2023 20:19

Yes he could have concussion from the fall and the cause of the fall needs looking into

PinkFootstool · 02/07/2023 20:20

If he fainted and has no other symptoms, I wouldn't take him to hospital.

Has he hit his head on the way down? Was he unconscious when you found him?

Any existing medical issues?

Coronationstation · 02/07/2023 20:21

Definitely an A&E job. Either he slipped and could have concussion or something has caused him to black out.

Dotandtime · 02/07/2023 20:22

I've fainted on the odd occasion and wouldn't go to A&E. If he banned his head, he should be checked out but you'd know if he'd done that, there'd be blood/a bump.

I don't think a one off faint needs to see anyone.

ZairWazAnOldLady · 02/07/2023 20:23

How does he feel now? What’s the last thing he remembers? Did he piss himself?

StillWantingADog · 02/07/2023 20:28

Is he ok now? If so I’d insist he takes it easy and put him in bed or on the sofa but wouldn’t take him to a&e.

similar happened to my husband once and he had a very bad cut on his head and there was blood spewing everywhere and I had to get an ambulance. If your dh hasn’t hurt his head, he likely just fainted and will be fine. Obvs go to GP if it happens again.

Eggyhair · 02/07/2023 20:34

I don't think he pissed himself, but the amount of water on the floor, it would be impossible to say.

He has high blood pressure, he's just done his BP and it's 137/82. He's on Amlodipine and was supposed to start Ramipril as well, but has so far refused to take it as the BP monitor says his BP is "high to normal".

He's 51 and never fainted before.

He did take the shower curtain down, so must have tried to save himself, but can't remember what happened.

I wondered if it was a simple faint, but the floor was absolutely flooded and he was lying there, like he was asleep to start with.

He's refusing to let me phone 111 and says he's "fine".

Honestly MN. You could have all 4 limbs hanging off & it would be 'A&E? Are you mad?'

Yes, he should go to A&E

If he had an explanation eg he felt unwell or dizzy before fainting - ok. But he doesn't. Most people will recollect feeling faint before it actually happens.

💯 A&E. He has existing medical conditions

Dotandtime · 02/07/2023 20:39

Yes, that does sound like he needs to be seen. Could you phone 111 for advice and if they say to go would he listen to them?

GoodChat · 02/07/2023 20:40

Phone 999 and tell him you're not willing to wake up next to a corpse.

declutteringmymind · 02/07/2023 20:41

He could have had a seizure or anything. He needs checking over.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 02/07/2023 20:43

Definitely an A&E job. He can't remember what happened, he almost certainly hit his head. He needs checking over for his own well being

Notonthestairs · 02/07/2023 20:43

As a minimum I'd ring 111.

If he won't go to A&E tonight I think he should commit to seeing his GP tomorrow.

Moresleepandwine · 02/07/2023 20:46

He needs to go to hospital and get checked out. My dad slipped and fell flat on his back and had no obvious injuries/didn't hit his head so he didn't go to hospital. One week later, he had the worst headache in the world. He went to hospital and they found the fall had started a very slow bleed in his brain which had built up until he needed two surgeries.
Your DH might be perfectly alright but falls like this don't need to cause visible injuries to be dangerous.

Gymmum82 · 02/07/2023 20:47

I would get checked. He could have had a seizure. Especially if he doesn’t remember what happened.
Normally fainting you feel yourself going. Seizures you wake up on the floor with no idea what happened. The fact water was all over the floor would make me think he could have been thrashing around causing it to be there. Seizures shouldn’t be ignored

AndSoFinally · 02/07/2023 20:48

Was he having a wee in the shower? Micturition syncope is a thing, but not necessarily an emergency

If you're worried it should always be A&E though

Insheerpanic · 02/07/2023 20:48

He should defo go get checked.. ring 111 even by a out of hours drs but id defo get checked if I was him! Anything could of caused it

stephaniezanoni · 02/07/2023 20:51

I've fainted lots and every time I recall feeling lightheaded and knowing I was going to faint. I'd definitely call 111 and see what they suggest.

romdowa · 02/07/2023 20:51

He needs to be checked out. I used to faint a lot in my 20s and you'd definitely feel it coming on. To just collapse and have no memory of why , isn't a good thing . My father had similar blackouts and it turned out they were mini strokes. He ended up having a massive one which left his permanently disabled with a brain injury

Hollyppp · 02/07/2023 20:52

I would call 111 even if he’s insisting no

Nicetiesandwhatnot · 02/07/2023 20:57

Another vote for A and E but drive him down if you can .
