What sort of coat/ jacket can I wear to a wedding that isn't frumpy?

All the options in JL today looked like they were straight out of the 00s- cropped bolero jackets etc. I don't really like the double breasted blazers either.

I know I'm fussy!

A bolero

A pashmina is never the answer. 😄

Agreed! Really dated plus people are always fiddling with them and they rarely look smart. Blazers look so much more out together imo

What they call a longline duster coat is your friend here. Light for summer but gives a polished look in my opinion. Red would be a bright pop but a light pink would also work!

Pashmina, definitely.

It's a beautiful dress

Poster said not frumpy. Nothing frumpier than a pashmina!

Terryer · 03/07/2023 09:06

I love pashminas. I feel the cold and love to know I'll have something to snuggle with in church.

I'd probably wear a blazer as they are more fashionable but I'd take a pashmina as well

LadyEloise1 · 03/07/2023 09:18

Pashminas are great.

SirChenjins · 03/07/2023 09:23

Frumpy or not, pashminas are great - nothing worse than being cold, and given that’s it’s currently 14 degrees here in Edinburgh but feeling like 12 with the wind chill I’d be erring on the side of caution. Alternatives are a blazer or a duster coat like the one upthread. Or swap the dress for a wool one!

RattyHealy · 03/07/2023 09:43

It's great if you like your pashminas but they are definitely frumpy and will turn that dress into MOB 2004.

Catspyjamas17 · 03/07/2023 09:46

Poofy sleeves and a blazer always annoy me though, the sleeves get all rumpled up underneath. I'd probably wear something warmer altogether like a trouser suit and save the summer dress for when it is actually warm.

Terryer · 03/07/2023 09:50

The dress isn't the most fashionable, I don't think a pashmina will ruin it.

But I'm a pashmina addict and don't even care

Grimbelina · 03/07/2023 12:15

I would definitely be getting a longline duster coat and possibly taking a pashmina/cashmere scarf as well

Lablover678 · 03/07/2023 12:47

I would suggest either a structured cocoon coat with bracelet sleeves and a stand up collar in one of the colours or a structured/stiff wrap perhaps double-sided silk or taffeta or similar? Something a little dramatic which has some structure and shape to it and won't wrinkle.

Something like this as you like Quiz.

That is not a dress to put a blazer on the lines would just be all wrong as it’s flowy. A pashmina is the way forward. I have a lovely wrap it’s not a true pashmina as it has a shaped shoulder on one side.

gogomoto · 03/07/2023 12:55

Id wear a trench coat and pashmina, perfect for wind and rain, but if weather is warm (it can be very warm in Glasgow!) just ditch both

yojojomomo · 03/07/2023 13:01

I usually just opt for a coat now for the ceremony and any outdoor bits and then ditch it for reception. Receptions are usually warm and the party bit even hotter. I agree with you that boleros and cardigans are ugh and even blazers don't look great with dresses for weddings.

Cheaper M&S version of the same jacket.

I agree. The shape of the dress wouldn't suit a blazer or structured jacket.

JeandeServiette · 03/07/2023 13:23

I've got a lovely vintage, loopy-knit cropped cardigan that has had a couple of wedding outings. Something like that or maybe mohair?

I would decide what you want and go hunting for it on vintage sites.
