We Will Rock You musical- is it crap?

My DS (10) has developed a love for Queen over the last couple of months. He is desperate to go and see them but they aren’t touring (not sure if they will again).

I’ve been having a little look and have seen the We Will Rock You show in London is doing a limited run. We live a few hours from London but visit 4/5 times a year for various shows, concerts etc as our station does cheap tickets and it’s only about 2 hours on train. I’ve had a look at reviews and they’re pretty scathing but I’m wondering if that would all go over DS’s head and he’d just love the staging/songs?

Has anyone been to the new run and can advise? I would stay over night but we’d combine the day out with a tour around Buckingham palace and a trip to fortnum and masons ice cream parlour! Thanks

It's basically like watching a Queen tribute band performing around rather a weak storyline. If the main point of going is to see the songs performed live rather than seeing an amazing theatre show then he'll enjoy it - we did!

Salacia · 01/07/2023 09:52

It’s crap but enjoyable crap. My favourite bit is seeing how they can shoehorn in the next song with a clunky bit of dialogue (‘How are we going to get there? Maybe we should ride our BICYCLE, BICYCLE’). The cast are normally brilliant and I think you’d have fun. Took my Queen obsessed brother at a similar age and he loved it.

Thank you! The cheap seats are only £25 each so don’t mind paying that. Will get it booked tonight!

Hands down the biggest load of shit I’ve ever seen in my life. Couldn’t pay me to watch that again.

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 01/07/2023 18:11

We saw it about 10 years ago and it was totally brilliant!!

Has it been changed, or do we just have terrible taste 🤔

PastTheGin · 01/07/2023 18:12

Our kids did the We will rock you musical at primary school and were obsessed with Queen. We went to watch it and it was good fun!

tregunamekoidestrecorumsatisdee · 01/07/2023 18:12

I thought it was absolute crap. I go to about 8 musicals a year and this was one of the worst I've seen.

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 01/07/2023 18:12

It’s great fun and well worth a watch particularly if the music is your primary reason for going.

whatsinanameeh · 01/07/2023 18:13

My ds (11) enjoys Queen and we have booked Queen extravaganza, you should look if it's touring near you if it's really more about the music than seeing a musical iykwim.

Camdenish · 01/07/2023 18:15

I laughed at people who went to see it. Then I had a child. This child is a huge Freddie Mercury fan. I took her to see the show when it was playing at Wimbledon. Rather irritating as it had been at the Dominion, round the corner from us, for years. o hate musicals, I took one for the kid…

…it was bloody brilliant!

thimbbwebelr153 · 01/07/2023 18:22

Best thing to do is enjoy the music and roll your eyes at Ben Elton's agenda lol

Snozzlemaid · 01/07/2023 18:46

Storyline's not great but obviously the songs are good, so it's good fun.
And you get a singalong at the end.

Roselilly36 · 01/07/2023 19:21

We saw it years ago, we enjoyed it, £25 a ticket sounds a bargain. Enjoy

ImperfectAlf · 01/07/2023 19:24

We saw it yesterday. We'd seen the original. It's been updated.

I would have been happy to sit through it again straight after!

I am a massive Queen fan though

Riverlee · 01/07/2023 19:32

Saw it in the West End several years ago and loved it.

The new version has had mixed reviews - some people love it, others prefer the original.

claracluck1978 · 01/07/2023 19:37

A friend of mine worked in the show for 10 years or so. 8 performances a week. Every week. For 10 years. I've heard a lot about that show and not much of it was good!

Anjo2011 · 01/07/2023 19:39

Haven't seen it but love Lee Mead so might be worth it for him. Saying that, it’s a limited run for a reason!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/07/2023 19:40

It's Queen songs, of course it's not going to be crap! Karaoke singers doing Queen songs is entertaining because the songs are gold

bruffin · 01/07/2023 19:42

Ive seen the old and new production. We loved it ,its fun.

Maighnuad · 01/07/2023 19:46

I took my son when he was 12 and he loved it. He couldn’t talk during killer queen as he thought the ladies may fall out !!!!😂
we seen it again with a group of us when he was 18 and again had a fab time !

OwlBabiesAreCute · 01/07/2023 19:48

I went with a group from work, they all adored it. I thought it was crap but was definitely outvoted!

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 01/07/2023 19:52

Queen music deserves better in my opinion. We went just as Covid was kicking off in Feb 2020 and all I recall was thinking I’m going to die because of this crap show 😂 for pretty much all of it because there was so much coughing around us.

Perhaps I should see it again under less paranoid circumstances.

AuntieMarys · 01/07/2023 19:52

It is. Shocking

christmastreefarm · 01/07/2023 19:54

I don't think seen any positive reviews on it (I'm on a theatre fb page)

I have also seen some very very cheap tickets deals which would suggest it isn't selling well.

https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g186338-d2334281-Reviews-We_Will_Rock_You-London_England.html trip advisor disagrees with you, and the people in the theatre when i saw it last month. Although dont disagree cheap tickets are available , we only paid £25 i think .
https://www.whatsonstage.com/news/we-will-rock-you-review-its-already-defied-critics-so-does-anything-here-really-matter_1306755/ this review says it all really
"Let’s face it – no one is expecting We Will Rock You to provide a Pulitzer-winning script or genre-defining creative expertise. But if audiences are there for some Queen classics, sung by the cream of the MT crop, that’s exactly what they’re going to be getting."
I go to the theatre a lot ie once a month and it was fun, silly and enjoyable and would happily go again.

We Will Rock You review – it’s already defied critics, so does anything here really matter

We Will Rock You is back in the West End
