Soft but also firm pillows

PureBlackVoid · 27/06/2023 11:26

I need new pillows that are soft to lie on, but also firm so that they don’t sink/compact into a brick after a while.

Proper firm pillows are no good for me (such memory foam and some some other types that don’t budge) but anything ‘soft and bouncy’ just flattens.

The pillows/cushions I find comfiest are those you get on a cushion backed sofa. They are huge, over stuffed, sink ever so slightly but the support is distributed evenly between my head/neck/top of my shoulders. Is there a bedroom pillow like this? I am so tired of waking up in pain.

Bounceback pillows. Only kind I’ve ever got on with.

PureBlackVoid · 27/06/2023 11:42

Thanks. I’ve tried silent night bounce back pillows in the past and found that they clumped unfortunately.

I've found that wool pillows are the best for what you describe. They are expensive, but they're comfortable to sleep on and supportive so that my head, neck and shoulders stay in alignment. If you buy washable ones you can top-up/take out the wool filling to make it just right for you. I have the ones by the Woolroom.

I'm also looking for the Unicorn of pillows as well!
I have wide shoulders so need 2 (side sleeper) but if they are firm I get ear ache, soft and I wake up with a sore neck oh and keep you cool as I run very hot!
Anyone got a solution, don't mind the cost as sleep is important and its always my pillows that wake me up in the night these days 😔

Latex! Soft and squishy with really good support. They stay the same for years and keep your head off of your shoulder. I got mine from latex sense

Barold · 27/06/2023 12:52

I would put the premier inn firm pillows in this category.

I use memory foam for my actual head but fling my legs over 'normal' pillows and these are useless for that purpose - because they're actually good sleeping pillows!

cocksstrideintheevening · 27/06/2023 12:54

Dunelm side sleeper pillows.

Thanks for that they look perfect 🙂

Thanks for the replies. I’ve never tried a wool filled one, that might be worth a try. I can’t remember if I’ve tried latex, but will also look at those when I can get to a shop to feel them.

I don’t mind the cost at this point, I dread to think how much money I’ve spent over the years just to be groggy and snappy all day because of a bad shoulder.

Simba hybrid! Best thing I've ever bought. Bith sides have a difference topper and you add and remove as much filling as you want. Absolutely bliss.

OwlBasket · 27/06/2023 13:54

Another vote for wool. They’re excellent and wel worth the hefty price tag

Chelsea26 · 27/06/2023 14:34

I have a tempur cloud pillow - it was £100 but it is amazing

MrsHsGirl · 27/06/2023 15:28

Another vote for latex. By far the best we've had

VerityUnreasonble · 27/06/2023 15:35

Ikea have some great pillows, I would go squeeze some and see if any meet the brief.

And also buy a variety of random household objects I didn't know I needed.

And maybe meatballs.

Moooooooooooooooooo · 27/06/2023 16:34

Oh. Not wool! I bought two and they were so uncomfortable. From the Wool Room too.

eveoha · 27/06/2023 16:43

Mooo I’ll buy them off you - I love wool pillows - firm supportive but ‘soft’ - oh and my wool duvet 👍🏿☘️

Nearlyadoctor · 27/06/2023 17:07

I bought 2 wool pillows in search of the unicorn of pillows and hate them, I actually find them hard . Also quite expensive as from the wool room as pp.
I used to love M&S top end cotton and silk from about 20 years ago but they stopped making them.
Since then I’ve bought a Dunlopillo super comfort pillow which is latex and I love it. They come in different heights as well . Not cheap either though.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 27/06/2023 17:15

Latex pillows - dulopillo - revolutionalised my life. They cost a lot but you'll never replace them! (£90 each, but if you spend £20 every three months on bounce back, you'll spend it anyway)

Nat6999 · 27/06/2023 17:18

Silentnight memory foam, they are a solid outer & shredded memory foam inner, you can plump them up like an ordinary pillow.

Imtoooldforallthis · 27/06/2023 17:21

Might be worth trying QVC you can try the pillows and still return.

dontchaknow · 27/06/2023 17:27

Devon duvets have a wool pillow that is made in 4 sections that you fold or roll up into the cover. So I have I section rolled, the others folded, so I get good support for my neck and shoulders. I am a side sleeper.

dontchaknow · 27/06/2023 17:29

Also you can unfurl the 4 section pillow (it looks like a duvet like that) to air it off properly. And that fluffs it up like new again.

AllLopsided · 28/06/2023 01:03

I ordered a pack of 2 feather pillows from M&S for DH who has a shoulder problem and wants the same thing as you I think. I expected to have to send them back but he really likes them! I got firm but they come in medium too.

My personal solution is a memory foam pillow underneath and an old, firm-ish down and feather one on top.

I've got the Premier Inn pillows (both firm and soft). They are huge so haven't compacted into little bricks as you say. The hard ones are a bit too much for me other than to use as a base pillow if I'm sitting up in bed. I'm still getting used to the soft ones but they seem to be a good mix of comfort and support.

£36/per two pack delivered from the Premier Inn website.
