What types of accountants are on 100k a year?

endingupinmanchester · 25/06/2023 14:51

Just heard that some accountants in the UK are on 100k a year
I would ask family and friends but unfortunately my parents are in academia and have little clue what accountants actually do and my friends are in other sectors

A director level in Big 4 (probably c10 years post qualified working 60 hour weeks for that decade).

I earn close to that as a financial services technical accounting specialist having made the grade below in Big 4 before I jumped ship into industry. I would earn more in London.

‘Head of’ roles in financial services finance teams often will.

QueSyrahSyrah · 25/06/2023 14:57

Came to say the same. I know a few people on over 6 figures in accountancy and they're all big 4 and Director level.

tweener · 25/06/2023 14:58

Plenty of FC/FD roles in smaller companies are 100k +
Moving into FBP roles as a qualified accountant can also lead to 100k. Heads of accounting departments in larger companies etc.
It's not all Big 4.

Silvergoldandglitter · 25/06/2023 15:02

I'm not in Big 4 but 'heads of' in my company are on £90k plus.

PurplePear7 · 25/06/2023 15:02

An CA working in industry would get that quite easily.

In practice, you’d be on over £100k as a director in Big4 or in London. Elsewhere you would definitely be on over £100k once you got to partner. Long hours though and often very thankless!

BlackberryTart · 25/06/2023 15:02

I qualified at a Big 4 and then moved straight into industry. I specialised in media and had my first FD role about 5 years after moving out of practice.
I passed £100k a long time ago now, and I have two members of my UK team over that (team of 8).

I would say that media roles probably pay the lowest of most industries so you could find lots of senior finance roles in businesses over £100k these days.
Typically much lower stress and shorter hours than the Big 4!

My boss (top ten tier director level) was earning £90k about 10 years ago, excluding benefits and bonus. He was very good at his job and worked hard but not insane hours. All the partners at the firm would have been on well over £100k.

My ex colleague is on close to £100k I'd reckon (I'm not totally sure though). Working in industry in London, she works very very hard when she has to but it's not unrelenting. She was on £60k about 8 years ago and has had promotions since then.

I don't think it's hard to get to £100k if you are dedicated and hard working and also willing to switch jobs for a better offer. Although having said that my director had been in his role for years.

Group Accountant in a massive firm overseeing Management Accountants (eg internal accountancy not external).

Olibulungi · 25/06/2023 15:09

Technical reporting manager - insurance industry. £95k + bonus.

Innocents4321 · 25/06/2023 15:10

Chartered ones working for huge, possibly American, firms who have worked their way up?

Whataretheodds · 25/06/2023 15:13

I'm not an accountant but am senior manager/Head of in a financial services and my finance equivalents within the organisation would be on £100k, probably quicker than me.

mynameiscalypso · 25/06/2023 15:13

I made that as a Senior Manager in a Big 4 when you include bonus. I work for a charity now and do not make that. My DH is a VP of Finance in a tech company and earns over 100k

Spirallingdownwards · 25/06/2023 15:18

Most chartered accountants with a bitnkf experience not just London.

EnergyJaguar · 25/06/2023 15:35

I’d say £100k really isn’t that much anymore tbh in the Big 4 or in Industry, especially in Financial Services, Energy etc

You’ll have Partners even just outside the Big 4 Accountancy firm Grant Thornton let’s say starting at £150k in then in 2021 up
to £610k profit per equity partner.

Nothingfallingdowntoday · 25/06/2023 16:04

Those with a good few years experience 10yrs plus in a senior role in practice or many industries.

Dontlistitonfacebook · 25/06/2023 16:06
  1. Partners in big firms

  2. Financial directors in big businesses

PickledPurplePickle · 25/06/2023 16:12

Partner of small firm

FD in industry

Big 4

its hard work though

SilverOrchid · 25/06/2023 16:15

Big 4 director in the North, ten years post graduating.

bimbambombo · 25/06/2023 16:16

My dh is on way more than that. FD at large company. Wfh ft

SilverOrchid · 25/06/2023 16:16

SilverOrchid · 25/06/2023 16:15

Big 4 director in the North, ten years post graduating.

I definitely haven’t done ten years of 60 hour weeks though. I probably average 40-50 hours a week over the last 5 years, more before that when I was more junior.

thenewera · 25/06/2023 16:29

I was on around £75k including bonus about 15 years ago- bog standard 7 years post qualified chartered accountant in London financial services. Not particularly long hours. I suspect most of my former colleagues are on £100k plus now and some I trained with with easily over £250k plus.

Mstxxx · 25/06/2023 16:37

My partner (qualified accountant) works in a company in the tax department as a 'Head Of' - approx £130k + 20-30% bonus a year. Worked at a Big 4 for about 12ish years and has been working in the industry for about 15 in total. Not in London, this is up North.

Non-stop working though. He goes to work at 6am and doesn't leave the office until 7pm most of the time. If he does leave earlier I can see him emailing work on his phone and sometimes has to be on calls at 11pm at night. Even when he takes a day off, people at his work know he has taken annual leave and will still phone him about work. It's insane to me

pharmachameleon · 25/06/2023 16:37

My DH is an accountant with his own business and takes a salary of £150k. He isn't a CA-didn't go to university which I think he feels inadequate about however I did and I'm on about a third of what he earns so he should be proud of himself.

Soontobe60 · 25/06/2023 16:39

DD worked for a Big 4 from Uni for 7 years. Salary rose to £40k. Just moved to a big online company doing the same job for almost double the salary. She will be on 100k in a couple of years when she reaches 30 most likely.

User5927439 · 25/06/2023 16:45

My dh earns three times that as as FD. He can't get staff for love nor money and is currently recruiting from abroad. Due to demand wages are going up and up.

Definitely do it if you are considering it. There's apprenticeships for accountancy too. Dh's firm targets local sixth firms to try and get people.
