I am thinking of booking a holiday during xmas after sitting my professional exams

My mum tells me not to go bc it makes me look lazy

But its xmas, so i doubt many ppl will be at work during this time

Surely you don’t need your mum’s permission.

noblegiraffe · 24/06/2023 11:57

Have you actually got a job? Your thread title isn't clear.

I don't need her permission ... I am only wondering if I would look bad and ruin my relationship with my line manager if I took a holiday

During your first what? Week? Probably not ok.

Year? Absolutely normal

Cactusali · 24/06/2023 11:59

In most organisations you have to accrue leave before being able to take time off.

Teacakeorcrumpet · 24/06/2023 12:01

Are you starting on a graduate training scheme in August/September by any chance?

If so, wait until you've actually started your job before booking anything. If you fail one of your first block of exams you'll need to resit in January. If you're going to be working in audit then December/January/February is busy season and you'll be on stock takes or out at client sites and a holiday would not be appreciated by your coworkers.

Gazelda · 24/06/2023 12:12

As long as it fits with your team members leave plans, and you've accrued leave, then I can't see why it's a problem.

I expect my team to take responsibility to spread their AL across the year, to keep them fresh and rested. It annoys me when I see that they're in danger of having a years worth of leave to take in the last 3 months of their AL calendar.

coodawoodashooda · 24/06/2023 12:18

I wouldn't want a track record of prioritising that but I don't know enough about the context to judge you.

NoSquirrels · 24/06/2023 12:20

When are you starting work in relation to your proposed Christmas holiday? In general you should not book a holiday before starting if possible, in case they can’t give you that time off.

Nope. Legally everyone is entitled to almost six weeks' annual leave. https://www.gov.uk/holiday-entitlement-rights

Totally normal to take leave during your first year, and any good employer would encourage you to use your time off.

Holiday entitlement

Holiday entitlement or annual leave - information for employers and workers on entitlement, calculating leave, taking leave, accruing leave and disputes

Lazy isn't the word I'd use really, maybe discuss with your manager and see if it's feasible? We ask everyone at interview if they have any holidays planned in near future, so we can take them into account when planning training and inductions. If people leave the role and have taken more leave than they've accrued then the equivalent hours' pay is deducted from their final pay packet.

Beezknees · 24/06/2023 12:28

How long have you been working there?

SweetSakura · 24/06/2023 12:30

Your first what? Week/month/year?

I expect and want people to take their leave, I don't need a burnt out team. I judge them on how hard they work when they are at work, not whether they take their leave

If it’s going to be a new employer (i.e. you haven’t got the job yet) then it’s standard to postpone your start date rather than taking the first week as leave.
if it’s an existing employer, in most workplaces you would request the annual leave before booking a holiday, particularly around Xmas when there’s increased demand.
if it’s going to be a new role with an existing employer, you should still clear it with your new manager but having leave between roles isn’t necessarily a bad idea as you would be back from your holiday and ready to focus on your new role.

Xiaoxiong · 24/06/2023 12:39

If you take holiday in your:
First day - flaky
First week - should have renegotiated start date a week later
First month - not great as you're just getting into the swing of it, but ok maybe it was something you really couldn't move like a wedding and it was too far from the original start date to plan around.
First 6 months - fine as long as it doesn't conflict with any training (you need it earlier rather than later in most jobs)
First year and beyond - fine

This is assuming a normal office job without particular busy or quiet periods.

ApolloandDaphne · 24/06/2023 14:31

If you have a job then you are due holidays. How long have you been working there?

I mean should I take a job during my probation period? first 6 months

Do you mean should you take a HOLIDAY during your probation period in a new job?

daisychain01 · 24/06/2023 16:08

Why didn't you cover this when you were negotiating your new job? Eg: I am planning a week away in December, is this OK?

Springing it on your manager after you start the job may make you look like you can't plan ahead. It's an avoidable issue.

i don't think it would make you fail your probation but it wouldn't look good

endingupinmanchester · 24/06/2023 16:03

In your first 6 months, you will have accrued at lease 12 days leave, so just make a start there and then ask if you can book time off. Just make sure you don't book the leave during peak Christmas unless you know what the protocol is - some places need cover and others shut down over the Christmas/NY period, it's job and industry specific.

your OP title and subsequent posts are very confusing!
