I have a HCA interview on Monday (it's remote) any tips? And any ideas on questions I might be asked? Thank you

Look at the Trust's core values - often you'll be asked how you can apply these to your role.

Also, promoting dignity is usually a big one.

Thank you @buonnatale

Definitely expect a question about confidentiality (ie don't give out patient details over the phone/post about patients on social media), and one about escalating concerns - whether clinical concerns or safety issues, always make sure you are telling someone senior straight away. And yes, privacy and dignity is key. Maybe also something about challenging colleagues if you see bad practice.

Thank you @RenegadeKeeblerElf

Good suggestions @RenegadeKeeblerElf

I too was going to mention confidentiality and dignity for the client. Try to use the STAR method to answer, but there are others. Write out and think about a few examples when you have demonstrated these things.

Communication- 'tell us about a time you had a difficult conversation/situation with a client/service user' What was the situation, what did you do, the outcome etc.

Equality in the workplace is another common one. Treating everyone the same regardless of gender, colour, religion, disability etc.

Empowering and encouraging clients to do what they can- and not just take over- not a specific question, but could be added into one

Also have 1-2 questions to ask at the end. Best of luck and let us know how you get on.

If they ask you to tell them about yourself, try and explain any previous care roles or qualifications you have. Really sell yourself.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/06/2023 17:08

Safeguarding will probably come up. And yes look at the trust values.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/06/2023 17:10

If you get asked a question, what would you do if. The answer is probably escalate to someone more senior/ nurse in charge. And follow the trust policies and procedures. Is usually a good answer.

TOWGA · 24/06/2023 19:03

Thank you all, safeguarding is quite important in my current role as a TA so I have some prior knowledge of safeguarding, I don't have any experience in care work, however my sister is a nurse in a different hospital so well aware of the role and what it in tales

I am dyslexic, is this likely to put them off?

OP posts:
Toddlerteaplease · 24/06/2023 19:19

I don't see why it should. Although written work is a major part of the job. Though many trusts are going online now. Nurses I've worked with who are dyslexic have had things put in place for them to help them.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/06/2023 19:20

Are you flexible and willing to work unsocial shifts as well. And take your turn at Christmas.

ThunderclapCloud · 24/06/2023 19:30

I'm an HCA working for a care company. My interview was a chat, more to get the feel of me as a person. Plenty of my colleagues are dyslexic. As long as you can write/type legible notes it's fine. They want people who are kind, get on well with people and willing to learn. There is a lot of mandated training (some online, some classroom based as well as on the job) In my company there is a lot of support. So I say, go and be yourself. Wishing you all the best (I love it!)

ThunderclapCloud · 24/06/2023 19:32

We do our notes on a phone app, which is what I meant by typing.

HollyFern1110 · 24/06/2023 19:38

A lot of places are so short of HCAs that anyone with two arms, two legs, no criminal convictions & a decent attitude will be just fine.

Try not to be too nervous. The probably need you as much as you need them.

TOWGA · 24/06/2023 21:09

Thank you all for your help

OP posts:
ThunderclapCloud · 26/06/2023 11:32

Best of luck! Is the post community based or at a residential site?
Let us know how you get on!

TOWGA · 26/06/2023 11:33

ThunderclapCloud · 27/06/2023 06:26

How did you get on? 🤞

TammyJones · 27/06/2023 06:41

Hope it went ok?

TOWGA · 27/06/2023 09:34

It went horrible, it kept glitching and I kept talking over them because of the delay! I will find out this afternoon but I don't hold much hope.

OP posts:
Toddlerteaplease · 27/06/2023 10:15

Was it online? Surely they'll make allowances for technical glitches. They really just want to see it you have the right attitude.
