DS and car sickness

pinesoutsidemywindow · 23/06/2023 12:19

DS is 15 and has suffered with car sickness since he has a toddler. It is better but he'll still vomit at least a couple of times on most journeys. We've tried most over the counter remedies, putting him in the front of the car, open windows, middle seat at the back and he still vomits.

He's due to go on a school trip to Italy and it's hours on a coach and he'll just vomit all over the place (not literally hopefully) and he's dreading it.

Has anyone got anything prescribed or used anything that actually works? I thought he'd have grown out of it but no such luch.

TY

Ask your doctor for buccastem tablets, they have helped me a lot with nausea. Hope this helps 😊

SeeingSpots · 23/06/2023 12:26

You say you've tried over the counter remedies but has he actually seen someone at the doctor's about his sickness who might be able to prescribe something stronger?

Stugeron. I wouldn't be without these, I take one 30 minutes before a journey.

Anti sickness bands for the wrist?
Boiled sweets. No looking down on phone!!

MinnieMountain · 23/06/2023 12:34

Phenergan tablets work for DS. Prescription only.

Definitely make an appointment, I appreciate it's difficult but if you've found nothing that works in over 15 years he likely needs something stronger, poor lad it must be horrible to be sick so often for so long.

AlrightJulia · 23/06/2023 12:38

I get severe motion sickness and the only thing that's works for me is the travel bands that go on the wrists. I can travel comfortably for hours wearing them. I have multiple pairs of the official sea band ones. I haven't tried the cheaper alternatives.

myfeatherboa · 23/06/2023 12:43

I can't understand how severe motion sickness can be cured with those bands. I am suffered my whole life with motion sickness. The only thing that works for me is one of the very drowsy motion sickness tablets you aren't supposed to give to kids, or a Valium, or a french brand of motion sickness I buy when we go to the alps.

MinnieMountain · 23/06/2023 12:55

@myfeatherboa phenergan is a drowsy one. They do a syrup for children.

SoupDragon · 23/06/2023 13:06

I think you should talk to your GP or a pharmacist. They might be able to recommend something better than the over the counter remedies. I know someone who used to have an injection of some kind.

Freshair87 · 23/06/2023 13:37

The anti sickness travel bands work well for my DD

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/06/2023 13:49

You can buy phenerghan over the counter.

AliceMcK · 23/06/2023 13:55

Definitely try the Dr, but also stock up on these sickness bag.

We are currently driving home from holiday and already had to use one today.

The solution is an iPad mounted on the back of the chair in front of him so he’s looking forward. I got the tip from someone who was on a 6 month road trip with a very car sick kid. Never got sick. Has worked for my son every time. Hasn’t needed meds since. Not ideal for a school trip I know but he can put in his headphones and watch a movie and just explain to his friends why he’s doing it.

Be careful with phenergan. It can make some people extremely drowsy. I still wasn’t right the next day. He’d need someone to look after him.

PinkFootstool · 23/06/2023 16:34

When you speak to the GP, ask about scopolamine patches. I have them for my migraine-related sickness but they are designed for travel sickness.

You put a small patch on the skin behind the ear a couple of hours before travel, and you can wear it for I think 72hrs, so ideal for a long journey like that. It's about the size of a 10p piece or smaller, and quite discreet.

Zippitydoodaa · 23/06/2023 18:06

I've suffered all my life with car sickness, but recently found Boots own make ' calm' travel tablets are good .
Bucastem tablets can be bought from the chemist , they're actually anti sickness tablets for migraines , but they have worked for me in the past.

pinesoutsidemywindow · 23/06/2023 21:06

Thank you for all the suggestions. The patches look hopeful. 🤞

I get terrible car sickness but Kwells work wonders for me. They make me very thirsty and tired but no nausea.

Changedmynameforthis55 · 23/06/2023 21:27

I worked with someone who was the same and what worked for him was sitting on a newspaper. Something to do with static or friction, he swore by it. Worth a go for the price of a newspaper

purplerabbit007 · 23/06/2023 21:51

The only thing that has worked for my daughter's travel sickness is phenergen taken the night before she travels. You can buy it over the counter and as you take it just before you go to sleep, drowsiness isn't an issue! She says that she doesn't even feel sick once she's taken them. They've revolutionised our travels!!!

Cyclistmumgrandma · 23/06/2023 21:57

I second Stugeron tablets. They work for me!

grunttheterrible · 23/06/2023 22:03

You can get buccastem over the counter. It's pricey as you can only get 6 and you'd have to visit a few to get enough- also read packaging as it's not a simple swallow

Mischance · 23/06/2023 22:05

Definitely no screens, even phones, when in the car. I cannot look at any screens - even the satnav - when in the car or I vomit.
