My own little bolt hole

RhubarbCrumbled · 22/06/2023 21:40

I'm seriously looking at buying a little caravan and putting it onto a campsite close by so I can have my own little bolt hole / haven away from everyone. Ive almost always lived alone or it's just been me and the boys. My OH moved in 2 years ago and almost immediately started working from home. I need a space of my own where nothing is moved or put away randomly or left in a mess or I'm talked to when I just want to sit in quiet!!!

I'm on the verge of buying one this weekend. Has anyone else done this or thought about it?!

That sounds amazing. I'd never considered this as not really a campervan sort of person. I'd love to put in a large summer house that would be big enough to sleep in (we have some land), but wouldn't be quite the same if everyone was right there annoying me when I wanted some peace!

I'm not sure what's up with all the naysayers here, sounds glorious OP, enjoy!

I can't wait now! My OH thinks I'm a bit weird anyway, but I think he's a bit weird with his obsessions so we work well together!

Another question that occurred to me OP🫣sorry.....
I don't have a tow bar and feel quite anxious about the thought of towing a caravan away from a dealership to the campsite I'd be storing on. Is there such a thing as a towing service to said campsite?

You could definitely call her "The retreat"

Sounds like bliss

I'm not sure about that. I've towed all sorts so aren't worried about that bit. Do you know anyone who could help you? I know some of the camping and caravan club sites offer a towing service but I think this is only locally.

Thanks OP and good luck x

Surely Ellis for a boy. Willow for a girl?

@FloydPepper
I couldn't disagree with you more in this particular scenario where the DP has recently moved into OP home and, it sounds like he has taken over /spread his stuff far and wide.

If it was a long established joint purchased home and DP was the father of OP's DC, then I would agree with you regarding the spending of "family money".

2years ago, and nowhere does the op say he’s spread far and wide (and it’s his home too)

I understand the want for a space that’s yours. Often blokes who have a study/den/man cave are derided for it and told it’s out of order.

I look forward to all the supportive posters from this thread joining in when there’s one where a bloke wants his own room/garage/shed/caravan!

We've had a chat about it and he knows that I need a space for myself. The room he now uses as an office was meant to be 'my room' - I still share it with him but it's not the same.
Family money wise, we have our incomes, we pay half the bills, some long term savings or agreed outgoings (like holidays, house maintenance) but the rest is our own.
He also has hobbies that take him away for whole weekends at a time. The boys stay with their Dad on alternate weekends and I definitely wouldn't be abandoning them! Or having an affair or hiding when I have to be at home. They would be coming with me when they're home, but it would be explicitly my space where no one else can have a say in decor leave their shtuff all over the place.

Ok fair enough. I’d say he can now make that room “his space”. It can be tough moving into someone’s house and feeling like it’s not yours.

I think it’s an odd solution to a problem, and I still 100% think you’re getting a very different response to a bloke doing the exact same, but that’s par for the mumsnet course.

each to their own. Enjoy your space

MuggleMe · 23/06/2023 11:47

I mean, you're often alone at the weekend so it's entirely up to you if you want to spend it at a caravan. Sounds lovely and the boys will enjoy it too.

Kitsmummy · 23/06/2023 11:50

I think it sounds amazing! Can we see a pic of said caravan?

amylou8 · 23/06/2023 11:51

Sounds lovely. What about a camper van? You found drive off wherever you fancy, and insurance and tax would probably be less than site fees.

ThisIsACoolUserName · 23/06/2023 11:54

Surely taking your 2 kids with you on alternate weekends would massively kill the vibe you're going for? (Sorry kids!)

rileynexttime · 23/06/2023 11:56

Absolutely go for it!
Any chance of the odd weekend letting to MN users ???

Brumbies · 23/06/2023 11:57

I've got one and it's been a life saver!

ReallyShouldBeDoingSomethingElse · 23/06/2023 11:58

I think it's a brilliant idea!

I know some people who use their allotment a bit like this.

grimmers44 · 23/06/2023 12:00

Blimey, why didn't I think of this 🤩

Gingerlygreen · 23/06/2023 12:02

We've got a touring caravan on a seasonal pitch and I love it, sometimes we go as a family but not always.
I went with my best friend last weekend and today I'm taking my daughter and her friend after school.

I also go on my own sometimes as does dh.

It's on a 12 month site so we get to use it all year round too which it's lovely, it's so cosy inside and I love waking up and looking across the frosty fields in winter.

There is often a waiting list for seasonal pitches so it's worth having your name put down, some sites do pitch and store which is what we did while we waited.
They'll keep your van there and then put it onto a pitch for when you arrive and then back into storage after you leave.
It's still really quick to set up, just plug in your electric and water and you're done.
The beauty of a seasonal is that you can leave your awning up which doubles your living space and so handy for muddy boots and outdoor chairs etc

I've had a campervan and it spent more time in the garage than on the road!!

@Gingerlygreen I've found a spot for the rest of this season but the ideal is a year round site. I'm so excited now!!

I'm excited for you, OP. That sounds brilliant and I'd love to hear how you get on 😀

Sounds like absolute heaven. It is your duty to be blissfully happy in your little space on behalf of all of us that crave it!

It's all a bit 'room of one's own'. A place that's just mine, I can have it how I like and there's no compromise.
I'm absolutely not being chased out of the house, I just dream of a quiet retreat that's just mine.

I would love this Op

ohsuzannah · 23/06/2023 12:24

Go for it! My little caravan was in our driveway and I loved going there with a coffee, just to sit and read a book 😌
