What's an appropriate gift to take when staying at a friend's house?

We are going to stay with some friends of ours for the weekend. We have known them professionally for 5-6 years, but only in the last year did we become friendly outside of work.

They are very generous and always insist on paying for food or supplying us with wine when we visit. We haven't been to this house before as it's in the countryside.

What is considered too little or too much to take?
So far we are going to: bake something to take, a £20 bottle of plonk, £50 box of chocolates. I think that's enough, but DH wants to take another £40 bottle of wine.

And I’m sure the people you are visiting would not want you to spend £100 on them.

A friend sells boxes containing a selection of different, lovely, little cakes and slices. These go down a treat!

" No matter how wealthy or the fact they invited, it’s important to not look like you’re there for a free feed."

Also important to not look like you're paying for your stay....

I mean she’s hardly doing that at a hundred quid. Did you not see the financial bracket she mentioned.

Sure, they likely expect nothing, but I’m also fairly sure they will spend a lot more than that on the op and her partner. A weekend, drinks, dinners, lunch , breakfast etc.

I would take some wine, two medium price bottles , unless you really do know wines most people can’t tell the difference and what is more don’t care as long as it’s palatable , a big bunch of sunflowers because they are so lovely , and a couple of cases of beer, it’s hot, there are lots of sporting things on the telly, and wine isn’t always what you want to be drinking.

@Bambooflowers "Sure, they likely expect nothing, but I’m also fairly sure they will spend a lot more than that on the op and her partner. A weekend, drinks, dinners, lunch , breakfast etc."

But that's not the point. It's a little present to say "thank you for a lovely weekend." It's doesn't depend on what the hosts spent. It's not a transaction!

I don’t think it’s a completion. Ultimately, it’s up to the OP what she wants to spend. Usually you just get something small to show your appreciation. Doesn’t need to be much.

I certainly wouldn’t expect my house guests to buy me anything at £100 - a potted plant and I’d be as happy as Larry!

A £50 box of chocolates? Why? They'd be wasted on me. I'd rather have two bottles of cheaper wine that I liked. Unless these chocs are your friends' favourites, then don't buy them. I can't imagine spending that much on chocs!!! 😱

Yep!

Honeslty a box of chocolates at like £10 would suffice in my opinion

Well, in my case the sunflowers someone mentioned would be perfect. My heart sinks at the sight of a potted plant. As my son said once about the gift of a plant "Who gives you responsibility for your birthday!"
