My daughter who is 8 in 6 weeks has read through all of the Jacqueline Wilson books which are age appropriate (not many, haha!) and has read through the Roald Dahl collection. Needing some new recommendations to keep her going please!

The Wild Magic trilogy by Celine Kiernan.

I love it because the parents aren't conveniently disposed of. They are away due to good plotting at times, but are there and supportive at other times.

Begone the Raggedy Witches by Celine Kiernan | Goodreads

that is the first one (she has other books for older YA which i also love)

Some of the Jean Ure books are similar to Jacqueline Wilson.
Like JW she writes for different age groups so best to check before hand.
My all time favourites are the Ramona Quimby books by Beverly Cleary.

I have an 8 year old - DS though.....

We enjoy the Holly Webb books, animal ark, the Chris Hoy cycling ones, squirrel boy Vs series by Dave Lowe, dick king smith and the football ones by Frank lampard.

washrinse · 23/06/2023 13:04

Definitely the Ramona books. I read them to DD and we both had a bit of a cry when we finished the last one 😂
Other series she has enjoyed - Malory Towers (they are outdated but still good fun), How to Train Your Dragon, Wizards of Once. I’m going to pick up some Judy Blumes for her for the summer holidays. Your DD might enjoy some
of the ones aimed at younger readers eg Fudge

I second Peanut Jones - we're on the second book and loving it!

We've also recently read 'There's a Wizard In My Shed' by Simon Farnaby - also very good.

Couldn't get on with most of David Walliams books - our daughter lost interest quickly... The only one she liked was The Midnight Gang.

I'd never heard of Peanut Jones before. They look good.

We are reading Cinders and Sparks by Lindsey Kelk and Mummy Fairy and Me by Sophie Kinsella.

my 8yo has dyslexia so she’s absolutely loving these.

Harry Potter & Warrior Cats were popular with my 8yr old.

Ivy and Bean. Lovely books. The lady in the bookshop local to my Mum recommended them when she was looking for books for eight year old girls and they're just delightful.

My kids loved the mr lemoncellos series by Chris grabenstein

Cathpot · 26/09/2023 21:15

Chris riddell Ottoline series? I remember DD loving them but can’t exactly remember her age. Maybe be a bit young? The hardbacks with the shiny edged pages are beautiful as well.

DanceToTheMusicInMyHead · 26/09/2023 21:15

Murder Most Unladylike by Robin Stevens. My 8 year old loves the whole series

CoodleMoodle · 26/09/2023 21:18

Famous Five, Secret Seven and Five Find Outers have gone down well with DD(9.5) over the last couple of years. We've just started a series called Adventure Island by Helen Moss which is supposed to be very similar but a bit more modern, the first one is The Mystery of The Whistling Caves. It's good so far!

Most recently we read a trilogy called The Impossible Postal Express by PG Bell which she enjoyed, before that it was The Borrowers. Pamela Butchhart's books have been enjoyed too, particularly the Izzy series. We also read all of HP - we were going to save the last couple until she was a bit older but she couldn't wait!

DD reads lots by herself too, she especially loves anything by Jeremy Strong (My Brother's Famous Bottom series being her favourite). They're probably a bit easy for her now but she laughs herself silly Grin She's just started reading a series by Mark Lowery (The Jam Doughnut That Ruined My Life is the first) and I heard her giggling away to herself in bed, so I think that's a hit too!
